@MrChestypuller1775 Unfortunately not. i was medically retired in october of 1990. i was an 0311 ( grunt) with Bravo 1/1 and we were on west pac in the philippines. i lost my foot in the propellor of a combat rubber raiding craft (zodiac). oh boy, 29 stumps, i was supposed to go there out of SOI to the 7thMEB, but 2 days before we graduated, my orders were changed to Camp Pendleton. thank god! i was out at the stumps in 89 for CAX. that place SUCKS! thanks for your father's service. take care!

They do actually exist! They don't really look like bagpipes, but its a long mouthpiece and rod that you blow into this box which is connected to the bottom of the rod, the box is an amp that simulates a bagpipe sound and the drones sound. There really cool, and very cheap as a matter of fact!

As for radioguy55 the pipes, like any instrument, were challenging to begin with, but I had no great difficulty or struggle to learn them. I learned fairly quick (winning my first grade 5 competition 4 months after starting on the practice chanter and a month after starting on the pipes). That's not to brag or anything. I'm just saying if you want to get good at it, force yourself to practice every day. If you want to become great at it, you must become obsessed with it (that was my case).

I'm from a small town in Ontario Canada called Cornwall, and there is this guy who (in the summer) plays the bagpipes right near one of our malls, and in our city parks... that's what sparked my love for the bagpipes!

@nubb1337 I was once a grade 2 piper, now i grade the up and comming piper's oh and side drummers, there again im in Edinburgh Scotland working for the military,, do you know there are pipers and drummers who have played at the Edinburgh Tattoo who have only been in the army 4 or 5 months with no prior experience, and these guys can hardly speak English, no bullshit, the Ghurka rifles can play on parade after 4 to 5 months practice,how they do ,i have no idea, it took me 4 years to learn..

I'm gonna go with the grade II piper and my own knowledge of piping (not competitivethough) and say that it does take a long time to get the embellishments and get very proficient at them. My teacher said I moved at above average rate and it still took me about 2/3 of a year to get off the chanter mostly.

@RabbiPanda I really dont know much about what types of pipes to get. My advice is first get a teacher. He'll tell you to go out and buy what is called a chanter. This is what you learn on. When you know how to play some tunes then he'll tell you to get pipes and thats when you can ask him where and how to get pipes.
