But the Scots know all about wars:the MacGregors versus the Campbells etc. But think of all the forgotten wars, Korea, Malaya where we were - anyone know why? And Cyprus where my wife's first husband was mined, and another relative shot in the back by the IRA - he was only a bus driver.....And Jerusalem where the Jews murdered British soldiers. And so it rolls on.......
This is one of Eric Bogle's fine old songs. He calls it "No Man's Land" and he has written a sequel some 30+ years later called "Hallowed Ground". While many know him for this song and "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", he actually has a vast body of work. His mid-career "Best of" collection is 5 CD's long - pretty much all outstanding. There are many of his songs on YouTube - look a bit - enjoy!
The War to end Wars? since the beginning of The War to end Wars there has only been one calendar year when no British soldier died on active service!! Its time the common man - in a peaceful lawful non confrontational way- made the Idiots in power to bring our young people home and looked after 'oor ain folk' first and foremost
I Love this song and have never heard it sung better. It brought tears to my eyes at many a Corries show.It portrays perfectly the utter folly of war and the selfishness/madness of those in power! I,d like to end with a quote from the TV series Blackadder Goes Forth. When explaining the reason for the failure of a unilateral plan to avoid war by forming two massive armies he states"It was BOLLOCKS"!! Never was a truer word said!!
This song makes me so fuckin angry at our countries leaders. They were happy to send men to their deaths pointlessly during WW1, and told them that `the war would end wars` (earl Haig, rot in hell). Now, they fight in Iraq, Afghanistan and it looks like they want to fight with Iran. Tony Blair claimed that this was one of his favourite songs ever, then sent the troops to Iraq, to fight the latest `oil war`.
I have listened to four or more versions of this song today - it still raises hair on the back of my neck every time I hear it, I think of my Grandfather who lost a lung when gassed in the trenches in WW1. And today at 11am on 11/11/11 I stopped and thought of him and countless others killed and injured in that and so many other wars
I will remember the sacrifice that lads just a few years older than me had to pay at that time and it sickens me that kids my age now don't care about it R.I.P over a needless war
It is astounding the amount of soldiers who suffered such painful hell from others greed. It was shocking the amount of soldiers who sacrificed their tomorrows for our today's. I will never forget the experience I had honouring the soldiers of WW1 on the western front.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I spent 5 days going round all the battlefields, trenches, shell holes, pill boxes, memorials and Cemeteries which has gave me a whole different perspective on WW1. We left the Menin gate crying and listened to this song and it now means so much to me and I can't hear it without it bringing a tear to my eye.
@macleodcalum69 Gee, I wonder why this song (and so many others) are not played on "Veteran's Day"-by the way, a very different concept from "Remembrance Day" or "Armistance Day"--

@hawickman If you'd read Major General Smedley Butler's "War is a Racket" before hand, do you think you would still have signed up? It was about the then new American Empire. But it could just as well have been about the British Empire or the Roman Empire or the Inca Empire or any other damn empire in history.
It's "Memorial Day" weekend in the U.S. I hope everyone enjoys their barbecues and furniture sales.
On one level one might say that those who died did so to protect our freedoms and our "pursuit of happiness", but it would be nice at least to pay them a good thought.
@blackshaw69uk Instead of listening to sad music and complaining about the state of the world, get up and do something about it. At the very least, you yourself can live in harmony with the people around you. Call it 'setting an example', or 'choosing a non-violent lifestyle', but realize that there are places in the world where people don't have the luxury of saying no. Violence exists because long ago we learned that it gives us the power to get what we want, it will never entirely leave us.
@Matrfig42 Tell that to all the sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters and other close family that lost family fighting for your liberty and freedom.
@blackshaw69uk My dad was in WWII, Korea, and 2 peace keeping tours. He lost 2 great uncles in the Boer War and one in WWI. He signed up to see the world, and when he came back couldn't find a job on civvie street. All that talk of high ideals is bull.
If only the poiticians and dictators of the world could understand the mesage here. But to these murderers greed will always be all. My heart bleeds for all the needless deaths caused by ther greed and ambition of those who had power
Read some of the ill conceived comments, my god you have to turn everything into politics. Just listen to the words and think because theres no need for comments unless its for respect. Finally this is the best version of the song sang with passion and meaning god bless the corries.
