Marco Van Bastens turn and finish was brilliant, he is one of the greatest strikers ever, 1 moment of magic is the difference between a draw and a win, his goal in the final of this tournament is something special, probably the best goal... ever

This was a good match. I remember it. The Dutch should have won more down the years. World cup in 1974 and possibly 1990. European championship in 1992 and 2000.

England and the Netherlands/Holland always have a good understanding of one anothers countries and cultures. Football is something special when these 2 play eachother. I've never seen a dull game involving england and holland.

i went to the 3 england games, then the 2 semis and final. i thought these were the best 2 teams out there. england totally outplayed the irish, and more than held their own against the dutch. the russia game we didnt turn up to as nothing to play for... only the germans turned up off the pitch...

Agree, England totally outplayed Ireland yet somehow lost. And more than matched the Dutch in this game. But the difference was Englands main striker was suffering from illness, where as Hollands main man was on fire. England were only poor against Russia, where we were more or less already elminated. Totally agree with Barnes and Beardsley losing form. In fact the pair of them never really had a good game in an England shirt after this.......

It's worth remebering that England hit the post twice before the Dutch scored. Had one even gone in, the match could have been completely different. It may have had the same psychological impact as the 1st Dutch goal clearly had on England who were playing well until then. Still, Holland played a great tournament

I agree, we waltzed through the qualifiers and were among the favourites - then players like Barnes and Beardsley lost form, Lineker contracted Hepatitis B, Bobby Robson lost faith in Hoddle and it all went to pot! Just shows you can't peak too soon in football if you want to win things.

Gullit had an injury, I think van basten did too. Lots of in-fighting in the dutch squad as well.

interesting question. They had 3 draws and then they played a great game against Germany but were unlucky against the latter world champions. If it wasnt for the exlusion of Rijkaard they could have gone through. Poor performance of Van Basten and Gullit could have been reasons also..
