I have got round to watching this properly tonight. I got 35 minutes through the video and I started to cry... as I realised how much of a disadvantage I was at as a child from a broken home it dawned on me how much I have achieved. My confidence had been shattered from my environment but I made it to university in the end. I do believe we can do anything we set our minds to. It's not the start that counts, but how you finish.
scintillating, inspirational, informative, thought provoking, mind changing; presented with clarity, enthusiasm and wit; a masterpiece and certainly one to be shared with family and friends.
What I like about this is that it related to what alot of motivational speakers like les brown says :) our brains our amazing, until you experiance it for yourself you will never understand how brilliant you are
the baby reacts to feelings it does not mather what you say but how you say it !!!
always be very carfull when it's asleep because it senses tensions . parents need to know that they have a real responsabillity and need to be more aware :-)
people in the category under 20 are probably too busy with things their brain is keeping them busy with.. like what to wear, what new feature their new phone has got, what their friends think of them, etc. and these things form their being and layout a pavement which they will follow in the rest of their life's
too bad that all this is like a big commercial for products that you can only buy 4 money. There is this free brain training software, called "BRAIN WORKSHOP" that uses dual n-back task that is actually proven to increase IQ and fluid intelligence. try it out
@paulflute Do yourself a favor: write out the part of the talk you quoted on the left-hand side of a piece of paper, then write out the case you made for why it constituted "myopic anthropcentic[sic] arrogance" on the right. Now look at what you've written and try to impartially connect the two, word for word point for point. Hopefully you'll realize that nothing the Dr. said indicated that he believes humans are the goal and peak of evolution.
@seanmft .. thanks for your reply.. i disagree with you one that one though.. which is fine.. we are allowed to disagree.. as it happens i did watch the rest of the lecture and liked him and his work very much but to say a monkey's intelligence is 'on the path to us but behind' shows an overtly human biased, naïve and in my view simply incorrect understanding of the nature of intelligence
@paulflute The quote you're referring to: "Macaque old world monkeys are smart; they're in a sense on the path to us, not so many million years back". Immediately prior to speaking the above he talks about how, in the studies described, monkeys are used because their brains are SIMILAR to human's. Since we know that monkeys and humans have a common ancestor and that ancestor had a brain-size the same as many modern monkeys, the state of their brains are IN A SENSE on the path to us.
@paulflute Generally when someone obstinately hears something that isn't there it's because they have a pet point they like to argue and they're looking for a forum to argue it on. I'm just trying to help you with your boggled perception so maybe you'll stop coming across as a buffoon with a chip on your shoulder.
@paulflute In case you genuinely can't figure it out, his point was this: Monkeys are useful study subjects because their brains work similar to ours as a consequence of our two species sharing a recent common ancestor.
A cuttlefish or an Octopus, no matter how intelligent, wouldn't make a good study subject in this sense because any findings about the nature of cephalopod intelligence would be far less likely to hold any meaning concerning the nature of human intelligence.
@paulflute Since we are primates and macaques are closely related primates with similar genetics, it's reasonable to say that we diverged recently("not so many million years ago") Since the brain size and daily life of macaques haven't changed significantly since the days of our common ancestor yet ours have, it's reasonable to say that macaques are "in a sense, on the path to us". i.e. they're a good representation of a state intelligence that lies along our evolutionary past.
@seanmft also please don't confuse disagreeing with somebody to misunderstanding them..
and please keep youtube replies civil and less patronizing. if we can't have a civil debate on a lecture like this then heaven help the rest of internet content.. thank you. paul. ;9)
@paulflute Yes, Intelligence and brain are not the same concept, obviously. They do have a relationship, no matter how complicated or varying that relationship might be. Brain size in primates has been demonstrated to be a reliable predictor of intelligence. Invertebrate intelligence can't be reliably predicted by comparison with mammals of similar brain size because of significantly divergent nervous systems, yet cephalopods have larger brains than other less intelligent invertebrate class.
@paulflute I've noticed that you've moved on from saying 'humans aren't the goal of evolution', to 'it's wrong to say monkey intelligence is on the path to us but behind', to 'describing any form of intelligence as being on the path to any other form is a misunderstanding'. I think misunderstanding is the key word here. He even adds "in a sense..." to his statement. But for some reason you wanted to hear "humans are the goal of evolution". Why?
@seanmft Hey Sean.. thanks for your replies and sorry for very slow response.. been moving house and this fell out of memory.. thanks for taking the time time write with such enthusiasm.. I happen to disagree with alomst every point you make but your energy was helpful in focussing my thoughts. I can't respond in detail any more on limited word youtube posts so if you are genuinely interested to hear my thoughts please mail me with a regular e-mail address and i will try and write them out.. p.
@paulflute What you mean to say is: don't conflate disagreement with misunderstanding. I'm saying that you are purposefully misunderstanding so you can argue your pet point which I suspect goes like this: Humans are destructive to the planet and that isn't an intelligent act, how we define intelligence is somehow wrong and humans aren't necessarily the smartest animal.
"agree to disagree" implies that there is only subjective opinion involved and no definable truth.
@paulflute: I argued against/commented on what you wrote, and I told you what I SUSPECTED your viewpoint was. Expressing a suspicion is different from making an assumption. I did not argue against my own suspicion. You should never be flattered by attention, only by praise. I have a morbid fascination with your ability to see what isn't there, and ignore what is.
