  • LOL!

  • Quantic sent me.

  • Oh, this brings back memories! And I still love Fig Newtons! ;-)

  • Why is his face so... shiny?

  • What happened to rhe amped up version with a bigger band and background singers- he was popping out of a giant fig newton box!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • too funny!

  • oh my god that was frikin hilarious!!!

  • This is what I grew up watching. It explains a LOT.

  • I used to love this commercial. There were two different ones with different lyrics. Strangely I can recall the words from both but not my mom's birth date.

  • have not seen this since i was a kid. i look at it now and laugh my ass off !!

  • someone posted Bert doing the pigeon and I thought of the Big Fig - Gee Youtube is great!

  • The nutter butter man is gay.

  • Dose look reaal good

  • Sweet Christ.

If child molestation had a face...

  • @Apollomasque - It was just a silly ad. How one gets "child molestation" from it is a mystery!

  • @TkMeBk

Just commenting on how creepy it is.

I'm pretty sure that this dance started as a field sobriety test, then it went someplace...dark.

  • it was a dance craze at my dads school.......

  • I can't be the only one that noticed he tripped at :01 but recovered nicely.

  • @xThatFrenchGuyx Good eyes! How did I not see that? Must be the suit he's wearing.

  • FIIGG NEEWWWTON!

  • I remember this from first run. This was actually an attempt to start a dance craze as part of a marketing campaign. Didn't work, but I think the fig married Michelle Bachmann.

  • see he's big, and he's a fig newton.

  • haha, thanks for posting. i was talking to someone today and they had no idea what i meant.

  • umm....... no wonder it was banned

  • Mona Simpson took me here

  • Great commercial, tkaes me back to my childhood.

  • I recall this commercial.

Who in hell is playing the snack? Johnathan Winters?

    Great video anyway.

  • Anyone seen the Simpsons episode where Mona sings this to Homer as a kid?

  • This commerical was on when my husband was a little boy, the fig newton guy sacred the crap out of him...My Mother-in-law said when this came on the tv he would hide until it was over...P.S. my hubby still HATES fig newtons LOL!

  • It's still better than the Macarena.

  • My grandma passed away tuesday, and for years she would tell us grandkids of when my mom used to try to get out of trouble doing this dance. It would crack her up everytime my mom did *the tricky part*... ahh grandma I love you, and I will miss you more than you'll ever know.

  • I TOTALLY forgot about this commercial. Thanks for posting this :)

  • my vote for the most inane, impossible to watch bit of tv in human heestwa.

  • I had to make a commercial for music class in 8 grade.

I WAS the Big Fig Newton. Made a pretty good outfit. Got an A+ on the project. And since it eas in October also used the putfit for Halloween!

  • OMG i remember this commercial when I was a kid!.....Too Cool.

  • hit it hal!

  • I still hate Fig Newtons...

  • Hey CR and HG, do you remember when I sang this for you? And did "the tricky part"? You see - I'm not the crazy person you am I think.

  • I used to sing this to my daughters. And try to "dance" it ("here's the tricky part..."). Now, I can post it to show them their Ole Pappy wasn't that crazy.

  • ridiculos....but funny.....no.....HILARIOUS!

  • cool beans

  • "Hi, Gang!"

It's as good as I remembered! I spent years describing the circular platforms, the spotlights with tiny sparkles, and, of course, the costume. Does anyone else notice that he almost stumbles getting onto the platform? He starts with his left foot and switches to his right as if it really were unrehearsed. Priceless! With all the retro soda packaging I can't believe Nabisco wouldn't bring this classic back and make a whole new generation of fans. (No production costs either!)

  • This is the short version, the long version had the Phrase. "Left, right, take a bite"

  • That man in the fig costume is the late, great Jim Harder with whom I had the pleasure of working.

  • After the filming, all the stage hands rushed the stage, tipped over the guy in the fig costume and took bets over how long it would take him to get back up.

