  • this is kool! i hadnt thought of using a shower curtain! so helpful!

  • I know a lot of what he's talking about, but it is one heck of a good feature for those that don't.

  • woww!! thanks man!! (: you are awesome!!

  • thanks a lot, very cool a helpfully, greetings from germany , berlin

  • Just the video I was looking for! I've gotta try this. Chris: I'm sure if it were anything other than a translucent shower curtain he would have said so.

  • wow, could you stand in front and use that as an infinite white background? Obviously with lighting in the foreground.....

  • excellent info thankyou!

  • Ah Ha! Shower curtain FTW. I was racking my brain trying to find a fabric or something to create a large softbox. I was even thinking parchment paper taped together but shower curtain rules.

  • Nice Job.

  • woooww, thanks a bunch!

  • Chris Rock's long lost British brother. Its all in the hands!

  • Excellent my friend. Good job.

Nobudgetkalie has a good point. Will 250/500 a work lamp and/ fluorescent bulbs mess up your color? Or does a custom white balance take care of it?

  • Great video, many excellent points!

  • I got to at least hand it to this guy for "Studying" the light quality and how it works and how it is achieved and changed. Light distance to diffuser panel and light panel size and closeness to subject all which have huge effects on the light quality or softness. Now will I go out and make my own softbox no but I have to at least hand it to this guy studying it..

  • great vid man

  • Hello,

good idea, but wouldn´t You get some trouble with the color-temprature of the work-light? I mean, especially in case, when You mix it up with fluorescent bulbs w. 5500K, ore so. The wl´s have about 4000(?) K. But, I will definately check out Your setup ;-).

  • @nobudgetkalle Rosco has color balancing gels for that if you use mixed light. Just need to know which ones to use....

  • def. feels like i'm in class....even jotted down some notes! lol great explanation of the softbox look my dude. cheap and efficient.....two of my fav. words, along with "free." good job bruh.....

  • Awesome video man! Thanks for the info!

  • Awesome! Thanks. I have a portable clothing rack - will try hanging the shower curtain on this.

  • great video. love 1:55 haha

  • can u use any plain white shower curtains or TRANSLUCENT SHOWER CURTAIN ? because it hard to find here in the uk

    thanks!!

  • what camcorder are u using?

  • 9ce 1 bro*******************

  • i what bulb did u use? tungsten or fluorescent ?

  • not much to say other than thank you soooooooooo much.

  • Thanks for sharing!!

  • you have king midas' hands in the beginning of this video...

  • Great! Thanks

  • Great informative video, but it could have been done in less time ;)

  • You are Little jesus , thanks ...

  • Great video, Nick. So helpful. I never thought of using a plastic shower curtain. From what I see in your video, the plastic a bit more opaque than fabric, so it seems to diffuse better. Thanks for taking the time.

  • And how about using a steel kitchen mesh strainer? I have a 2x500W lamp, I don't want the diffuser to burn, that's why I was thinking about steel strainer?

  • I did IT.. I DID IT!!!!!!

    THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I did it with a construction Light wood and screws and duck tape!!!! and a shower curtain!! My Budget was$10.00 for my soft light...

BIG UP!!.... BIG UPS....... TO YOU!!! BIG UPS!!!

  • bloody brilliant!!!!!!

  • Thanks so much for putting in the time and effort to share your knowledge with the rest of us working on smaller budgets!

  • As the light passes through the curtain does it gain in kelvin value? So I wouldn't have to clip a correction gel over the light? What if the shower curtain was a white color instead of translucent? Would that increase the kelvin value more so than the translucent material? What's the minimum distance you can place the shower curtain away from the work light without the curtain becoming a fire hazard/pile of melted plastic?

  • Is this a vid on DIY/how to or is it a discussion of soft boxes in general? GET TO THE POINT. You gotta be kidding me.

  • that makes a lot of sense my friend....thanks for posting

  • thank you I really enjoyed

  • Wonderful idea! Thanks for sharing. :))

  • Brilliant!

  • you are fuckin awesome ...excuse my french man

  • Very good explanation with lots of references to real world situations that this will work with. The huge shower curtain idea is awesome! Thanks so much for your efforts.

  • GREAT JOB! I DO A LOT OF VIDEOS WHERE THE SHADOWS KEEP GETTING IN THE WAY. INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS NEED A LOT OF SOFT LIGHT.

THANKS FOR THE ENLIGHTENMENT OF SOFT LIGHT AND THE INNOVATIVE WAY TO GET IT CHEAP.

    MUDDy

  • you save my day!!!

  • excellent! thanks!

  • I really enjoyed your video! I think you did a great job explaining the types of material used, especially the fact that a "heat-proof" material would be ideal. Thanks, I'm definitely going to watch part 2.

    Thanks again!

  • you are a gem my friend. so glad you made this video to help other people as well as myself. thank you so much.

  • You explained that perfectly! Thats not something you find on youtube everyday. 5*****'s

  • Thanks for the video! Very informative!

  • great vid, very helpful! thanks!

  • Does a white shower curtain really give the same effect?

  • How do you change the exposure on your work lamp?

  • @fuckinwok

I believe he was increasing his exposure compensation on his video camera a stop or two.

  • YES @fuckinwok it does a soft box has more control (light spill) at the backend but it will work fine!

  • Great Video. I like that you spend so much time actually showing the effects/results. It is soft and with a soft fill it could certainly be used in a professional setup. I'm leaving to pick up a white shower curtain right now! Thanks.

  • I love these sort of tutorials. Thanks.

  • Thanks
