What a lot of people don't realize is that before the Civil War, there was already a very sharp, geographically defined divide between the north and the south. And what's more, blood shed started 6 years before the Civil War even happened (Bleeding Kansas anyone?)
I'm not saying there could never be another civil war in the United States (although I put it at about a 0.5% chance if I'm generous), but if there is a civil war, it's going to take a couple decades to build momentum before hand.

I know this is an old post, but now the Iraq war is officially over, the FEMA camps have been activated, and Obama is to sign that bill for the detainment of American citizens (I guess if he can declare America a battlefield). I can tell you regardless of our perspectives on how the country should be run we all basically want the same thing; peace and prosperity and freedom, we just disagree on how to get it. I'm more than willing to do the jobs that the Taiwanese are doing as long as I don't lose 45% of my income to illegitimate taxes. Horrible taxation policy is the most influential issue which has forced companies to move labor and talent abroad. Correct the problems in regulation and we'll correct the economy.
@chemicalsweet13 Look at progressive taxation as a tax cut: Cutting taxes for the largest part of the economy (Working poor) by placing the burden on those who have most benefited from civilized society. We improve our infrastructure, increase college attendance through grants, and provide for the security of those who do business. Small business owners pay less taxes, I pay less taxes, Gates, Johnson&Johnson, Murdoch bear the burden. No one ever gives up power (GOVT) once they have it.

Socialism is a planned economy based on equal shares where the means&modes of production&distribution are collectively shared by citizens. Incentive to work doesn't exist, so socialism fails. By it's definition wealth cannot exist in a true socialist economy; hence progressive taxation doesn't exist. There are no wealthy people to tax. Socialism happens when you let wealthy people continue to reign unfettered by taxation.

OK, the first thing I want to say is that the war of 1861-1865 was NOT a civil war. A civil war is TWO seperate factions fighting for control of ONE governmental body. What happened during the mid-nineteenth century in this country was that the southern states grew tired of the Federal Government dictating matters which fell under the individual state's rights as sovereign entities.
When redress of these grievances failed, they were left with the only remaining option which was secession. This prompted an INVASION by the United States government into the lands of the newly formed Confederate States for the purpose of reclaiming territory.
As the people of the U.S. began to realize this, support for the conflict began to diminish. In an attempt to regain support, the emphasis of the conflict was shifted to slavery. This is evidenced by the fact that the war began in 1861, yet the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't drafted until 1863. Add to this that slavery wasn't limited to the south. In the state of Massachusetts, slaves could be legally held up to either 1878 or 1879.
The victors of war write the history of it. So the history was written in a way as to depict the South as an evil, stupid, barbaric entity which had to be crushed. They realized that teaching this history to subsequent generations would create divisional lines between North/South and Black/White, causing us to distrust and watch each other while we should have been distrusting and watching the governmaent itself.

What a lot of people don't realize is that before the Civil War, there was already a very sharp, geographically defined divide between the north and the south. And what's more, blood shed started 6 years before the Civil War even happened (Bleeding Kansas anyone?)
I'm not saying there could never be another civil war in the United States (although I put it at about a 0.5% chance if I'm generous), but if there is a civil war, it's going to take a couple decades to build momentum before hand.

They would of won the war much earlier if the leadership of Robert E. Lee hadn't been what it was. So I don't see a Robert E. Lee type leader joining a rebellion. Not all military personnel would turn. For the right amount of persuasion, manipulation and money a military person could be tipped to harm and kill a fellow American. There would be some who would rebel, and this is only natural. Currently, there is so much dissatisfaction with our government and internal bifurcation: culturally, spiritually, philosophically, etc...that we must split apart in order to peacefully pursue our own vision. Anyone who 'rebels' will either go straight to jail, or during war, be shot. If the right start shooting (which is actually a strong possibility) you can bet your bottom dollar they will not be backed by the govt or the army. It would be a slaughter followed by a protracted geurilla war.

We improve our infrastructure, increase college attendance through grants, and provide for the security of those who do business. Small business owners pay less taxes, I pay less taxes, Gates, Johnson&Johnson, Murdoch bear the burden. No one ever gives up power (GOVT) once they have it.

Socialism is a planned economy based on equal shares where the means&modes of production&distribution are collectively shared by citizens. Incentive to work doesn't exist, so socialism fails. Socialism happens when you let wealthy people continue to reign unfettered by taxation.

I don't think we're ripe for a civil war. There are far too many other options we can use. But I definitely think it's way past time for Americans to do something about these big corporations running/ruining our country. We messed up by allowing all the big corporations to buy up the smaller businesses & they're still doing it.

We can't get into a civil war. Our military is too powerful, and todays weapons are too powerful. Unless we want to loose 3/4 of our population, we need to wise up and pick the right presidents, congressmen, governors, and our nation will prosper. The country is being financially looted and the IMF is insisting that a police state be set up to quell any possible revolt. It may come to civil war, but it would be just like the last, very bloody. Who wants to kill our fellow citizens? Not a good solution! We can exert powerful influence by being informed and boycotting companies like Walmart etc.

If unemployment continues to rise, if we keep inflating our currency, if more & more people are on the govt dole, if the segment of poor keeps rising, if manufac jobs continue to be sent overseas, if we contin to run up the debt both federal & state, & if our govt continues to hide the truth, then what you are saying is not that far-fetched.
I'd like to remain positive, but the fundamentals in our country are not looking good, nor do I belive that they will improve any time soon.

The victors of war write the history of it. So the history was written in a way as to depict the South as an evil, stupid, barbaric entity which had to be crushed. They realized that teaching this history to subsequent generations would create divisional lines between North/South and Black/White, causing us to distrust and watch each other while we should have been distrusting and watching the governmaent itself.
