Get out of the way, big ugly thing! Just when the door opened for you to go through - crunchy! The Rovers had it on the straights, but the tyres and suspension are working so hard on the Rover in corners, he is missing so many apexes, you can see that it is not all about power. Good ole' Slick50's a real favourite with us marshals, and good to see Oulton in it's proper format.
Love it , brings back memories , im 26 no and this must be around the time i started going to oulton , the Bridge still up on the start line and Knickerbrooke flat before they put the chicaine in to slow every one down a but - Good times
what motor is in that capri is it 24v boa cosworth? sounds meaty surely its not a 2.8 cologne or a 3.1 essex as both would have trouble keeping with v8 sd1 i speak from experience lol
That was great racing. That's what scares me most when I'm at the track, someone crashing into me. Fair enough if it's your own fault but must be hard when it's not.
It looks like the Rover went wide, lostthe back end and headed straight across the track in front of the Capri by accident. Great video and great racing.
Second that, not anything today compares to these older racing series and cars. Wish there would be high resolution versions so I could watch these with my movie setup, would be much more fun than any F1 or today's BTCC.
Cruel though it is, this is a prime example of a 'racing accident' if I ever saw one.
Both drivers were driving well within their and their caar's limits and can you blame the Rover driver for keeping his foot in it when he slipped onto the wet stuff!

Great tussle. Love the subtle 'probing' tactic, obviously got to him eventually; just a shame it ended the way it did... Bummer.

It's a 3.1 Essex, all the SD1's were 3.9's as the capacity limit for the class was 4.0.
Yes they did have more grunt but they didn't have it all there own way, I won the championship in 1991, also taking 9 lap records off the Rover's :-)

what did you do to your essex to make it keep up with those v8s???
M374EVL 2 years ago
It couldn't match the V8's in a straight line, but then it's not all about power, the Capri was lighter and handled better on the the fast corners.
The Essex was making maybe 230bhp, which due to championship rules had to retain the original Weber 38DGAS.

Brilliant clip. Nice to see an SD1 1-2-3-4 line up on the grid too. I wonder if the SD1 was re-shelled?
