I earned a GED 2 years ahead of my graduating class, I was 16. I then worked in transportation for many years and in my mid 30's I earned an associates degree in electronics. My mother also earned a GED then went on to college to earn a bachelors degree.
My niece is set to graduate from high school righteously the first in our family to do so. Where we are from it is easy to get by with minimal education. Some have become millionaires with less than 6 th grade education.
