I sang this song years ago when I had classes in Sàmi. I'm not sure if my translation is correct but here goes. Hear, hear! Girl and boy Hear the voices of the foremothers ask Why you let the earth become polluted poisoned exhausted They remind you where you come from Listen Do you hear, they want to remind you The earth is our mother If we take her life we die with her.
Observing and hearing this phenomenal singer makes me wonder about the origin of people - that once the lands were connected. Hearing and seeing her reminds me of the North American original peoples, not only the singing style but the sound and even the message is one these people also share...uncanny. Powerful!!!!
@laelamarie1 Yes a land bridge across the pole is one prevailing theory for the simularities. There are some other examples of Nordic joik singing in Värttinä's song "Miero" at

@adnansarikaya: I think this song has nothing to do with Turkish. On the CD there is a hint for Gula Gula = "Hear the Voices of the Foremothers". - ** Tiad **
@adnansarikaya This song is in Saami language. I think that "gula" probably means "listen" or "hear". Saami is a finno-ugric language, which is related to Estonian and in Estonian "kuula" means "listen" and "kuule" means "hear".
Lyrics translation: Gula Gula (Hear the Voices of the Foremothers) ** Hear the voices of the foremothers **
Hear ** They ask you why you let the earth become polluted ** Poisoned ** Exhausted ** They remind you where you come from ** Do you hear? ** Again they want to remind you ** That the earth is our mother **
If we take her life ** We die with her. *** Tiad

finnish, estonian, hungarian, and sami are uralic languages, although these languages are related they would be like distant cousins to one another(very distant!).
You know it's strange, the Saami are across an ocean but they are a LOT like Native Americans. The First Nation peoples have stories of traveling around a "great salt lake," which makes me wonder.
@Kriegsarschmann Ancient peoples traveld alot more than modern history says. Human civilization is a lot older than many think . And why are there pyramids etc. all around the ancient world .And ancient texts that depict manned flight?
@antonthegreatone Well the pyramids who knows, people like to build random things that are also huge. As for the manned flights, lots and lots of ancient drugs the likes of which we shall never see. :( Them ancients, they knew how to party.
Thank you so much for making this wonderful video. Mari Boine is pure magic! Whoever has the chance to see her live - DO IT!!!!! So tender and powerful at the same time she sings directly to the heart - the language is not all that important. Feel her music!!
She sang this song yesterday in her consert at VossaJazz (festival in Voss, Norway), and it was magic, as the whole consert was. She is getting better and better. The music is so varied, she uses her voice in so many different ways, she creates an athmosphere of strength and warmth.
so you don't think that if we take our planets life, natures life, we won't die too? read the info before you speak.. i understand what they say, they are a people in my country and all the nortern scandinavia, a nature people.. i belive in what they say more than americans..

@tiad Well, you don't have to write in finnish, for example (or whatever language), but it is possible to translate what you have written from english to finnish. Of course that's your own choice.
Thanks by the way for the translation of this fine song. :-)
@nordicpower88 it's not finnish. it's north sami. i speak finnish and don't understand a word of it. yes finnish and sami languages are related but not as close as for example swedish and norwegian.
I understand that Mari Boine sings in north Sami, but I was actually referring to the comment by pikkupukki one year ago which translates from Finnish:

Verdele de inceput care nu te lasa sa te misti altfel.
Parca si inceputul e-n nesfirsit. Parca si nesfirsitul isi cauta raspuns in definirea care numai cu radacini se maninca.
Si pasii incetinesc in toropeala ce inalta.
De ce valuri?
De ce crud care primeste roua?
De ce toate astea?
Muntele ravasirii in carnea ce nu se poate topi.
Cimpoiul aduce a toba, a chemare ce nu-si afla insulta, doar zvicnet al inaintarii.
Pasesc... Otilia
