  • Back when they used to have the HBO Guide.

  • Yep, forget that "HBO stuff, this is Home Box Office bitch!

  • Nyan HBO!!

  • this is old home box office from mid-late 1970's

  • actually 1978, because in 1976, HBO continued to use to 1975 ID slide.

  • this is "Home Box Office" lol.

  • I think I've seen this exact logo on a few motel signs, while traveling.

  • hbo? I think they would be sued lol.

  • No they wouldn't. I see tons of lodging signs with the HBO logo to promote the fact that network is available for free in the hotel rooms.

  • Ohhh ha ha nvm I didint understand what you where saying. my bad.

  • @bluenowait Yeah the same hotels that advertise they have color TV.

  • @bluenowait No doubt, I definitely see it every so often myself, as well. I was recently able(thanks to the dates I've heard others post about when HBO first separated the B and the O on their logo, identify a sign I saw recently next to an older motel(and per comments on other videos) as likely from either 1981 or 1982.

  • This is cool, thanks for posting.

  • Please feel free to visit my Yahoo group dedicated to Vintage HBO Guides from 1976 to 1985!

Just go to yahoo groups and type in:

    Vintage HBO Guides

  • how was this recorded? vhs wasnt out until 1978

  • beta

  • Or film, but I have to agree with you. Film couldn't have that much quality.

  • There were video machines available long before the first VHS or even Beta machines, usually they were called VTR instead of VCR. They used huge 3/4 inch videotapes the size of a large hardcover book. We had one called "The Great Time Machine" that probably weighed more than the TV set.

  • Ahh yes, Quasar's "The Great Time Machine", also known as VX (it's lesser known official name)! This was a very short-lived format developed and made by Quasar in 1974 (IIRC), shortly before Betamax & VHS came and stole the limelight in the early days of the "Video Format War".....

  • This logo is different than the current one, with the o next to the b close together. Around 1980, the B was separated from the o, and in 1983, the logo became 3d for the first time in the now legendary feature presentation intro.

  • THE HBO IN SPACE IS *NOT* CGI!!!!!!

  • He didn't say it was CG.

  • Damn, hbo was on back in the 70s?

  • Yep, HBO started on November 8, 1972.

  • oh my freaking god it was on that early! so when did they start encrypting?

  • Around 1985, IIRC. Before then, all you needed was just a satellite dish & receiver, it was transmitted in the clear until sometime in '85. After then, well, that what's what prompted "Captain Midnight" to hijack HBO that same year). :)

In fact, there is a HBO promo here on YouTube from '86 that discusses their switch to being scrambled 24/7 (prior, it was only 12 hrs a day): watch?v=Hacx07usrH8

  • lol scary to watch that kind of logo since it was made in the 70's

  • Why is it called home box office, isn't the box office where you pay the exorbitantly high price for a ticket not where one watches the movie?

  • That is why it says home first.

  • Thank you SO MUCH for posting this...it used to be on here, but got lost some time ago. Thanks again!

  • Cool! :D