  • I had my first taste of fig newton a few days ago, its not that yummy at first, but then you realy start to like it!! :D

  • @KittyKazooTV Amazon has it for $24.78.

  • Now I am hungry.

    RetroVintageItems27

  • Oh goodness Mr fig is a cannibal

  • HAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAa!!!!

  • My friend and I LOVED this commercial when we were kids !

  • my teacher told us about this commercial. it's so old!

  • I remember this commercial from my youth. I loved it!

  • How can you not watch this more than twice?? XDDDD

  • wow...this is really weird. the only reason i found it is because of my math teacher and i regret looking it up 'cuz of how odd this is...

  • @jrocknpoppingirl Oh come on, don't you love it? I wish I had your math teacher. Mine was mean.

  • i like turtles

  • GREAT COMMERCIAL!! AND THE THREE PEOPLE WHO DISLIKED IT ARE D-BAGS WHO WOULDN'T KNOW A FUN SONG IF IT BIT THEM IN THE ASS!!

  • Hit it Hal!

  • This is great! I used to do this dance whenever the commercial came on.

  • Fig Newtons have no flavor anymore--they're bland as Hell compared to what I remember them tasting like.

  • Yup, that removed my soul.

  • This is one of those cultural keystones that marked a very particular point in one's life. I think someone wrote in this thread that this aired in 1973, the year after I fractured my hip and had operations to implant/remove stainless steel pins. It was also the year we moved to Clearwater, FLA from Louisville, KY. I STILL sing the jingle whenever I buy a package of these for my son and me.

  • Man, I just relived my elementary school days in the last 30 seconds, lol. Great stuff. Thanks for posting.

  • James "Big Fig" Harder (1931–2009) R.I.P

  • @HammerJackson : RIP...

  • wow, never thought I'd see that one again. He kind of looks like an onion though

  • "heres the tricky part" hahahahhaha OMIGOSH!! i am on the floor laughing

  • @bravery562 No doubt! Awesome choreography!

  • @VeritasAmore Of Course!!!!!!!! Incredibly creative!!!!!!! :)

  • "From Nabisco, *ding*!!" Remember when they tacked that on at the end of the commercial in later airings?

  • Awesome! Brings back memories!

  • 1973 with actor Jimmy Harder as Big Fig. Oh yes, I remember this one well!

  • So sad. Whatever happened to all the dancing gay figs in today's world?

  • @CornCrevice Probably GOP congressmen or their pages, if history is any indication. Jk

  • Gotta luv that Big Fig Newton! In my partyin' days it was not uncommon for me to break out in the middle of a party and terrorize my friends with my version of this song! I've never been able to get this jingle out of my head. Party on, Big Fig!

  • @rocknjerr Love your comment. I was the big fig for Halloween many years ago(1977) and stopped a whole bowling alley by doing the Big Fig Dance.

  • That was horrifying.

  • my favorite commercial of all time!

  • everybody here PLEASE participate with me on this. I have NO life, my life has taken a vacation when I was a small child and it has never returned :( I look at this abandonment and see the glass half full tho. So I come here on youtube, this time searching "fig newtons.. cuz i just ate some:) delicious, and I write, usually pointless comments, but no- this time I write a comment of meaning, a comment of significance. Im going thru tons of vids on youtube raising the question "Pacino or Cosby?"

  • Who's going to die first? Place your bets. Bill Cosby or Al Pacino... I mean, come on they're old as hell.

  • Great to see this again. This one really goes back!

  • Well, my dad started singing this and I thought its was and now im singing it. :P catchy song tho....

  • I am eating fig newtons right now, lol. This commercial reminds me of growing up and singing this little song, funny.

  • I've never tasted fig newton, but I already love it :3

  • this is hilarious!!!!! my sister would run to the tv when this commercial would come on, and do the fig newton dance! we nicknamed her "Figgy", and it has stuck even to this day, and i am so glad i have found this. brings back happy memories!