All you users arguing over who's economy spent the most should wind yer neck in. This is about a great song sung by a great band written by a great folk singer (Eric Bogle) about the horrors of war and a tribute to the people who lost their life's in all conflicts. LEAST WE FORGET. Amen.
Written by Eric Bogle, a Scottish folk singer who emigrated to Australia in 1969 and then returned. He's fantastic live, if you ever get the chance, and his version (which he originally called "No Man's Land") is still the best. Nevertheless, this is still a wonderful and haunting rendition.
I have a son on law in Iraq, a grandson in West Point, a brother in law destroyed mentally in Vietnam, a father never the same after WW11 , two uncles dead in same and 4 great uncles killed in WW1. Are we free? I think not.. We are still forced into wars that we do not want and have no control over. Can't we try another way, As John Lennon sings "imagine all the people living life as one.' My family for one has done enough . I wish it would all stop!
On behalf of my children, I thank all the men and women who stood against the authoratarian fascist regimes of Portugal, Spain, Ireland, Vichy France, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Japan. I weap for the ~50 million who died. Please do not romanticse murder, any nationality can give an excuse, the ones before knew what were they doing and should hold the shame for humanity's worst crime. For my own clan members, I remeber your sacrifice.
America is a disgusting excuse for a country. They quantify lives and will accept any excuse to do what they want. They may have invented the internet and other things, but that is simply because rather then assisting in the great wars they spent years profiting from it from both sides, putting them in a far superior economic position to carry them into the latter half of the 20th century while every other economy was crippled through their heroic efforts.
@captainhunter123 I guess we should have sacrificed MORE of our blood and treasure in YOUR WARS!!! Yeah we're the disgusting country. WWI and WWII were YOUR WARS. Vietnam was passed to the US by the French. The US protected Western Europe for 70 years from Soviet threats of driving tank armies to the Channel. A thank you would be nice.
@MrBasilGanglia The US has only ever protected its interests. It only protected Western Europe because a Western Europe dominated by the Soviets was not in its interests. The same is true for today and the future too, because all countries only ever look after their own interests. Countries simply don't have friends.
@robsargent4 Would you expect it to protect the interests of another country?? We in the US give more in charity than any other nation combined and our government (our taxes) gives more in aid to other nations than any other nation...period. That is a fact, but hey, we're the jerks who shit on the world.
@MrBasilGanglia No, I would not expect the US to protect the interests of another country. My point was that no country willingly protects the interests of another country, unless it's in their own interest. When I said the US, I really meant the US Government, but your point about aid may be true, although I'm fairly sure it's the Scandinavian countries who give the highest proportions of their wealth as aid.
@MrBasilGanglia "our government (our taxes) gives more in aid to other nations than any other nation..." In total dollars? Yes, because you're the richest nation. Proportionally? Not even near. Of the nations which committed in 1970 to give 0.7% of their GNP in aid by 1975, only five (Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg, Denmark, and the Netherlands) have achieved it by 2010. The USA ranks 19th in the world, giving approximately 0.2%.
@1981Marcus Sorry, that argument does not wash. The dollars we send are more than twice the next Nation and spend just the same. We produce in the US and that is a good thing and that should not be held against us. 28 billion is a lot of cash.
@1981Marcus Americans gave more than $307.75 billion to their favorite causes despite the economic conditions in 2009. Total giving, when adjusted for inflation, was down 3.6 percent, the steepest decline since the Giving USA annual reports started in 1956. It’s important to keep in mind that despite the downturn, giving still totaled $307 billion.
@MrBasilGanglia First up, im Aussie, not a brit. Second up, you did nothing in the cold war aside from fix your own errors. After the Berlin blockade and the growing tensions that resulted from such problems, the soviets started to have problems with the US over cuba that almost destroyed the world, all the US did was pick up their arse and fix the errors they had caused. And WW1 and 2 were OUR wars and yet america is always glorified in them despite doing very little, aside from the WW2 Pacific
MrBasilGanglia you talk total and utter rubbish. Are you American ? All the US has done is invade countries that they have a political interest in. American people are brainwashed by their own government and media. Your country is far from a democracy. ONLY THE RICH WILL EVER BE IN POWER. A plutocracy of the most extreme kind. Lobbyists and big business decides what happens in America. American people have no say. They hear so much rubbish from the politicians they believe it all.
