  • He'd be just fine with a garbage can lid for a ride cymbal. This is reediculous drumkit playing. Nobody else can do this. He don't just play it -- he BENDs it.

It's silly when guys are compared to him that are machines. He is not a machine, which is the whole point.

  • siickkkkkk

  • Its funny how I think when watching his videos that I could play like that, and then when I record myself....I call my friend if he wants to grab a beer

  • his ride is sounds shit not gonna lie

  • @MrXyz1549

Why does just about every great drummer video on Youtube have to have to be accompanied by some snide comment about how one of their cymbals sounds bad? Gadd is one of the greatest musicians to ever play the instrument. You should be thanking God for the privilege of even being able to watch him play. Furthermore, the cymbal in this video is in all likelihood the his famous 18" Zildian K, a cymbal he used for years and in hundreds (thousands?) of recording sessions.

  • @toughlikerocks

Sorry to upset you... I just don't like the sound of his ride...

btw what other drummers ides sound bad? I love steve gadd don't get me wrong. i just find that in this particular video his ride sounds some what bad (imo) anyways have yourself a wonderful day kind sir :)

  • A nice way to wake up your senses in the Morning :) and your neighbours too ...

  • what recording is this from??!

  • Best all around drummer who ever lived. Just my opinion...

  • looks like technical but it is purely feel.. that's what i like about Steve Gadd

  • Its not his best but its insane how technical he is!

  • GADD dit it!

  • @everyoneisjosh- yes he does tune differently but studio gigs require that muffling without having five digi processors and hours of additional engineering. These are the days of the one or two takes and GI home!

  • GADD bless you!

  • I believe in Gadd.

  • who are the 13 dislike dickheads?

  • @jvz1970 travis barker fans

  • best drummer ever ;)

  • i've made several attempts to get into this fellas drumming over the last like, ten years- and this is the first one of his videos that's vaguely interested me. i really have tried to get into him. i swear :(

  • @stylerprofyler your like...unbelievably naive! He has forgotten more than you'll ever know! Gadd is God!

  • @ponderingwanderer That heavily-muffled sound was in vogue at the time this was recorded. If you listen to Gadd today he tunes his drums much differently, with thin, coated heads and less--or no--muffling.

  • Steve Gadd > Reality

  • Take 2 lol. Whats that dude bitching about?

  • @Bobbyeagle steve screwed up the ending. you wouldn't know it though if he didn't point it out.

  • @Bobbyeagle

    And 3, 4 , 5,

    Gadd is that addictive

  • Steve Gadd is the Chuck Norris of drummers.

  • @drumsbykevin Steve Gadd never breaks sticks, they're terrified of what will happen if they let him down.

  • oh boy I love this guy if I could play like him I'd surely be on heaven's house band.

  • i really dig steves groove, but honestly, the drums are too muffled for my tastes. i know it's great for studio recording to have them dampened like that, but i like to hear the drums sing!!

  • i really dig steves groove, but honestly, his drums are a little to muffled for my tastes. i know it's great for studio recording, but i like to hear the drums sing!

  • steve god....

  • how the hell do 13 people dislike this!!!

  • this is a great performance .... fucking incredible

  • he can play anything as good as anyone hahaha

  • "COOL JAZZ MUSIC"

    *MIKE SPENCE.

  • JAZZMASTER! OF! JAZZ MUSIC!

    *MIKE SPENCE.

  • legit

  • Uhm, can anybody transribe those fills from 0:53 onwards, please? :newby drummer:

  • @Gassalasca2 Its just his trademark Ratamaque fill first then some triplets between toms/bass drum. You can easily find all that stuff on YouTube somewhere. I had to work this stuff out by ear, we didn't have the internet back in the 80s!!! My sure you use your ears, you'll become a better musician and you'll get some surprises on the way!

  • How in the name of Gadd people dislike this Video ?

    :)

  • Ufff this guy is fantastic!!!!!

  • lol how can you dislike this?

  • @musikaddik You, sir, are a poopy head.

  • Steve kills it with the groove every time .That's it.

  • if you compare steve gadd with dave lombardo,,gadd is good in differnt ways,he is very fast with his left hand,,make rolls they come fast out of nothing,,dave lombardo,

is fast with both hands,,and he is great in every situation,,i guess i prevere dave lombardo

  • @klajess how the heck can u even compare that beast with Steve Gadd.

Gadd is way out of his league and 20 times more musical.

  • @klajess how can u even compare this beast with Gadd,

Steve Gadd is 20 times better in many other ways, its not about the lame technics

  • @klajess i was just wondering why i had never heard of dave lombardo, so i looked him up. now i know why i have never heard of him.