  • What's so tricky about it?? :S Lol my comment from yesterday under this comment. :b

I just never get tired of this song and video XD

  • Hahahaha!! He's a really good actor, but dude, I just have one question for Big Fig; "How much are they paying you??"

  • ok now I am laughing my butt off. I will be singing this all day. hahah

  • This is SO great. Man weren't those commercials from the 60's and 70's the best?!

  • o-m-g. I can't believe I remember all the lyrics to that commerical.

  • It's just a cookie..

  • @brianisbs Lol

  • I am still called big fig from many of my friends. I would love to meet The actor James Hardy. I have performed The Newton on many occasions. Does anyone know who wrote the spot? Super Advertising Genius!

  • i'm 13.

one day, my mother walks into the room and starts singing that.....

    mom: the big fig newtoon....

    me: ...what?

mom: haha it was a commercial from the 70's.

me: ... oh.... now im gonna have to find it on youtube... haha

  • Does anyone remember the other "Big Fig" cpmercial where he actually goes to a disco?

  • wows :O

  • That......was........disturbing.......

  • It's embarrassing to say, but in 1970 I had both the song and dance memorized. I was 10.

  • @nilakantha108 I never thought of doing the dance, but I got several of my friend singing the song. I was 10 years old in 1970 too! :-D

  • Oo-ee, gooey, rich and chewy inside.

    Golden, flaky, tender cakey outside.

Wrap the inside in the outside.

    Is it good?

Darn Tootin' Doin' the Big FIG NEWTON, Here's the tricky part. the Big FIG NEWTON

One more time!! the Big FIG NEWTOOOON!!!

  • The actor is James Hardy ... I'm wondering if he's still alive, He was also one of the Pligrim spirits on the Butterball Turkey comercials in the 80's. i don't think he's even listed on IMDB

  • This is a Classic I love Fig Newtons!!!!!!

  • ("Here's the tricky part!") I love all these 70s and 80s commercials on YouTube. They remind me of the good old days when my biggest worry was if we'd have enough junk food at my slumber party.

  • lol!! great tv ad, it was on Bewitched!

  • I remember seeing this commercial

    many years ago.

    Yup' I'm that old!

Thanks for the share and the memories.

    Nothin' but thumbs!

  • Thanks for posting

  • 1970

  • Hit it Hal.

  • @buzzlewie thumbs up to you sir! :D

  • I wish this is all I had to do for my Bar Mitzvah. It sure would have been a lot easier to learn. The trouble is all I would have gotten for gifts would have been Fig Newtons !

  • @elc1960 He probably made more $ for his 30 seconds of work than you'll make all yr.

  • @WaldoBlvd Probably, if he had a residuals deal - otherwise probably no more than union scale for 1970s ($4000 or $5000 maybe). I was only joking anyway; no need to get snippy.

  • LOVE THIS!!! Thank you so much for posting it. Surely one of the most unforgettable commercials ever. My son at age ~12 used to do a mean Big Fig Newton.

  • Classic commercial.

  • I remember this from 70's & always thought the man in the costume was a famous comedian like Jonathan Winters. He kind of sounds like Mel Brooks, too.

  • Oh wow I wasn't expecting this one. Many many years. It still rocks.

  • LOL x1000!!! I loved this commercial and still do. Funny enough, i was reminded of this spot when my wife and I were at the beach observing some folk in their beachwear.... Just because they make it, doesn't mean you have to buy it. Anyhoo, great post- thanks.

  • Thanks for posting this. I haven't seen it in years. My brother and I used to laugh our heads off at, "Here's the tricky part'.

  • @ilovemartinmilner OMG, it still makes me laugh, probably even more than when it was new!

  • They sure don't make em like they used to. :P

  • i luv 1977 commercials

  • Hurray! Been looking for this for a long time!

  • My mom saw this as a kid and she thinks it's the funniest thing ever

  • Classic commercial.

  • I used to like this commercial. Wasn't it around 1970?

  • @darlie48

    Yes it was!