@billybhoy32 Thank God we are far from a democracy. We are a Republic...which you obviously do not understand. Just say thank you to America and then shut your pie hole.
@MrBasilGanglia It's good that acknowledge the US IS NOT A DEMOCRACY Then how can the US govt. keep preaching about democracy and freedom to the rest of the world ? Americans haven't got a clue about other peoples around the world. One one of the most unfair societies in the world, poor workers rights and totally clueless about the reality of your society. Americans are fed bulls**t by their own media re. politics and the outside world. Wake up. Thank the US for what ? Hollywood - more US myth
@MrBasilGanglia Unfortunately the internet has ass holes like you on it. You are the American policitians ideal American - thick as fuck and can't taste the bull shit you are fed by the media.
@MrBasilGanglia Strictly speaking the BBC isn't directly run by the government, although it's budget is decided by the government, therefore the people who run it are constricted by the government. American TV, on the other hand is almost entirely run as a commercial affair. Not sure which is worse, to be honest.
There's a gorgeous new version of this. Sung by a young woman - completely different take on it - sounds like she's singing into Willie McBride's ear. Have a look at Shaefri - The Green Fields of France.
...and also to all our young soldiers today who are in Iraq and Afghanistan who have been killed or who have come back maimed after having their arms & legs blown off. They will have to live with these injuries for the rest of their lives which must be very hard to come to terms with.
I'd like to dedicate this beautiful, sad & very poignant song to my paternal grandfather who was only 16 when he fought in France during WW1, my maternal grandfather who fought in Burma during WW2, my dad's cousin who was killed in Holland just days before the end of WW2 & to all the young men who valiantly fought & gave their lives for our nation during these wars. Let us not forget, if it wasn't for these young men we wouldn't live in the free country we live in today.
PoeticRyan you talk fuckin rubbish. Many modern day conflicts had the seeds planted by the "British Empire" . Iraq, African conflicts India & Pakistan, Israel. Also the self appointed world police the good ole "US of A" has the blood of many wars on its hands.
@MrBasilGanglia MrBasilGanglia you talk total and utter rubbish. Are you American ? All the US has done is invade countries that they have a political interest in. American people are brainwashed by their own government and media. Your country is far from a democracy. ONLY THE RICH WILL EVER BE IN POWER. A plutocracy of the most extreme kind. Every War Since WW2 up to the war on Terrorism has really been uncalled for. War is necessary and will always happen because we will never be able to live in peace with other nations.
i think that an album / cd with all the corries songs and this a must for the first 10 in the great list if hits as well as flower of scotland , amaz in grace and massacre of glencoe loch lomond
i have in the last 20 yrs been stuck in my own world heard this song on tv tonight and i for 1 would like to say as would many thank you to the men and women who paid with each life for my freedom l.w.f.
@sosfreedome1 : Plenty Corries albums out there, click the link to their website right under the video. This is one of my all time favourites by the corries, although I love most of their humorous ones too. Just a shame the humorous version of Scotland the Brave is not on any CD, and never will be as too politicvally incorrect today.
This is a moving cover of this powerful and haunting song which was written by ERIC BOGLE who is a prolific songwriter living in Australia. The correct name of this song is 'NO MAN'S LAND'. For those who do not know Eric's large volume of work take a look at his website. He has lived in Australia for half a lifetime and I have had the privilege to be present at many of his performances. Peace to all!
paxnme, i hope you recover quickly war cannot be easy, but c'la vie this is what happens in this cruel world of ours, in 1916 there was more men died than the 2nd world war itself, listen to the words and instead of feeling pain, listen and let it heal your wounds.
all the best mate, remember you survived, look at that as a positive not a negatative as we soldiers dont let negatives come into our vocabulary x
When we get rid of the likes of Bush and Blair - we might see a better world - until Middle East is sorted out and Palestine given back there will be no peace!
@sainglain oh yeah that will definitely be possible, i dont see why we didnt just talk to Hitler or Sadam or why we aren't trying to talk Kim Jong-il. I hate to tell you but many people who get in power are there because they want it badly, and those are the people that aren't very.... stable i suppose.
