How to build C64 paddles for cynthcart

This has 2 potentiometers.. but only one joystick cable? ..is the cynthcart software specifically written to handle this sort of hardware or does a 2-potentiometer have other uses? Does one of the pots work like a standard paddle controller?

Wires marked ground in step 4 of the instructable should actually connect to +5v, which is pin 7.
