' Mathews pulled this trick on numerous occasions.' What a load of shit. What he did this day was not in character. Mathews was genuinely tough & the player of the century according to most pundits.
Its a wonder Jacko didnt run up and destroy Matthews, think Jackos adventures that day got him 8 weeks and hid dad died of a heart attack soon after. Even at age 20 Steven Hocking didnt take any crap from anyone either
Yeah Bruns was a little pepperhead but Matthews pulled this trick on numerous occasions and finally got his just deserts. Just wondering who snotted him?
Bruns was a dirty little sniper who got what he deserved im sorry. Ok he didn't do anything this day but you can't tell me he wasn't dirty. Watch the 89 Grand Final and you will see what i mean
From what I remember, Neville Bruns received a broken jaw in two places, and "Lethal" Leigh Matthews was charged with criminal conduct for his action.
I don't believe there was any call for "Lethal" Leigh to do what he did to Neville Bruns.
Exactly I'd forgotten how much more easily paid holding the ball was back then, compared to today they rarely pay it anymore unless the ball is dived on. Notice Darren Flanigan get done right towards the end.

Only if you call eye-gouging Dipper dirty while a couple other cowards held him down.

No, there was no reason.
Leigh had no idea why he did it; "and I thought to myself, 'Why did I do that?'" (Leigh Matthews 100 Years of Football - 1996)
IT was the heat of the match. Bruns wasn't a dirty player.
Jackson didn't help with his antics this game. He was disliked by Hawthorn, and not respected much by Kelvin Moore.
But I think football in the 80s had character and the game was allowed to flow, compared to the pissy free kicks we see today.
Bring back the 80s!
