March of 1978, HBO was installed on the enormous 27 inch Zenith Color TV in what was lovingly called, the “rec” room, of my family home in Green Brook, NJ.
From that point one I became obsessed with two things. Cable TV and HBO Guides!
Vintage HBO Guides on Facebook already has about 15 complete guides and grows bigger every day...check it out!
@bluenowait No doubt, I definitely see it every so often myself, as well. I was recently able(thanks to the dates I've heard others post about when HBO first separated the B and the O on their logo, identify a sign I saw recently next to an older motel(and per comments on other videos) as likely from either 1981 or 1982.
There were video machines available long before the first VHS or even Beta machines, usually they were called VTR instead of VCR. They used huge 3/4 inch videotapes the size of a large hardcover book. We had one called "The Great Time Machine" that probably weighed more than the TV set.
Ahh yes, Quasar's "The Great Time Machine", also known as VX (it's lesser known official name)! This was a very short-lived format developed and made by Quasar in 1974 (IIRC), shortly before Betamax & VHS came and stole the limelight in the early days of the "Video Format War".....
This logo is different than the current one, with the o next to the b close together. Around 1980, the B was separated from the o, and in 1983, the logo became 3d for the first time in the now legendary feature presentation intro.
Around 1985, IIRC. Before then, all you needed was just a satellite dish & receiver, it was transmitted in the clear until sometime in '85. After then, well, that what's what prompted "Captain Midnight" to hijack HBO that same year). :)
In fact, there is a HBO promo here on YouTube from '86 that discusses their switch to being scrambled 24/7 (prior, it was only 12 hrs a day): watch?v=Hacx07usrH8

No they wouldn't. I see tons of lodging signs with the HBO logo to promote the fact that network is available for free in the hotel rooms.

blackmoviefan 4 years ago
Why is it called home box office, isn't the box office where you pay the exorbitantly high price for a ticket not where one watches the movie?
dingorex 4 years ago
That is why it says home first.