@paulflute I see irony in your espousing of "deep listening" and in your warning against assumption. Your seeming ineptitude at listening and or your assumptions about the speaker in this video are what prompted my initial response to your comment.
@paulflute lol, I'd like to hear you explain how I'm "stuck in semantics". To me you appear to massively conflate concepts, misuse words, or both.
You seem only to want to avoid looking ignorant. I have no interest in you personally, why should I? You made a public statement to which I replied publicly, but now you want a private conclusion. If your desire to appear right is eventually overcome by your desire to be right, I'd like to witness that publicly; otherwise there is compromise.
@paulflute I don't think that I'm particularly interested in your thoughts, not more so than in anyone else's. But I was and am curious to know how assumption led you to argue against Humans being the "goal and peak of evolution". And I still SUSPECT that you had a point you wanted to argue -since I don't think you've ever denied it explicitly- in the comments, and am still mildly curious to know what that was.
Kids, live with your kids! Think about it, while they are going thru this process, you can do it again. the kids are going to be themselves which will be different for you...........
Twins separated at birth show the same cognitive abilities similarities as those living at same home. Adopted children show no correlation in cognitive abilities to biological children in that families. Also, studies have shown that even with a intensive training, true, you get the effect on children IQs, but when grown up it levels down to what they have started with.
While plasticity is certainly an important aspect of brain, you have to be careful when extrapolating it to social engineering.
If the guy would draw breath properly, I would find this talk a lot easier to listen to. As it is, his shallow breathing is causing me to sit here and draw deep breaths to compensate!!!
Maybe I am overlooking something, but two neighboring cultures, one that talks to their babies and one that does not, showing no difference; did this study take into account that the babies not being spoken to directly are with adults or older children 24/7 and are immersed in the sounds of language - probably as much as the babies being spoken to?
Mr. Scientist draws conclusions from a sample of one. Lack of motor skills does not preclude 'thinking' . Neonates have been observed to exhibit different tendancies or 'personalities' from birth. (Some infants are alert/ interactive from birth, especially if not drugged via the mother's blood supply during delivery. Brain plasticity always seemed obvious. Details vary, but humans seek comfort (food, shelter, social status, etc) and reproduce. What's new?
I just wanted to thank Dr. Merzenich and Google so much for this excellent disclosure of ability to enhance brain function as I age. I've bookmarked the Brain Gym website and I plan to go through that program. 'Fascinating also to raise the question of what effects on the brain are of extensive use of Google, other computing contexts and TV (I'm subject to extensive computing myself but regard most TV as brain-harmful) and to examine it and control it. Thank you very much again.
Great presentation! very interesting subject here, I just had to look into it about. cause I know I was starting to lose the ability on work on my computer and remembering well like before.
@RobMonty248 wtf is a "TV frequency modulator"? Only the audio portion of a television signal is FM the picture is AM. And the "Frequency Modulator" would be on the broadcasting side of the TV not the receiving end. So are you telling us to watch TV on mute and it will make us smarter? You wanna be smarter? Make sure you are getting enough DHA, folic acid, B vitamins, and micronutrients. Keep your free radicals down with antioxidants. And most importantly EXERCISE YOUR BRAIN SOMETIMES!
@Burrit0Bandito you sound upset, which is what tv does to the mind, figure it out before its too late and beyond this, please skip replying to me in the future, thanks.
I am a psychic healer who can heal from thousands of miles away. I know what im talking about if you understand it or not, TV inhances hatred through frequencies and through hateful situations. Study it yourself beforeyou bark at me for telling you the truth, look it up before you talk to me again, thanks.
@RobMonty248 psychic healer? LMAO!!! Okay dude! You're nuts... oh and btw I did look it up... In fact I have taken several classes on modern electronic communication. you are just making shit up, and If I am wrong then give me a URL to prove it and I will happily apologize and give you your credit. Im not upset. I just don't think people should spread false info. Believe whatever you want you nut job. ;)
@Burrit0Bandito I channel in a song on my site, it should change your magnetics and soon you will experience pyschic stuff.
I can do as I say, just cause you never heard of it does not mean it is not.
Who made you the smartest man in the world?
TV is alot like a radio station, so is the mind, figure it out.
TV freqeuncies, mind frequencies, magnetics. Look into television to start, what it does to the mind. Look at my playlists and become a healer yourself, why make me prove it to you?
@Burrit0Bandito If i can heal people, you should be able to also, why not prove it to yourself to find out if its true? I know it is. Many said yea right to me before and left the session simply amazed. I do not work on dis-beleivers because of the changes it brings. Meditation on being shown the truth will start your proof, Prove it to yourself, why do you need me to prove anything? A good skeptic tests the theories not just bark at them like a child. Thanks for the chat.
@Burrit0Bandito One is ripleys beleive it or not, CHi Master emiting HEat from his hands over 200 degrees on Infrared Cam for all to see.
This is ancient stuff, always been around. They even speak of him healing cancer with it. Just cause you never heard of it does not mean it is not, its ignorance that makes you say its not, which is because you never practiced it, its easy actually simple yet you can not even beleive it, HAH!
@Medech2012 While what you say is certainly true, the effect is going to be significantly less useful. The kind of training he is recommending is an intense experience designed to 'jump start' the brain's learning processes as opposed to the gradual (slow) changes that can occur with more paced methods such as meditation.

