Just a heads up. I had my first flight on this plane today. Stock setup except I'm using a 3300mah 4s battery. It is WAY TO TAIL HEAVY on the stock CG. Please if you get this plane, don't listen to Tony. The CG should be at 80-85mm not 90-95mm like the manual says. I was very lucky to get it down in one piece. Minor damage to the right wing, and that's it. But I'm putting the battery all the way to the nose next flight for sure.
@7jsm7 Battery all the way to the nose, it was still tail heavy. Not too bad, flyable, but still tail heavy. I added 2 AA batteries to the front for weight. One on each side of the motor, just cut some foam and press fit them in there. Flew like a charm. I highly recommend this plane, it is very stable. I haven't been able to stall it yet. I tried believe me I really tried. It wouldn't tip or anything, just looks like it's coming in for a landing do give it power to land though, it'll be softer.
Superb video review! It's great to see a young kid do such a professional job. You know your shit, and I appreciate that. Looking forward to all your vids. Man, I gotta get some sleep!
Hey Tony, enjoyed your reviews n got myself the 1400mm P47. Where I fly there is no landing area, just a wide open field. So I hand tossed my planes and belly land each time (yea I know its a bloody waste of the retracts). For the P47 would u recommend I change the 3 bladed prop to a 2 bladed one for belly landings in order to not break the prop? If should I go to a 12 x 8 as recommended by some pilots at my field? Thanks in advance.
On the airfield planes they are top flyers, The planes fly very well but airfield is not setting the angle of the motor to get the best flight performance. Folks are getting the CG wright but the tail has a lag and floaty feel, so they add weight to the nose, this is not a weight issue. Put 3 { #4s flat washers item #491431 } found at lowes hardware store, on the top right corner behind the motor mount "front view" this lowers the motor down and to the left "pilot view" aerobatics are gr8
About how much extra weight do you think this plane could lift? I had a idea that I could replace the drop tank on the fuselage and drop a "toypedo" (Yes, i spelled it correctly, that is the name of a toy). A toypedo is a pool toy that you can throw pretty far through water because of its shape. It ways about a pound or two, so I was wondering if the plane could lift it. I'm okay to upgrade the motor and battery once I get the plane. I'm not quite at that skill level yet.
Your cool. I love these things. I'm 59 yo w m who wants to buy an air force of
AirField WWII 5-6 ch warbirds like the Spitfire, then FW-190, BF-109, P-40, P-47, P-51, a Stuka, a P-38, , F-4F,F-6F, F-4U Corsair. And your videos are most helpful and smart to provide
Great review, hit all the things I needed to know before I order one such as flyability, stability in the air, CG, landing characteristics, capability of the RTF standard equipment, the need (or lack thereof) for upgraded items, etc. However, the wing mount drop tanks are NOT "bombs" as mentioned in the video, but good feedback about their magnetic mount. Sure wish this P-47 had the actual 4-bladed paddleblade propeller instead of the 3-blade.
I really like the way you give a full rundown on how the plane performs especially for landings and the response during rolls and pitch and whether expo is needed etc. It gives the beginners an idea of which warbird would be a suitable step up. I know you sometimes give comparisons between the models along the same line up but if you could do that more, that would be great too.
Tony, if you were to commit, which of the 1400mm planes would you start with, and do you have a preference of retracts or no retracts, and why? I'm definitely going for the F4U, so don't mention that one.
@Prttimeninja2 yes the P-47 is a very beautiful plane. The reason why the retracts do not go fully up is that if for any reason something gets inside the landing gear area the retracts do not break/ over load from trying to close. But I agree it would be a lot better if they close all the way
@jamiekenta Yes extra batteries are available. You can probably fit a battery as big as 4000mah but the battery compartment will need to be trimmed to fit the larger battery. But currently the battery compartment fits the stock 4s 2200mah just perfect so a larger battery will not fit with out trimming the foam area.
I noticed @ 8:20 when you shake the wing it is not tight in there. The wing moved back & forth. I really like this plane but DO NOT trust the wing set up over time. What will they be like after 50 flights?
@UtRadioGuy Yes the wing was not mounted on tight. I over looked the manual and realized that there are set screw on the bottom of the wing to lock them in place. But I didn't know till after the video was shot so i couldn't mention it.
@optimistONE I like both planes, but to be honest the P-47 looks much better. I love the P-51, but for some reason the P-47 flies better. Maybe it's just the looks of the P-47 tricking my head lol
What about flaps is cutting necessary or is it prehinged? Should show us the steps involved with it as well or a PDF of the manual on the site for potential buyers to look at the steps involved for building. Just a suggestion.
@unclefester420 Yes to use the flaps you need to cut the sides and hinge the flaps. It is only held on by the thin foam so you might want to use some hinge tape to prevent the flaps from break off over time. Thanks for the suggestion I will keep it in mind for the future videos.
@anderman72 for the Kit version yes it does, but for the RTF the factory used a little bit of glue to hold the cowling in place. A little pulling and the cowl should come right out.
They looked so smooth acting in the air. Really great planes. What did you think about the retracts Tony. Will they rip out of the foam if you have a hard landing or are they mounted well?
@ArcticRc The retracts are mounted on pretty good. There's a top plate on top of the wings that the bottom retracts hold on to so it's a pretty secure hold. But I guess with any super hard landings the gears can rip out.
Newsflash there is a SET SCREW in each wing that secures the wing to the spar. Do NOT attempt to fly these models without first securing this jamb screw.
@nitroplanes Your very welcome. Glad I could help out. Oh and if you really want to thank me, you could always send me a coupon code for my next Nitroplanes purchase! =)
@johng321ify No not really. Since this is a warbird and a low wing plane it would not be an easy plane to learn on. A beginner will have a much better time on a trainer plane such as a high wing plane.
yea the p47 ran with a 4 bladed prop system not 3
