  • "and then here's some kosher salt...." "RALF"

  • You just obliterated a great recipe! NEVER use Apple cider vinegar only white ! You can hardly buy apple cider vinegar in Germany ! You use White onions, not Chives plusMustard and beef broth! 2 tsp of sugar and one of salt and NEVER pepper! Mix the dressing in a separate bowl so yo can taste it. The potato salad has to sit for at least 12 hours at room temperature! Then you add Bacon, bacon drippings and fresh parsley . You drain the salad after that! Any substitutions will change the taste!

  • NEVER use olive oil on German potato salad ! Change things and you change the taste! Besides MSG is not as bad as you are led to believe! It is right up there with iodized salt!

  • Hi, thank you for sharing this recipe. I grew up in America but come from a German household. Both of my parents are from Germany. I am always interested in learning new recipies. Thank you again for sharing.

  • @WhiteTeaRoses315 sehr gut.......my mother in law Omi is now at our farm visiting..so were cooking loads of German food....great cuisine...very unknown but excellent. We had a great crop of spring potatoes, they looked and tasted like the taters I ate in Bavaria....used my kartoffel dampfer to steam them (spelling??)

  • @keithsnow Hi Keith. I hope you will share any new German recipes you get from your mother-in-law with us your viewers. I am always interested in new recipes. I found your channel when I did a search for a cabbage recipe and came across your mother-in-law's recipe that you shared with us your viewers. I liked it; it was good. One thing led to another and I eventually ended up on this potato salad recipe?!? I look forward to watching more of your videos. I sent you a friend invite. Thanks again.

  • Looks great, but if you're a less than expert chef, better to cut them on the chopping board I think than lose your fingers!

  • OMG! You americans make cooking too seriously! It's fun for me,and it doesn't have to be from point to point, just use your imagination, and do it good!

  • its easier if you scrape the skin off with the knife instead of cutting it off , thats my 2 cents worth

  • OMFG this isnt a recipe, its just potatoes and vinegar to me. oh and by the way, you peel potatoes with your hands while theyre warm!

  • Looks good to me.

Just curious, but what ingredient did you leave out?

  • There are no wrong ways on exactly on how to prepare dishes. That is the beauty of cooking! If how you do it is right for you, then do what you do best! Love the recipe glad this is here on youtube!

  • Nonsense! This is not a German potato salad. Our potato salad is more complex. You need: pickles mayonnaise Spring onions Salt Pepper Chives Parsley Canned peas boiled eggs Boil potatoes and peel. In a bowl, mix the dressing. Mayonnaise with pepper and salt, add chopped spring onions and pickles. Stir parsley and chives. The peeled potatoes into slices and stir into the dressing. Finally, the boiled eggs into quarters and arrange on the salad. Please excuse my bad English.
  • @Knabbermann

Der !versucht! ein bayrischen Kartoffelsalat, da hat Mayo gar nichts drin zu suchen.

  • @TheWarkator

Ach so.... Danke für die Info. Aber ist das wirklich alles? Mehr kommt an einen bayrischen Salat nicht dran? Warum schwärmen denn alle so für den? Kapiere ich nicht! Aber naja... ist wohl einfach geschmacksache.

  • @Knabbermann

Natürlich kommt da mehr dran, Gemüsebrühe, Räucher-Speck usw. Aber ich mag lieber den mit Majo :)

  • looks really good!

  • I'm from Canada, this is a favorite at country style picnics. Peel tham first, use "Yukon Gold" ptatoes that have a white skin. Use Canola oil. High in Omega 3 and 6.

  • Hi,

first of all, thanks Keith for the recipe.

I lived in Germany for many years and I can only agree with wonderbung. There are many different recipes for "Kartoffelsalat". I also learned, that the south makes it with vinegar and oil, like Keith made his. The north on the other hand makes it with mayonaise and cornichons.

But don't argue, fact is, this is a good recipe :)

  • People. Please? There are around 730,000 German potato salad recipes listed on Google. Just because your granny makes it different than Keith doesn't make hers the only "authentic" one. Pull your heads out.

  • all people i know which once lived on the country side(like my gandma, my girls father etc) somewhere on german (or former german) ground, do this with mayo and pickeld cucumbers.

    but...

    whatever^^

  • That is definetely NOT GERMAN.

  • WOW nice Vid!

I would recommend using white wine vinegar and please use vegetable oil, the taste is more neutral. Olive-oil is just fancy.

  • looks great can't to try it

  • most people love this stuff..

perfect for a tailgate party..needs no refrigeration and can sit for hours only getting better with time. Great with brats and dogs or just a side dish...

  • Keith thanks for the simple and great recipe. I was looking for something like this and this is just perfect. Cheers dude!

  • cheer to you!

I hope you enjoy the recipe...

    Best

  • that ain't german potato salad

  • I'll be sure to tell my mother in law who grew up and lived in German until 1971 that her family recipe is NOT German....

    Keith

  • and it needs a little more onions, bacon, mustard....so much missing....

  • it takes discipline to let the simple recipe stand on it;s own... all that other stuff just makes the potato flavor

    Keith

  • you HAVE to cut them when they're warm because real german potato salad is served warm...and I know it because I am from germany ^^

  • finally somebody with a clue...that is exactly how Omi does it....

I failed to mention that...and they were not warm becuase of the filming day complexities..

    keith

  • @hammiundfitz

You're right--we use that one in Canada. Warm in winter, cold in summer. Thanks!

  • german potato salad is usually not served warm here in germany. there are 2 styles of german potatoe salad: the bavarian one is made with a bouillon and chopped pieces of gammon and a splash of vinegar. this version sometimes is served warm.

in northern and middle germany potatoe salad is made with mayonnaise and it is served cold.

these recipes are totally different and it depends on where your "omi" had lived on what´s the traditional potato receipe :-)

  • @hammiundfitz no you don't need to serve it warm .there are so many different potatoe salad recipes(bayrischer ,schwäbischer )and all of them are "real" .

  • There is no such thing as german potato salad with olive oil.

  • OMI !!! It's OMA...red potatoes,really any type of vinegar,bacon,salt & pepper,chives..

anyone knows oil is always last just for texture!!! Both my parents are from BAVARIA..this yoyo is just a commercial bozo...anytime jerk!!!!!!!!

Other people are making some kind of soupy messes with all that crappy drippins.. I like making this out of respect to my mom ,and it taste great.....Way too much non calorie stuff..What are we making DIET POTATO SALAD...

  • You 4got something and i'm not telling :D

  • verry healthy and vegan!

  • why call it german if it isnt german at all :\

  • same potato salad we make in my country..I've never made other kind in my life and it is absolutely delicious.
