pretty sure gervais disapproves of these kind of shows, if the actual special is anything to go by: "they wheel out the bewildered to be sniggered at by multimillionaires".
Gervais' material comprises: 1) name-dropping a bland-sounding place in England that he lived/worked in, 2)having someone comment unfavourably on his weight/stature,3)joking about disability or some other taboo subject in a way that doesn't seem too offensive because he comes across as a nice enough guy, but gets laughs because it's 'so wrong,' 3) awkward smiles, laughs and gestures. I think that's about it. There you have it - the reductionist guide to Ricky Gervais!
@CecilyHeron - A comedian that covers "taboo" subjects what next? Where's all those mother in law jokes you love so much. Who needs comics satirizing things and covering taboo issues, the very nerve of the man. You should right a strongly worded letter the the Daily Mail and demand the return of Dick Emery. Not like the good old days when comics at least had the good wit to dress up as a women and put on an hilarious voice.
@WillShakespeare2007 Mr.Shakespeare,you have misunderstood me.I am not morally outraged, but bored by the one-trick duo that is Merchant and Gervais.In fact I grudgingly admire the fact that his humour is a little on the edge, it is just that I don't feel it goes beyond that.There's little point arguing about something as subjective as humour, because, well, it's subjective.I just find it strange that someone like Gervais,who's clearly intelligent and clever offers little of this in his material
anyone pissed at his ego is clearly naive, he doesn't really have a big ego, he doesn't really try to mention all of his accomplishments and DVDs and shit, try to plug them every two seconds, its part of his comedy personality. its funny.
@16nwb1 it WAS the most successful comedy of all time and in a league way above only fools and horses. Also, by most successful, he means profitable. i.e, made the most money, not whether it gets repeated. I don't see only fools and horses being sold to america. Ricky Gervais has a net worth of 80 Million Dollars and Del boy has a net worth of 1.2 million. I am not saying that one is funnier than the other, it's about what makes you laugh. But success wize, Extras is way out ahead.
oh, okay, soz :) i thought what he ment was it was most scessful by humor i did not know that only because i had never heard of it. LOL SOZ I didnt mean anything bad
@16nwb1 you've never heard of extras? I'm surprised. and you should try it because it's a brilliant series. Also, correction, he sold 'The Office' to America, which is the series I think he's talking about at that point. Extras wasn't re-made in America but was still very successful. and I didn't mean to be confrontational. I was at work 22 minutes ago and about to leave so typed quickly.
nah nah, dont worry its okay i understand :) i watched one of the clips that he did 4 the show a afterwards and i did find it a funny so yeah. but dont worry :)
@black39gold The only two that are okay is Ed Byrne and Lee Mack. Rhod Gilbert is almost good. The other three are AWFUL. Especially Michael McIntyre.
This is bloody class, all good sports for going this esp ricky, he's probably worth more than them now though, obviously at the time he was a multi millionaire anyway but now he's worth a fortune
I love Ricky's comedy acting. His little looks and movements are spot on. He's a good example of less is more which is great for the naturalistic and dry style.
@Spartz95 haha whats wrong with you but seriously its not that he has ginger hair its just the way the light is positioned in the room and the way he was sitting it just makes it appear ginger
Show's that he really is only funny writing for and starring in the office.
Even this had flashes of Brent, and still wasn't funny.
I love the office, but everything else I can find with him is really bad. I so want to like him outside of the office because that was great, but he just fails at everything else.
Merchant is exactly the same, just not funny at anything else.
@w0bbl3r What about their radio show? thats fucking hilarious. He's one of the best stand-ups around, plus extras was not only funny but brilliantly written.
@cfcolly I disagree. His standup was average, at BEST, and extras was just dull. The best thing in it was the woman who played the female lead. She was good, and made the best of a bad show.
@w0bbl3r What about the Christmas special? By far and away the best piece of comedy that year. And as for his stand-up, I don't know what to say. there are so many terrible English stand-ups out there who do well, Like Russell Howard, Peter Kay, and Michael MacIntyre who only knows how to do average observational comedy in a funny voice. As far as I'm concerned Gervais is the best comedy export we have
@cfcolly You mean the office christmas special? Yes, it was great. But it was still the office. He was fantastic, and bang on the ball with the office. But he ended it at the right time. It would have gotten tedious and repetetive (just like the US office) if it had carried on for another series or two.
And I'm not commenting on other shit stand-up comics from the UK. Yes, Brand, Kay, and many many others are awfull, no argument.
My point is that the office was the only GREAT thing he did
@w0bbl3r I agree with you, Ricky Gervais' material is all shit. I much prefer the stuff you've done and all the awards you've won are testament to your superiority over Gervais.
I'm always surprised that there's such thing as snobbery when it comes to comedy...
people seem to have a superioty complex if they find Gervais funny when people don't. "He's not funny" "That's because you're too stupid to understand this subtle humour"
Trust me, this humour isn't THAT subtle. I have aspergers. I'm in a bloody good position to know subtlety in humour. XD
But hey, Ricky is hilarious. and anyone who thinks otherwise... well.. they think otherwise.. we just cant be friends...
This litte scene was so unfunny, like all of his stuff. Why can't people see he is like the emperors new clothes......everyone is saying oooooooooh he is soooooo funny, when he isn't.

That was fucking lame.
Ricky Gervais is a crap version of David Mitchell and Robert Webbe.

@HoneyIEducatedTheWeb Ricky is in no way like mitchell and webb, i used to like both but i think mitchell n webb have gone down hill.

@LightninLew
I don't like the Mitchell and webb look.
I love the Peep Show, though.

@HoneyIEducatedTheWeb lol thats a COMPLETELY different thing XD

@bertos333
I note your sarcasm, but seriously, the two shows are very different.
That Mitchell and Webb look is a very posh, low level intelligence comedy.
The Peep Show is littered with jokes of genius and subtlety. It can never be mainstream because it is too intelligent for the masses.

@HoneyIEducatedTheWeb i wasn't being sarcastic.... i meant that you were comparing things that that a very different so your point was about as valid as a piece of dog shit on a stick. and not only did you prove my point for me, you also pointed out your stupidity. thank you and goodnight.

@bertos333
I thought you were referring to the Mitchell and Webb Look being completely different to the Peep Show, but saying it sarcastically.
To be fair, I have made several comments and mentioned several things, so identify what you're talking about next time, moron.

And I was replying to someone else who made the mistake that your comment should actually be addressed to. You really weren't joking when you said you're 16.
