I was living this in 1998 while this movie was being released. I expected it at the West Coast too. It's that subordinate...a lookalike. Dang... thought that guy was years ago till the second coming of long, meaningful stare....

You are right. When I saw this movie for the first time it brought the idea of a satire upon me. Most of the American citizens won't listen to their peers because they just do not think that what they are explaining is possible. And if listening to a musical artist, they tend to retaliate stating how he is so angry and that none of it is true. How can someone vote, complain, and shit it out again and again?

This remains my favorite movie to date, in so many aspects it can be seen as paranoia w/big brother. Could be seen as man versus creator (God). It has a love story, and in the end he was a modern day hero who didn't have to slay a dragon or save a life.

Truman represent all the industrialized so called "good2go" nations like Belgium, Italy, France, US, Canada, UK,to name a few. Actually the backdrop in which Truman lives is our reality. All props all gimmicks. Our govt here in the US scorns the poor for wanting to rely on government funds, but uses 66% of the total US wealth to keep trillionaire corporations from using their own billions. Guam pays no tax it is fully funded by US tax payer dollars. Just the tip of the iceberg.
