Wow! a new discovery pour moi! if only such treasures in the musical archives were more widely known, however, here we all are enjoying this performance. Many thanks to all responsible.
Christian Ferras always was one of my favourite violinists, as for his Sibelius (and the Brahms): I believe he set the standard!! But I like the Kavakos very much too.
I don't believe the conductor is fake: he's (a young) Zubin Metha, isn't he?
I only know the Chung and Viktoria Mullova performances of the Sibelius, and this is by far the best I've heard. I love the way he plays the cadenza, not one iota of tension is lost. My chief criticism of Ferras here is his portamento, which I felt was sometimes just tasteless. Also, I felt sometimes his playing at times lacks a certain delicacy - the end of the candenza with the ascending scale in broken octaves I felt was rather aggressive.
wow you people certainly know alot more about classical music than I do. But despite my ignorance i enjoyed this performance very much. Thanx for posting it!
Ferras moves me most as a musician. He was an incredible violinist. This is an amazing performance.Terrible his life became so tragic. Unbelievable talent.
Too intense, especially the beginning with the heavy vibrato. Also, the shifts were just too intense for that piece (and I think, any other piece. A shift can be very slidy but done in good taste like Kreisler, but not like Ferras). I also found they were placed in untasteful places.
I agree with the vibrato part. So far of all the recording's I've heard Heifetz is my favorite. Hah, well maybe the vibrato can represent the shivering cold of the Finnish winter
Although the Heifetz recording of this peice will always be my favorite, I must say that Ferras plays with such beauty and emotional intensity that I can't help but love his playing. The more I listen to him the more I want to play like him.
i wouldnt call this recording THE best one. the I prefer the Gil Shaham over this one. it is in better quality (because he is more recent) and i just like his style over Ferras. also, i have the david oistrakh recording of this concerto, and it is incredible. his intonation and musicality and just awesome. although oistrakh plays a bit softly in the recording, and i believe he could stand out a bit more because sometimes the orchestra overpowers his sound, but i still highly recommend it.
I agree, and it may be to bring the solo part out above the background (which in a standard orchestra is largely strings, after all). But my ear is not so sharp...
Paganini was known to hand out orchestra parts that were pitched higher than the key he actually played in, so that he would tune his instrument higher, increasing the tension on the strings and making it sound more brilliant than the orchestra violins (maybe not relevent, but..),
Sometimes violin soloists sound sharp to me, too (but my ear is not that accurate). Paganini would tune his instrument sharp to make the sound more brilliant, then play in a lower key to match the orchestral accompaniment, thus standing out from the other violinists...don't know if that is relevent...
just incredible

Ferras's intonation sucks. He's pretty a quarter tone sharp the whole.

The video's intonation is off, but his playing is in tune

his elbow is so high.. it's hard to have the proper weight that way.. but he seems to pull the sound out just fine

quite quite excellent, except for some intonation in the first "cadenza" part. i think he gives the Oistrakh recording a run for its money

oistrakh is still better...