Today people murder without a second thought. Back then people looked out for eachother. Now you're on your own. Shrouded with cigarette smoke, cars, drugs, crime. You think you have it bad but look at the mother or the wife mourning over the husband or son you just murdered. If you saw half the horrors the men in the world wars saw you'd think different about life. Think again. What damage might you do?
Ronnie made a comment many years ago on this song where he said something along the lines of, "People keep asking us why we sing all these anti-war songs."" His response was, Well, maybe one day some one will start listening!
It seems the problem is, if a country has a standing military, there is a compulsion to use it from time to time. But a country must have a strong standing military to protect itself against enemies. Otherwise that country will soon be overthrown. Once I started carrying a switchblade for protection. Part of me started wishing something would happen so I could test my will to use it. I stopped carrying it but a time may come when I wish I had it. It's a paradox.
This song was written by Eric Bogle, a Scottish borderer. He emigrated to Australia many years ago. He also wrote another emotional anti war song - "And the band played waltzing Matilda" remembering the ANZAC massacre at Gallipoli. I was lucky enough to see him live on a concert tour a few years ago in St. Helens. It is well worth listening to his songs. I sometimes played this to the pupils at my school when we had a remembrance day service and got them to sing the chorus.
It is horrible that World war I, wich led to WW II through Versailles treaty and so also to Cold War and communists' reign over half a Europe for almost half a century was supposed to be just a little adventure of European aristocracies and when it turned into that mindless butchery, noone was able or willing to stop it. When USA asked the fighting nations to state their goals, not one of them was able to tell why their youth is being slaughtered in pointless offensives. It was just all wrong.
This song brings me to tears every time I hear it and ievery time I think of The Corries, this is the first song that comes to mind. RIP, Roy Williamson.
God bless you Great Uncle Thomas...You are buried in Tunisia a long long way from home but you are remembered here with much honour and gratitude...and the pipes will play The Flowers Of The Forrest for you...and all of your fellows
The words speak too loudly these days. As of Nov.9/09 133 Canadians have died in Afghanistan. My heart goes out to them all. I salute each and every one of them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Too Right! We are all a set of twats and we are all gonna burn in Hell. Especially that lying War Monger Tony "Weapons of mass distruction" Blair. I hope Satan is sharpening his folk for his sorry arse right now!
What exactly has that to do with `Green Fields of France` by the Scottish Folk duo, The Corries? You know some kids get on here to research a piece of music to do a report on for the fourth grade elementary class. The don`t need the crass vitriol comments like this one. Please add something constructive that enhances either our knowledge of WW1, the Corries, or this song specifically.
it was supposed to be the war to end all wars. the average age of the fallen was 19. the average age of the young people who are researchin WW1 is 19, the average age of the young soldiers serving and dying today in our armed forces is... 19. have we learned or are we still trying to save our fellow man?
no hunni, wwi killed off a whole generation of teenagers, and it has kept up since, most soldiers are young lads, they join up from 16 but are only allowed to serve in 'theatre' from 18
This is indeed a sad song and is about the futility of war. While many think of the broken and maimed bodies, there are also those with shattered minds caused by their war experiences.
Sadly we just never learn, after WW2, there was Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan. I spent time in a clinic and have no longer been able to work becuase of my time in Vietnam. I will have to take medication for PTSD for the rest of my life. I hate war.
this is an anti war song by eric bogle himself a scotsman but to my mind w.mcbrides nationality is not defined but scots australians and irish/ulster folk all sing this
This is such a deeply sad & moving song that really makes you think about both WW1 & WW2 & all the poor young men who fought & died for our freedom today. My grandfather fought in France during WW1-he was only 16 but lied about his age in order to join up. He was lucky to come back but his lungs were
badly damaged by mustard gas. I never knew him as he died about 10yrs before I was born. I grew up listening to The Corries as my dad was a big fan & I used to sing & play guitar with him. Memories.
This song was written by the genius of Eric Bogle as a warning to our generation who have never been to war. If you ever have been to the Menin Gate where all the names of lost soldiers without graves are enscribed. Many soldiers were buried in the mud and some just blown to pieces. The Corries changed the original words slightly in their professional way to make it sing better. The Corries are awesome ... listen to their haunting voices. Fantastic. wonderfull.