  • do they still sell them

i havent seen them around at all! god!!!!i want one so badly rite now

  • @cheesecake4111 eating one right now =)

  • I can remember being on the playground and doing the moves and singing the jingle. "Here's the tricky part..." Love it.

  • did you really roll on the floor? hehe this is great

  • YES!!! I've been wanting to show my 6 yr old the 'real' fig newton dance. Mine is a poor representation. (I did remember the trick part, though!!)

  • omg rofl lol rofl rofl x1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

  • I'm 42 and have been humming this tune for 35 years. So glad to see it again!!

  • looks like Bobby Moynihan

  • I'm going out and getting some right now!!

  • what a great commercial, sure beats all the stupid shit on tv today

  • havent had a fig newton in years. if they still exist ima gonna get me a package and share with me girls.

  • I SWEAR I haven't seen this since I was in third grade in 1974. OMG. I thought this commercial would never see the light of day again lol. Classic.

  • This song got me a security escort out of a library once. What you do for a laugh when you're young. LOL!

  • Singing this song ANYWHERE will get you quickly escorted off the premises.

I learned that while playing my favorite game "Piss of the mall cop"

  • LOL! I could imagine. Hmmm I wonder what would happen if I broke out with this song at my job. LOL! Screw the rent I'm doing it! LOL!

  • @jsilence418 LOL!

  • Good god, I'm all for debasing myself for money but there's still a limit.

This looks less like a commercial and more like a sobriety test that's gotten completely out of hand.

  • @Apollomasque "This looks less like a commercial and more like a sobriety test that's gotten completely out of hand."

That was a classic line! You had me laughing hard for a good 15 seconds. Many, many thanks!

  • my favorite commercial, this crap is classic. My other favorite is ETrade, money out the wazoo.

  • My wife and I just sang this and the Almond Joy/Mounds commercial to our teenaged sons. The eye rolls were impressive.

  • This girl and I started singing this at the beach last summer. Our friends simply looked at us and said nothing.

  • I just realised this was the song that Homer's home sang to him to get him to go to sleep !!!

  • used to love this commercial--my granny used to dance to this and the chick-lets commerciaql

  • When I was a kid in the 70's I used to sing and dance this. and it would crack my sister up.

  • This is still better than 'Mama Mia.'

  • Pure class. THIS is what entertainment is all about. Still memorable. Still silly and funny and kids would still like it.

    Excellent!

    Hit Hal!

  • Loved It, Loved It, Loved It... this is back where they actually gave thought to a jingle to help us remember their product. Now, they would have to resort to skinny half naked people telling us how sexy Fig Newtons are.

They should stick to what this video was. I haven't seen it in years but I could still sing along the first time I clicked on it today. I never forgot it, unlike today's garbage which is VERY forgetful!

  • There was a second "Fig Newton"tv plug with"Big Fig"..

when he was trapped in a barrel of Figs. He called for help..some kids came to help him..they

asked him"Why did you say Fire Fire?" and he said"Would

have come if I said Newton Newton?"

  • Funny, funny!

  • LOL

  • this commercial made me the idiot that ive become abar owning motocycle riding mus.ician fool come to dodge street in salem ma and see what i mean...

  • When I met the actor..who played"Big Fig"..I was unware

that Nabisco had stopped doing their tv plugs with this

gentleman. I asked him"Will you be doing any more commercials

as Big Fig Sir?" and he asked"Well? You can tell the

people at Nabisco that I'm still available son..but..

no..they don't want to use me anymore."

  • I've met this actor playing"Big Fig Newton"..I don't

remember his real name..but he was very nice to me.

  • @143AC Jim Harder, Sadly he passed away in 2009. RIP

  • It's not sad at all...quality.

  • HA...it's kind of sad, but I never get sick of this commercial. I never noticed the backing vocals before. Great!

  • Mmmmm. Hit it Hal!

  • and the backing vocals..

    "bah..bah..bah...ooey..gooey"