  • not very good is he!

  • this guy is possessed i think:

  • @alfreko24 very good. Ha ha!

  • For someone who's totally uninterested in Steve Gadd, rrdrums110 sure posts on his videos a lot. I think he's a closet Gadd enthusiast.

  • He loves Tony Williams for some reason too...

  • @spibbly i think he's a closet douchebag.

  • @samm1809

I'm not sure about that. He seems pretty open about it!

  • @spibbly that's like being a closet heterosexual..........

  • @spibbly rrdrums110 posts on just about every famous drummers video... from neil, to steve, mike, Gavin... ect... just a troll...

  • you clearly know nothing about gadd and the impact he has had on drummmers all over the world

  • Can you say Tony Williams and even want this?

  • @rrdrums110 Can you say " if you don't like it then dont check it???"

  • Eyewateringly good.

  • guy - "do it one more time man, please! we got to do it right"

gadd - "was that the ending?"

    other guy - "yeah!"

    gadd - "hahah!"

    :)

  • Can anyone tell what the guy at the end of the video says?

  • Zikes! Gaddzukes! It must be fun to play at that level. What an inspiration. I found another video with the title 'rrdrums110 tells it like it is'. Don't even watch the video - just listen to the audio. WIthin one minute all of these negative posts will become irrelevant. Cheers!

  • @rrdrums110 Go and listen to Chick Coreas Albums: The Leprechaun, and The Mad Hatter right now! Its on AzureBlooNotes channel if you don't have it or can't find it.

  • What on earth is he wearing?

  • DrumTchr ..there are some words that many people should listen. I couldn't say it better.

Personaly, i love many drummers, in diferent ways, with everyone at his place because no one has all the knowledge to play everything.

  • if you just pay this rrdrums guy no attention then he'll stop posting if he does then he really is a no life dickhead

    p.s gadd is great

  • We wouldn't keep slumming down here?

Theres a jackass comment on every fucking Steve Gadd video on youtube from you.

  • @rrdrums110 "Steve Gadd is to drumming as Pablo Picasso is to painting: modern yet elemental, groundbreaking but earthy, simple yet complex...and an important/ever-present part of our cultural panorama. I salute and thank the man whose timekeeping has become the language of our time." Peter Erskine

  • @mgmusic1 Oh come on Peter. You smoke this overated asspaper but I guess you don';t know it.

  • All the great drummers have something special and unique. Each of these drummers have fan's that are VERY territorial. Those fan's will argue with their dying breath that their favorite drummer is the best. My question is, "The best at WHAT"? No drummer has ever demonstrated playing every possible style and every fill in, lick and solo better than every other drummer. That would not be possible. In just about every musical style there are drummers that have fans that say they are THE BEST.

  • A few drummers names who have fans that say they are the best are; Krupa, Rich, Bellson, Morello, Elvin, Gadd, Tony Williams, Donati, Weckl, Vinnie, Chambers, Peart,...and the list goes on and on. All of these drummers (with the exception of Buddy) are and were pretty humble about their abilities KNOWING that we are all students of the craft forever. There ain't no best nothing. (with the exception of Buddy Rich and Zakir Hussain) LMAO

  • i suggest that in order to shut this rrdrums110 ass wipe everyone should just ignore him

  • That was classic.. Actually seeing Steve Gadd sweating trying to get that montuno together...lol One of my all time favorite drummers.. almost feels wierd to know that he's human.. gotta love those kinds of moments in the studio tho.. ;)

  • somebody should put a spamfilter on that rrdrums110 guy, he's taking up too much space on youtube. He's like that boring guy in your social group who always tags along but never contributes.

  • this guy is pure and musical.

  • shut up

  • hey everybody. if you guys want to hear rrdurms110's amazing drums skills and how he s so much mor eentertaining than steve gadd, check out the video "rrdrums110 tells it like it is."

  • Don't fucking badmouth Steve Gadd.

If you can play it, well done but if you don't think this guy is that great compared to you, WHY WATCH THE FUCKING VIDEO?!?!?!

Leave him alone, he's done very well for himself, don't like it? Fuck off

  • yeah u dnt get what i mean

hes playing 4 different rhythms u wankernancy

  • 4 grooves at a time? bad?

Grow the fuck up and realize what it is to be a good drummer u fuckin loser

  • im not sure if your saying this because your just fucking retarded, ot you just like to make a scene, but seriously, if you know anything about percussion, or music in general, you would apreciate this guys skill. not all music is headbanging rock and roll with smoke and lights, open your eyes man. i really pity the fool who can look at pure talent straight in the eyes, and complain about how boring it is. seriously man, i feel for you, God doesnt make us all competent i guess. . .

