The poster doesn't know what this video really shows, I have the originals. I have this same race from several perspectives. It was a prototype GNx vs a Calloway Twin Turbo Corvette shot around November 1986 at Milan Dragway in Milan Michigan. You can barely see the twin air induction scoops on the Corvette's hood. I have a rear shot of this GNx heating up the meats and it has a Michigan Manufacturer (M Plate) on it designating it was owned by McLaren.
good/cool cars die all the time. This car, the new G8 GXP (until pontiac died) toyota supras? pontiac fieros? nissan 300z? the list goes on and on, the bottom line is that the average consumer doesnt need these cars. but i think they should bring back the GNX buick has the potential now.
That vid was terrible quality, I could not tell what year the 'Vette was. And if the 'Vette was manual who knows how good the driver is. I've beaten an '09 'Vette in my '01 because he didn't shift gears as well- so don't put too much stock in this stuff.
The reason the grand national was discontinued is because it was faster then the same year vette. It looks like a c4 vette to me so this is definitely possible.
this is the same damn video on another posting lol. on the other one this clown says thats a Callaway corvette and on here he says its an 87 stock vet. its a stock 84 vet with crossfire injection for christ sake. I love the GNX but this dude is a poser.
dont be an asshole...one can purchase a gn for 7-8k, drop in a stage 2 ,274cube twin turbo for 20k....and have over 900 ft/lbs of torque and 850 hp...results eights at 140+....as for your 09 zr1, my little 383 will run 132 in the quarter and run side by side if not PULLING your zr-1 all the way to 180mph...dont believe me...wanna run for pink slips???
I'm not an Ass hole,"Why do you have to modify your car just to have a chance.Stock vs Stock then we can modify and I will be ahead of you still ,with out a doubt HOLDING YOUR PINK SLIP..You just lost Twice.Money TAlKS....You know the Rest.........
I do agree, but Why do every GN owner or GNX thinks they have the fastest Quarter mile ever made from past, present & future.A GNX owner said his car would beat an Ultimate Aero in a Quarter mile...stock trim.
stock trim of course it wouldn't......however, i do know for a fact that it doesn't take much money at all to make gn's run 11's......i heard it's been done for less than 2k (i have articles to prove it, its on gmhightechperformance)......gn's have also ran in 6's
No competition. lol Juss imagine if the GNX was built with the Corvette's suspension, allowing it to handle like a C4 Vette. That woulda been the Corvette being neutered for real though hahahaha
It ran 0-60 in 4.7 s and 1/4 mile at 13.2 at 104 MPH The injection system would shut off at 124 MPH when allowed to fully run the engine could pull 163 MPH when a slightly different version of the engine was placed in the 1989 Trans Am Turbo pace car.
This video is from Popular Machanics Magazine back in 1987. It is a 1987 Buick GNX NOT a Grand National. And it is 1987 Corvette Callaway Twin Turbo NOT a corvette. And yes, the GNX hands the ass of the Corvette. GNX's produced 328 HP at the rear wheel according Car and Driver 1989 at 4400 RPM. It produced 420 ft/lb of tourque at 2400 RPM.
My life will probably end 2 weeks after I get one of these & decide to whip up the horses a little. The cops will shoot me when they can't pull me over!! :-)
Cops dont bother to chase you when they see you in a GN, I speak from personal experience. They give up after a couple of exits, because they will never catch you! LOL:)
Cops don't bother to chase you in a 95 LeSabre either. I was doing 93 mph in Indiana awhile back and a cop just waved at me. :-P & no, I'm not a 100 year old granny, im a factory worker 1/4th that old. Must be the granny sunglasses I borrowed off my ma LOL My girlfriend was freaking out, she thought i was going to get arrested.
you're absolutely right. Corvette owners were pissed when they would get they're asses handed to them by a luxo touring car. they bitched to GM and that helped put an end to the Grand National. It also sparked the Cyclone and Typhoon vehicles so GMC could have their little romp with a turbo.
Yes, you do know your history. The Corvette was the main reason why the GN was laid to rest in 1987. I had two '87 GNs. One was a race/show car and the other was a daily driver. I can't tell you how many Mustangs, Camaros and Vettes I spanked the crap out of during those wonderful times.
Official reasoning for the GNX was the platform was switching to FWD so the buick engineers decied to give the car a proper sendoff: more of everything! More power, more torque, more bad-ass attitude! GM corporate got kinda pissed when it did this and that's why the reatta was so weak, they didn't want a repeat. That's also why buick wasn't allowed a rwd chassis for a while except for the roadmaster. But I think with the ZR-1 the chance for a modern GN is there, CAFE laws will kill it now.
This is true but added pressure from Vette owners didn't help. Also Buick got wind that GM was going to end the car so they tweaked it just a bit more than they were supposed to in 87, just to make sure no one forgot the GN. it worked.
That's because that is one of a couple of videos that were 'leaked' during GM's testing of the then-concept 1987 GNX. The audio wasn't that great in the original either.

Another reason gm was bankrupt. Killed good cars instead of promoting them. I think there was room for the vette and the gnx. but alas.

no stock corvette, a v8TT would not lose to a 231 V^ turbo. but the GNX is still a bad ass car and is a sleeper!