You said attention spam xD. Also you said to instead of too. Also you pulled the number 5 right out of your ass. Biggining haha good one! Idiot, idiot, idiot.
ttbiggestfan: There are lots of channels posting long videos, this one is google's. Since they own youtube, there should be no surpise :-). Others must have some sort of agreement. Search for MIT or uctelevision, if you want some amazingly interesting - and I can't stress that enough - examples.
Try comparative Religion If the Pope admits evolution is no longer just a theory & Adam & Eve & the talking snake in a tree are not historical but mythical figures & original sin's a man made concept then who is this con man Jesus the Christ the redeemer of the fraud original sin that the church says can trace his family line back to Adam & Eve who never existed in the first place?
Sounds like 3 days in the belly of a fish-Inn-tomb to me
Be born again believe & stay a child forever or grow up
"But the architecture of the human brain is nonetheless profoundly limited. For example, there is room for only about one hundred trillion interneural connections in each of our skulls. A key genetic change that allowed for the greater cognitive ability of humans compared to that of our primate ancestors was the development of a larger cerebral cortex as well as the development of increased volume of gray-matter tissue in certain regions of the brain." astonded by such myopic anthropcentic arrogance from such an intelligent man..

I think that daily meditation contributes to all those factors: think faster, focus better, remember more, rewiring the brain, stay younger...

@Medech2012 yea and turning of TV frequency modulators.
=-)
RobMonty248 1 year ago

RobMonty248 1 year ago

@RobMonty248 I super cool story in my bro on my riveting tale, chap.

@Medech2012 I totally aggree... I have recently consumed Shinzen Young's audiobook, and quite a few ideas are the same.
SalsaTiger83 1 year ago
@Medech2012 While what you say is certainly true, the effect is going to be significantly less useful. The kind of training he is recommending is an intense experience designed to 'jump start' the brain's learning processes as opposed to the gradual (slow) changes that can occur with more paced methods such as meditation.

ttbiggestfan: There are lots of channels posting long videos, this one is google's.

"But the architecture of the human brain is nonetheless profoundly limited. For example, there is room for only about one hundred trillion interneural connections in each of our skulls. A key genetic change that allowed for the greater cognitive ability of humans compared to that of our primate ancestors was the development of a larger cerebral cortex as well as the development of increased volume of gray-matter tissue in certain regions of the brain."