  • @_@

  • Groooovie

  • Siiiiiick groove! Sick!

  • hay u stupid fag. learn some about drums before your empty head blow up

  • Every single drum set drummer plays four rythms at the same time. the best example howerever is virgil Donati.

  • Gadd can play the most styles but he is a jazz musician. if he want to play like death metal he would blow u of the chair.

  • Actually, I think Gadd's main thing is Funk.

  • I think u should learn a little bit more about drums little man. name 1 more drummer then gadd who can play 4 rythms at the same time?

  • Tommy Lee has influenced me do drink Jagermeister... not a big fan of his drumming though...

  • @LDrum83 if thats all hes inspired you to do then you are reading the wrong message. you need to atleast to lots of blow and fuck porn stars aswell! lol :P

  • The end is so funny... seeing the almighty Gadd screw up and laugh at himself... a great, humble guy.

  • Yhheeeeaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

  • wish i had an extra brain

  • decent dialogue at the end

  • To się nazywa wirtuozeria!

  • nice

  • Very tough, try to play it.

  • WHERE ARE MY SHOES?!

  • The master at work!

  • Gadd always blows me away with his MELODIC grooviness!

    Love it!

  • this is no metal! ah jk i love this too

  • That was awesome. I wish he kept the whole solo thing instead of going into a straight beat from 1:27-on...

  • dang man check out them throwback K hi hats..haha

  • He really knows what really matters in music. Minimalist but to the point. similar to the Jazz guitar legend Jim Hall, very musical. I think what made him so successful (the most recorded drummer) is not really his technique, which he has ample amount, but has to do with his almost mysterious ways he plays with time. I know young drummers listening to guys like Joey jordison, would find Gadd to be lame., but if you asked Joey about Gadd, I am quite sure he would have good things to say about G

  • im young and i dont listen to joey much for drumming inspiration, perse, but i love steve gadd and vinnie colaiuta and dave weckl- my top 3!- and i hope it sets me in the right direction cause i wanna go pro......other than that that is one dry ass ride and my compliments to the chef cause this is delicious!!!!!!!

  • i'm 15 and couldn't agree more. Gadd in fact has to be able to understand the value and form of time in a totally different way than the average human does. He plays around it, goes ahead of it, comes back, slows down, catches up, its just awesome how he plays with the mind and the time feeling of the listener to put his wonderful grooves and complex patterns across. Maybe the world will not see a genius like Gadd again in a long time.

  • Taikoking was right on the money. It's good that young drummers will look back and say, "wow, Gadd has great pocket", or "gee, Vinnie really has got feel" and begin to understand the emotions of these drummers instead of just caring about speed and complexity.

  • Gadd always seems to play just what the music needs. I saw him live with Richard Tee and also with Paul Simon and most of the time he played solid grooves that perfectly complemented the other players. There are many great drummers but Gadd's a musician.

  • Just came from another thread where rrdrums was trashing Gadd. How lame. All I can say is that Mr. "I'm 57 and I know better than the rest of you and Buddy Rich's way is the only way" sounds like a guy who doesn't groove at all. Plenty of top musicians who DO groove think very highly of Gadd, as has been quoted in this thread already. Also, many people have been flying Gadd all over the world for years so he could be a part of their music. Their opinions carry a lot more weght with me...

  • Vicegrip when you hit bottom you know what to do. To all of you..you'll miss me when I'm gone. But cut me loose. i don't want to argue w/you any longer. Be all you can be happy trails sayonnarra and shalom. I just don't care about this enough. You've got your o's and me mine. they aren't going to meet. But Jikulu.. one last thing. About teddy all he is is a caveman bashing w/two big sticks. No bounce no left hand leads no nothing special except a big brittany paycheck Loser drummer. Don't respon

  • rrdrums110 needs to open up his heart and mind so he can appreciate life and art a little more subjectively.

  • ohh and if you believe "The world is coming apart" then dont you have something better to do with your life then to go on sites and talk trash.....

  • rrdrums110, "blind loyalty"? well i guess Gadd has the whole world fooled (including the greatest drummers in the world) but, i guess youre the only one not falling for Gadd's "Jedi's mind trick".

As i stated before Gadd accomplished more by the time he was 11 yrs of age then you have in your whole pathetic 57 yrs.....

