Phillips anchored Dateline NBC from its inception until July 2, 2007, when NBC, due to cost-cutting, did not renew his $7 million contract. His anchor seat has not been replaced.
I looked forward to the end as a child where you could hear the directors and producers talking over the headset. Little did I know I would be the one talking over the headset years later as a TV newscast director :)
I was 10 years old when this aired; but looking back at this video, it is hard to believe how much has changed about these theme compared to current themes.
I wish Dateline would bring back its own original theme, instead of the CSI like theme that can be heard today.
I agree that Dateline should bring back its original theme. To be honest, the CSI-like theme means that the show focuses more on murder/courtroom stories...
I suddenly lost interest in Dateline after Stone Phillips left in 2007. It is always a pleasure that many YouTubers post old Dateline clips to remind us of its glory days.
Is it me, or did you post this video and the Dateline Timeline video from the same Dateline broadcast from May 8, 1996?!
To the rest of you Dateline fanatics:
Do you have any idea who did the voiceover work ("This is Dateline Wednesday..." or "From our studios in New York..")from this particular broadcast? Well I do... ;) (I wanted to see if I am not the only one who recognizes the voiceover work!)
The first time I have watched "Dateline" was in early 1997, and the clip mark at 01:52 is what I remembered most at the time("'Dateline,' with Jane Pauley and Stone Phillips...") I don't remember seeing the Control Room bit at the closing credits, though. Did they use that on every edition of "Dateline" at the time you have recorded this video?
Overall, thanks for posting this video. Brings back memories!
@princeofdarknessxyz1 Wikipedia didn't say, it just says years active as News Anchor 1986 to 2007.
Phillips lives in New York with his wife, Debra, and their son, Streeter Phillips (born 1988).

1:54- sounds like the who's who of NBC News (and you'll also note some irony at 2:00)

The voiceover for this particular Dateline broadcast was Les Marshak. Nowadays, he does the opening voiceover for NBC's "Today" show program.
I still think this video and the Dateline Timeline video were from the same broadcast!
I will stop talking now.

Whoa...that long ago.
I didn't start watching brief clips of "Dateline" until July 1996 when MSNBC was launched. I watched "Dateline" in full beginning in early 1997.

Oh...forget about my earlier question, stiffkids2006. I just saw one of your videos that answered my question completely!
Thanks for posting this video! :-)
