Honestly, I don't think you can have a detailed ranking system for quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. The league has changed so much in so many different aspects. Brady is one of the best QB's in football, yes. But you can't say he was number 1. Montana and Young were also one of the best. And soon Tebow will be there too- lol jk.
I usually agree with the beast known as elpres but he made somemistakes in his anal-ysis. You mentioned that Marino was the best because recievers used to get raped by DB's back in the day... but Montana and Young had to deal with that as well. Also, the QB's nowadays are completely protected with the helmet to helmet rules and the "Tom Brady" rule where you can't hit a QB below the thighs. Montana, Marino, and Young didn't have that luxury.

If by complex defenses you mean, defenses that when they blatantly strip the ball and make him fumble it, it gets over turned because of a nonsense tuck rule, and whenever anyone thinks of touching brady they get a 15 yard penalty. Guys could have hit Montana in the head with an axe and no one would have thrown a flag. Brady has so much time and protection because of the new rules in the NFL its crazy

The funny thing with his argument is that outside of different personnel, Tom Brady's never played in any other system BUT the one that he has in New England LOL Montana might be the only quarterback to ever go to a totally different system (when he went to Kansas City) and still perform well, old as he was and all. If he wanted to make an argument for a non-system QB he should have just stuck with John Elway. He and Dan Marino probably come closest to being great non-system QBs

If today's defenses are so hard and complex today compared to the years past, then why is this league become a pass happy league? There is a chart, I forgot what website it was, since the 1970's till now, the average yards of all the QBs combined in their years steadily grow. I think if you give the older QB's training camps, they can do just as well, if not better, than the QB's of now.

Montana was a stud and won at Notre Dame as well and in the 2 years he played in KC went to the playoffs both years and got to the afc title game with NO players. I respect Brady but in todays game if you SNEEZE on a qb u get a 15 yard penalty AND a $50,000 fine. When Montana was playing u could kill a qb and nothing. Hell, one year he waa knocked out and had to have back surgery to fuse vertebre so he could play.

there is not a team in the league right now that could compete with montanas 49 ers or aikmans cowboys or even the giants of that time..as far as defense,they run the same same defense they have always run all they do is disguise the look...the only only real difference is in the past it was more aggresive in your face defense, now its keep everything in front of you and then attack the ball which is why you see all the passing yards. (bend but dont break) montanna is the best.

Steve Young started in the USFL, then went to TB, which was historically bad.
Joe Montana went to the AFC championship with Kansas City. If he didnt get hurt that game he most likely would have beaten the 49ers in the Superbowl.
Without Tom Brady, Pats went 11-5. And Brady lost in the Superbowl...Montana never did that. You can make a case that Young was a product of the system, but Montana has won on every level. Brady couldnt even start at Michigan. Brady is a system quarterback.