I was just watching your video and I wanted to say that The Corries - Green Fields Of France is a really good video

i wonder if they ever did the fields of athenry... anybody know?
i've heard so many versions of it, classical from the dubliners, even from a german goth band called ASP... but i was very surprised to find none fromthe corries.
however... i find this one while searching... and it goes right into the heart...
I think this song should be released to raise money for help the heroes campaign. I think if everybody heard this, it would send the message about. There are boys of younger than 19 out fighting in afghanistan/iraq nowadays!!!!!!!
We'd do well to give this song some SERIOUS thought these days. If you can listen to this and not weep, I feel for your lack of heart. When in God's name are we going to stop letting our young die for nothing?
Well. What breaks my heart, is that our young in fact do NOT die for nothing. They die for a reason: making the mighty ones mightier. Making the rich ones richer. They die for what the ones that we elected, the ones we choose to speak for us call "freedom".
And when you are young, things are so easy to believe in. And even if they would never admit: they, somehow, trust in old idiots (like me).
Well put. And yet I can't help but believe in our heroes. But then the heroes I believe in didn't hide behind someone else to do their fighting either. Because I do believe that freedom is worth fighting for--just not making someone else rich or keeping them in power or seeing that they have profits.
But the Scots know all about wars:the MacGregors versus the Campbells etc. But think of all the forgotten wars, Korea, Malaya where we were - anyone know why? LEST WE FORGET!!!!!
But the question is 'WHEN WILL WE LEARN' that no good comes from fighting.
The only battle worth fighting is the battle of conscience to say NO I WILL NOT KILL!
Although this song does not bare religion, religion is the single biggest trigger of wars past pressent and now doubt in the future.
Why can we not just live in harmony?

Ruaridh1969 1 year ago

MrBasilGanglia 1 year ago
@MrBasilGanglia The US has only ever protected its interests. It only protected Western Europe because a Western Europe dominated by the Soviets was not in its interests. The same is true for today and the future too, because all countries only ever look after their own interests. Countries simply don't have friends.
robsargent4 1 year ago
@robsargent4 Would you expect it to protect the interests of another country?? We in the US give more in charity than any other nation combined and our government (our taxes) gives more in aid to other nations than any other nation...period. That is a fact, but hey, we're the jerks who shit on the world.
MrBasilGanglia 1 year ago
@MrBasilGanglia No, I would not expect the US to protect the interests of another country. My point was that no country willingly protects the interests of another country, unless it's in their own interest. When I said the US, I really meant the US Government, but your point about aid may be true, although I'm fairly sure it's the Scandinavian countries who give the highest proportions of their wealth as aid.
robsargent4 1 year ago
@MrBasilGanglia "our government (our taxes) gives more in aid to other nations than any other nation..." In total dollars? Yes, because you're the richest nation. Proportionally? Not even near. Of the nations which committed in 1970 to give 0.7% of their GNP in aid by 1975, only five (Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg, Denmark, and the Netherlands) have achieved it by 2010. The USA ranks 19th in the world, giving approximately 0.2%.
1981Marcus 1 year ago
@1981Marcus Sorry, that argument does not wash. The dollars we send are more than twice the next Nation and spend just the same. We produce in the US and that is a good thing and that should not be held against us. 28 billion is a lot of cash.
MrBasilGanglia 1 year ago
@MrBasilGanglia Ever heard of the Widow's Mite? Luke 21 1-4. I suppose in your eyes the rich men were more generous than the widow.
1981Marcus 1 year ago

I hate war.

Fantastic. wonderfull.

We'd do well to give this song some SERIOUS thought these days. If you can listen to this and not weep, I feel for your lack of heart. When in God's name are we going to stop letting our young die for nothing?
JeannieTomlin 2 years ago 5
We should teach them to stop this. If we can.
larcebus 2 years ago 4
Well put. And yet I can't help but believe in our heroes. But then the heroes I believe in didn't hide behind someone else to do their fighting either. Because I do believe that freedom is worth fighting for--just not making someone else rich or keeping them in power or seeing that they have profits.
