Lou Holtz was the man....I use to love to listen to his pregame talk....it was always like...."i dont know if we are good enough...or i hope we can compete with them"..he was like the devils advocate...classic. Then they would go out and win by 20...it was great.

This was the last great ND offensive line. Back then everyone knew ND was going to run and still nobody could stop them. In fact during most of Holtz's tenure ND had great running teams.

Lots of Money... NBC TV contract mostly, but when they go to a bowl game the don't have to split money with a conference either. Of course they don't get any from other conference teams either, but that hasn't hurt them... The NBC contract has more than made up for that...

Notre Dame is unique because they are able to get to a bowl often enough that they reap the reward of not having to share any money. I'd like to see a system where there are no independents, and all tema are forced to join a conference. If that can happen and ND can still keep their NBC contract... ND would be in good shape by joining the Big ten or Big East... All conferences should have a championship game as well... the good SEC teams and Big 12 teams play that 13th game, that decides things

Since 1989, Notre Dame hasn't been what Notre Dame has been built up at. From 1989-1993 ND had its best teams during the stretch, but from 1994 to present ND has been ass...The ONLY bowl win was to Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl? ND just needs to beat USC first before talking National Championship contention because if they can beat USC they are as good as any team in the country

Also, bama was 0-8 in bowls during their GOLDEN ERA with Bear Bryant... I guess that made those teams irrelevent also.... lol

three top ten finishes in the last 20 years?? certainly not ELITE... but easily relevant... and who cares about conference titles when we have more NATIONAL titles than anyone else... besides this is the worst ear in school history and we still have a .600 winning percentage... that's about right for USC, Bama, Florida, ND, Nebraska and other "top programs" who have also had their down years... anyway, enjoy the down time while it lasts because it never does and won't for ND either

Notre Dame hasn't been a relevant football program for 20 years. They are 1-9 in their last 10 bowl games and cannot claim any conference championships because they are an indepedent.
