believe me, whatever you do, DON'T install it. I took of XP and installed Linux and I find it horrible. It's just different and I couldn't get my Microsoft software to all work. My office documents wouldn't open. I immediatly switched back to Windows. I will never use Linux again until they get it in order.
... well obviously none if to worked. It's a different operating system. Unless it's made for Linux or platform independant(or if Wine runs it), then you really can't run any windows programs on it. That's not a problem with it "not being in order", it's just a different operating system, like on Macs. It does have a dual booting feature so you can put both it and Windows on the computer.

yeah well I'm a windows user and I hate macs. While we are on the subject, let me just say I wish office COULDN'T run with macs and Microsoft would stop making an Office for mac. Macs are worthless overpriced pieces of crap.
thanks for the comment. ubuntu is slow if you have a PC with a processor no core2duo and 512Vram. But, you can download a old version of ubuntu if your PC is not very good.
NOT EVEN! I am using my old computer (P4 2.6Ghz) with 1GB Ram and a Geforce 4 series and it's going smooth. Boot times are FAST! faster than on XP. Ubuntu is very nice and understandable. If you people decide to get Ubuntu, please PM me I know a few tricks so far. Make sure you have either WINE or CrossOver if you want to install programs for windows to work on unbunu.
about 26 seconds for the login screen to pop up and about an extra 12 seconds to load the GNOME DE after logging in.. makes about 38 seconds until everything is loaded and the desktop is ready to go. That's pretty good, but considering your hardware it's not that surprising.

Hey ubuntu is a very nice OS, but as for speed i prefer AmigaOS 4 . For risk power PC machines check the boot for an basic os startup.

I'm getting about the same boot time as you with a P4 2.4GHTS, 1.5GB of ram.
So I'm assuming this boot is 100% harddrive.
