There is a difference between blame and regretting and learning from poor policy choices. America has made mistakes, like we at times have for our own self interest backed foreign leaders who would be criminals in our own country. Yet, we've done a lot of good as well, even when it really wasn't in our own self interest. To move forward and to improve global relations, we have to be willing to admit our mistakes and own them.

You can still love the USA, while being honest about its mistakes.

We live in a country based on a set of beliefs that supports free speech, respect for women, pursuit of happiness, and the freedom to subscribe to whatever religion you want. Locals got into the fight, they had weapons from Warld War I and II, hidden and they joined the fight. Rapid mobilization of volunteers started, loyal Pasdaran forces were gathered. They recalled veterans of the old imperial army & Iranian pilots to join.

And as for the martyrs of the Iran-Iraq war, it was all they had available. Faced with embargos, unable to procure arms (except the Israelis who gave them arms to fight the Iraqis). They made martyrdom a means of military necessity because they had nothing else and Saddam had already pledged to totally overtake the state, he this showed when he began missile attacks on Tehrani citizens. You should check your history. The US helped overthrow Prime Minister Mossedegh who was a democratically elected leader in 1953 to implant the Shah who was horribly oppressive to the Iranian people. Those in government of the old vanguard do not like American culture but the 65% of the population in their mid-twenties or younger know nothing of the revolution and religion is not a major part of their lives, they actually love American culture far more than the Arabs.

What in Gods name are you talking about? This was seen as the biggest failure of the Carter Administration, the fall of the Shah, caused by Ayatollah Khomeini. After the Shah went into exile Carter allowed him in to the US for medical treatment. And I don't know why you think this is a left-wing/right-wing thing. Its just simply a historical account of the revolution.

Wouldn't you say that is a bit subjective historicism. As you remember, Carter was the human rights president, at least he wanted to be. Over and over he advised the Shah to tone down the abuses on his own people. If the Shah had paid more attention, he may not have been overthrown. Simply saying Carter didn't support the Shah is not the same as assisting the overthrow. By that logic, one could argue that the US helped bring the rise of Hitler by not helping to curb German hyperinflation.