You know, im starting to think that your just a....... jealous........... lazy...............BUM.

ohh and please post something of you playing some Gadd, if not then STFU

  • Jikulu.. You dare to put a matched death grip non technique club man like Teddy campbell in the same sentence w/weckl and Joe morello? You are a meandering don't know what i wanna be am i straight or gay type of drummer. Pity you fool. Well that's about it. I will say this.. I never knew how much blind loyalty w/no rationale explanation for something of such questionable value. I don't see any point in carrying on w/you sheep any longer. The world is coming apart or don't you read?Only Md?

  • Well looks like idiocy knows no bounds. I never said Gadd influenced ALL the drummers I listed, I said SOME. 57 yrs old and you cant read properly. And whats wrong with putting Teddy Campbell as part of my influences alongside Weckl, Morello and others? Just becos Teddy doesnt play trad grip?? That has to be the most ridiculous reason ever. And to suggest that Buddy was being sarcastic in his praise of Gadd is just laughable. Oh but I forgot. You cant read properly. What a sad life u lead

  • Vicegrip here is a fact for you...You are probably an alchoholic w/the name you have chosen for yourself is probably a revelation of your own reality. it takes one to know one. I suggest you get to AA while you still are alive or not in prison or on the streets. That is from my heart to you. But Buddy rich is my favorite drummer the absolute pinnacle. In fact i don't know why anybody wants to play drums any other way. I know some of the things he has said about drummers. mostly he thinks trash

  • Budd y said that Gadd was the point man for Modern drumming. That was a buddy Rich sarcastic put down that i do agree with. he's the reason you young guys love Gadd but he's the reason jazz is diluted into loungy samba rumba straight funky 4/4 mostly junk. Ala weckl that's my biggest complaint about his greatness. too much Ricky Ricardo from gadd's bag of b/s. Btw Jikulu Joe morello didn't ever never ever need Steve Gadd to be 10X the drummer gadd wasn't dig? You're 25 know nada,Can't play either

  • rrdrums110 here are some more quotes from famous drummers/musicians about Gadd. My point for posting these is to prove a point, the point being that you have NO F***ING idea what constitutes a good drummer. I think the most important quote is from Buddy b/c Buddy was not one to compliment drummers too often (he told it the way it was) And btw i believe Buddy Rich was the most influential on the drumming community followed by Gadd (2 totally different styles)

  • rrdrums110 remember "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts".

  • Buddy Rich

I love drummers, but it disappoints me because they have not elevated the art of drumming. They've set it back quite a few years.

I think the only guy who made a dent in the change-over, if you want to call it that, was Gadd.

"I was stunned. No one had ever done anything like that before. I couldn't believe it."

Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, after Steve Gadd had sightread the entire chart to "Aja" flawlessly

  • Peter Erskine;

"I can't think of another percussionist today who has inspired more drummers than Steve Gadd. His level of innovation, sheer technical mastery of the instrument, and dedication to the groove in every style of music he plays has delighted and instructed countless drummers in how good drumming can be. I'm grateful for every paradiddle, single and double stroke the man has ever played."

  • Vinnie Colaiuta;

" I couldn't believe it from the first time I heard Steve. Not only does he do what he does with technical brilliance, but he basically put the word "music" right in the forefront of the drums. His influence on me was tremendous, as well as his influence on the entire drumming and musical world!"

  • Dennis Chambers

"Steve is one of the greatest drummers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. He caused me many a nights' headaches trying to figure out his rhythms, but I enjoyed doing it."

    Kenny Aronoff;

"Steve Gadd is one of the greatest and most influential drummers/musicians ever! His feel, ideas and talent with music and drumming are at the highest level possible. It's an honor to know him."

  • Carter Beauford;

"I got my first Yamaha kit in 1978 because my hero, Steve Gadd, used them. I still play a black Recording Custom kit beacuse of him."

    Steve Smith;

"His pocket is the deepest, his time is flawless and his ideas innovative. In fact, I get asked all the time about a certain fill I played in the Journey tune "Separate Ways", my answer: it's a Gadd lick, and I stole it! thank you Steve for all the incredible music"

  • Andy Newmark (former drummer of John Lennon, David Bowie, Keith Richards, Sly & the Family Stone, Roxy Music and many others.) ;

"Steve is an institution. When you see him play he makes it all make sense. The reason it always works is because Steve is playing Steve. He's probably the first guy to understand and have a genuine feel for rock and pop-and have the technical facility and feel of a jazz drummer as well. He's an original, poetry in motion"

  • Louie Bellson;

"Steve Gadd represents one of the most complete players in the world. He has it all, technique, groove, you name it. I've been a big fan of his for many years."

    Chick Corea

"Every drummer wants to play like Gadd because he plays perfect... He has brought orchestral and compositional thinking to the drum kit while at the same time having a great imagination and a great ability to swing."
