  • In Windows XP the folder location is here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user.PC\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes

where "user.PC" is your Users Name.

  • The most simple way to fix the problem is... just restore your Ipod or Iphone with with computer that you never use befor for your iphone or ipod, it will sure work 100%. trust me just use any computer window, mac it does not matter

  • @ganiyu2007 No it doesn't I've just tried that. Exactly the same thing happend. The new computer has never had an ipod connected to it or itunes installed before.

  • on my 3G ipod touch, (im on windows XP) was getting 1604 error, used the jailbreak program "limera1n" pressed "make it rain" and it restored. dont know if it works for anyone else but ive been at it for days and thats the only thing that worked.

  • I wish I had that accent, lol

  • Thanks - brilliant solution, excellent, allowed me to restore an 8GB 2g ipod touch that was previously getting error codes 1604 & 1611 when attempting to restore.

The Win XP customization notes provided by bazmail really helped. Tip for navigation to the hidden areas is just to type in the path in Explorer.

For some reason (maybe I missed a step) I had to go through the process twice.

Not sure what caused the original problem - my daughter indicated it was not used it for a couple of weeks.

  • i have windows 7 and ...still i have the error

  • lol thumbs up if u tried to put another firmware on the ipod software and u were like fuk yea!! but when u checked it again itunes deleted lol

  • dude im trying to downgrade to 3.1.2 firmware but i come up with error 3194

  • @elgatocavron search for custom jailbroken ipsw firmware. i did mine on pwnagetool. then you shouldn't have that error.

  • @Acerhio find (or do yourself) a custom jailbroken ipsw firmware if you're downgrading.

  • What happens when i only have one xml file?

  • didnt work 4 me still got 1604

  • I still got the error

  • i can't find my AppData and i'm a Vista, what happens then?

  • @viola1021 go to the windows button and put appdata. you'll find it

  • If all else fails, try checking for an itunes software update since Apple is adding some fixes to the latest version; also if you are running 64bit windows vista make sure you choose the proper download

  • Thanks Toby! Mine actually got fixed after rebotting the iphone, no further steps were needed.

  • If you Got Windows 7 and you cant see 'App Data' Follow these instructions,

Go to start and where is says 'Search Programme and Files'

Type in 'Folder Options' and press enter, then in Folder Options you will see 3 tabs, General, View and Search, Click View and then you will see 'Hidden Files and Folders' and your going to check 'Show hidden Files, Folders and drives' and then press apply and now you should be able to see 'App Data'.

    Hope this helped :D

  • Alright I'm having an issue where I can't go on my ipod touch. I can't get passed the recovery mode screen. When I'm lucky, and iTunes actually reads my iPod touch, I try'd restoring and got this 1604 error. Now I deleted the files you suggested ( I have windows vista 32 bit as well ). I hit restore again and now it's having me install the latest version ( 4.0 ) iOS. Anyone know if this is supposed to happen? I'll let you know if it worked or not!

sorry i cant be of any more help

  • @kat9213 lol download tinyumbrella v4.01.01 n just kick it out of recovery mode it will work

  • THE PROBLEM IS REALLY EASY TO FIX WITH THIS METHOD, I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES WITH DIFFERENT ITOUCHES/IPHONES AND IT REALLY WORKED.....SO HERE IT GOES:

THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS PUT YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH IN DFU MODE, IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO DO IT FOLLOW THIS 4 STEPS QUICKLY:

    1. TURN YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH OFF

    2. PRESS HOME AND POWER BUTTON FOR 10 SECONDS

    3. RELEASE POWER BUTTON BUT KEEP PRESSING HOME BUTTON FOR ANOTHER 10 SECONDS

    4. RELEASE POWER BUTTON

  • NOW YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH SHOULD BE IN DFU MODE, THEN OPEN ITUNES (IF ITUNES WAS RUNNING CLOSE IT AND OPEN IT AGAIN)

AFTER THAT YOU SHOULD GET A POPOU TELLING YOU TAHT YOU HAVE TO RESTORE YOUR IPOD CLIK ON THE RESTORE BUTTON THEN WAIT FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS UNTIL YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH SCREEN TURNS WHITE, WHEN YOUR SCREEN IS WHITE CLICK CTRL+ALT+SUPR AND KILL ITUNES.EXE

  • It works u just save me $300

  • I LOVE YOU FOR THIS!

  • hey ..my ipod is giving me trouble...it jus got hung...nth worked...1st it comes as an apple logo then a white screen then nth works at all...please try helpin me out...

  • I'm about to try this. If this works, I'll fuckin love you.

  • How do you unhide appdata??? please! someone help! its not there and he said it was hidden how do i unhide it!?!?!?!

  • @maxamillion4536 if u have vista click on the start icon then in the search box type "appdata" and itll be there

  • i love u so much thanx man i was about to die

  • the way i fixed my 1604 error was by simply changing the port. who would have known it could have been so easy. you should all try it out!

  • THANK YOU SOOO MUCHH!!

  • had exact same symptoms. hope this works....

  • @digbigpig nope... it flashes white then disconnects and connects quickly... then it cant do anything

  • i dont see no App Data after i disconnect my iphone where is it?

  • wt about win 7???????????

  • Thankyou sooo much! this worked perfectly, today was the first day i got my ipod touch and i was soo pissed when it had an error, but your fix work exelent! Thanks Again.

  • This is one way to fix this. I have done this before. Another problem can be if you aren't using a 2.0 usb port.

  • I was trying to upgrade to OS3 and it failed and failed to restore. 1604 error. I tried everything and finally tried all your steps except at the end I took a chance and restored from backup. Everything worked without a hitch and even restored all my aps. Thanks a lot. It's a shame iTunes can't get it right and delete these files on its own. I am thinking twice now about switching to a MAC. They always say "It just works".

  • Works in windows XP. Paths are a little different though.

    Delete iTunesPrefs.xml in

    from C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes

Delete the big .ipsw file in

    C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

and delete the 2 xml files in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes

    Thanks mate!

  • @bazmail it did not work on mine any other solutions

  • @bazmail umm where are the "2 xml files" you mentioned on the third steps ?

i can't find it, can you give me the full name of those two files ?

    thanks
