"Thee(sic) was never a white girl hung(sic) in America"
Mary Surrat was hanged for her alleged participation in the conspiracy to assassinate the tyrant and war criminal Abraham Lincoln. Poetic justice for the mass execution of 38 Lakota Native Americans , slow-hanged at Mankota, Minnesota the day after Christmas,1862.
The reason she's not resisting is simple: the "Reverend" is one of her friends in disguise. Notice how she keeps looking at him the whole time? She's trusting that he has a plan. And she's right, you can see he had a blade hidden in the Bible and used it to cut the rope the instant the trap was sprung.
if yall had seen the movie from beginning to end yall would know that the priest is one of her friends in disguise.. note how he cuts the robe when she drops. as for the sillyness of this movie.. is a comedy for crying out loud.
This hanging was just as silly as the the whole movie itself. I really doubt if you ever were on your way to the gallows the authorities would allow you to dress and look that pretty.
I agree. A plain black dress would have been more appropriate. It was silly in the extreme -no hood and no straps on her wrists or legs but they seem to have got the gallows fairly accurate
I like the dress but she went far too stately- no protest or struggle from such a fiesty girl !!! They could hardly have hanged her without some restraints on her wrists and legs
@fuzzbal49 Yes, I would have expected she'd put up a fight - not because she was scared, but just out of anger. They probably would have to at least handcuff her for the walk to the gallows. And if she was really stubborn, one of the deputies might have to just throw her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, and carry her kicking and cursing. What a humiliating way to go!
And once she was up on the gallows, they definitely should have put her in some proper restraints, and a hood.
I agree. A fight or some resistance would have been more authentic. The crowd would have appreciated it as accounts of 19th century hangings recall. It wouldn't have been easy for her to manage her skirts climbing up to the gallows so maybe been carried was an option. But the lack of a hood and leg and wrist straps made this 'hanging' a farce!!!!!!

Lamest hanging EVER! Why aren't her hands tied behind her back, for one thing?

It's a really cute dress. I'd love to be hanged just like that! And I wish I looked like her, too :)
