This is a great recording of a classic band piece that is a kind of rite of passage for all bands that think they are of high caliber. I played this 2x when I was in HS (bass clarinet!), and hearing it again makes me realize that even just listening to it, you get nervous, because you know HOW MUCH there is that can go wrong.
Clarinet part is insane! When my friend and I saw it we just started uncontrollably laughing because of the "Are you serious about this?!" runs at the end. It's a ton of fun though! xD
whoa.....im from washington middle school too and am in the senior band!!!!!!!! i play clarinet and our part IS kinda ghastly. but im actually kinda working on it, and its not TOO bad at the beginning. i hope mrs. barr cuts the band a little slack. :D
Senior band at Washington middle school in Seattle, Washington (USA) just got this today...looks evil... I play trumpet, and even our part is a bit hard... The flute and clarinet part looks ghastly though... but our band of 99, 1 sixth grade percussionist, and the rest 7th graders and 8th graders, started this today... last year we played variations on a Korean Folk Tune, and that was really hard too!!! but wish us luck as we struggle with it... Thanks!
Anyone who has ever played this will agree that this song is one of the hardest pieces of music you will ever play in your life, no matter how old you are. This song made me humble with my baritone saxophone playing (even though im still pretty boss at bari sax) but seriously, great piece of music
@5610winston YOU PLAYED THIS IN SIXTH GRADE, what school did you go to, our high school band would probably play some thing like this and the sixth graders that I played with couldbarely manage eigth notes.
I miss this piece. A lot. We played it two months ago in my school, pretty well. And then we had to turn in our music. I miss this piece so much. It forced me to spend long hours practicing the flute to get better. And it worked a little.
played clarinet with this piece for one of my concerts this year..it was awesome. I absolutely love how "meaty" the clarinet parts are..it blows my mind.
yeahh!! i was in the percussion section for this piece on tamborine. i love it!!! hahaa but at the festival i came in a 2 measures late!!! AHHH i dont know why either i counted it and then just like looked at my notes fly by.. :(
Chance was born in Beaumont, TX.in 1932. He studied composition with Clifton Williams at the University of Texas, and betwen1960 and 1962, he was composer-in-residence at Greensboro North Carolina High School as part of the Ford Foundation Young Composers Project. He became an arranger for the 4th and 8th U.S. Army bands. Later,Chance taught at the University of Kentucky . In August 1972, he was accidentally electrocuted when a metal pole he held contacted an electrified fence .
Love this piece. It quite difficult to play but once everything gets going its frickin awesome!!!!! I play trombone 2. The counting is kinda hard sometimes. Percussion has REALLY good parts too!
this was a pretty challenging piece to put together with the whole band, but it was a lot of fun. Last year in my school's Wind Ensemble we played this and Armenian Dances in the same semester :O it was insane but really a blast.
omg...im a freshie n we're playings this song for symphonic! ^.^ its so epic!!! but very challenging :3 especially trying to get my slide positions in the most accurate place xP
yes! the horn, trombone and euphonium quarter notes at 2:30 were awesome! could b a little louder but def were louder than most interpretations, i just love the sound of a true trombone/horn duet! its so mystifying
Nicest recording of this. Played it when I was a freshman in high school - in 1975. If it's not crisp and tight, it sounds like garbage; if it's tight, in tune, and together, it's one of the best pieces ever. Sort of reminds me of "Star Wars" of Williams meets "Mars" of Holst meets "Bolero" of Ravel.
I remember playing this in my high school band back in the early 1990's. Can't quite remember which year it was, but I do remember that this is one of my most favorite pieces of music I've ever had the honor of playing.
@leftforthelions it is not easy. I play it now with my orchestra. It is very hard to play to it together and play the long turns molto expressivo. It is also hard to have enough breath for some parts.
@leftforthelions Oh, It seems, I found the world best musician on youtube. Im´m very happy, that you answer me^^
To play this song good, is not the problem, but it is difficult, to play it perfect with the complete orchestra, I think. But if your orchestra play this song very good and you are not an amateur like me(I play only since 12 years and in 4 orchestras, also as helping out musicians), I want to hear your live recording
@schnellerHeller86 Don't get snippy with me. Personally this is a very easy song. The rest of my band is having trouble. The only time I had a hard time reading this piece was when I only had the treble clef part for baritone, which I don't read. I'm not the best musician, and I know that. My prior comment to our discussion sounded very ignorant, and I apologize.
@schnellerHeller86 Therefore I erased it. I think that maybe I was in a bad mood because the trumpets, and woodwinds in our band kept getting yelled at that day. I'm sincerely apologetic. I'm sorry if I aggravated you.
@leftforthelions ok, thanks. Tomorrow we play it in our second concert, I hope, it will be a sucess. If you are interested, I can post it for you, maybe on facebook. Greetz from Dresden
Ahhh the clarinets! So nice! When I was in tenth grade, I played first associate clarinet, and my friend, who was principal clarinet, said, "hey, take the solo with the bass clarinet at the concert," which may I add was the next day. So I played it of course. It was nervewracking, but so much fun. If you have ever played this piece, or will be in the future, let me tell you now that it is a blast! have fun and enjoy the music!
Great recording. I think more emphasis could be put the brass chords @ 6:48. They kind of come off a little wimpy, especially in comparison to the rest of the piece
THIS SONG IS SO HARD ...........and we failed....epically
