Most of the commentators here are the old-fashioned rockers... Its a good thing what you call "mainstream rock bands" or even "pop bands" put up a remnant of the old rock... By the way, the content of their songs is good... Lyrically sound... The thing that really turns off the old rock is being a bloody rhetoric in its lyrics(though not all). Your all entitled to your opinions anyway. Rock ain't just about rebellion and its old rhetorical messages... It needs to evolve or develop...

I don't think that itunes is a really a valid way to judge what people are listening to these days, everyone I know downloads music for free. There are still plenty of good mainstream bands out there though Foo Fighters new album is good and the Black Keys are going strong too.

To begin with the bands mentioned above are not really rock. Their genre is very different from rock. It so foolish of him to compare the bands to rock, the bands have a unique style of portraying their music, all the bands mentioned are great.

The reason the music industry has fallen so hard is because of greed. Greed on behalf of the big players, like apple, who make it difficult & pricey to discover new music "legally" through itunes when they have 70% of the portable mp3 player market cornered with their proprietary ipod/iphones/ishuffle. Greed by record lables for not giving a discount for mp3's. Lots of people WANT to pay but it is  easier to steal & discover new music than use itunes. Check my video response for the solution.

There are actuaully some very talented bands today, like Red, Breaking Benjamin, and Disturbed, but the majority of people listen to pop, hip hop and rap, so only the songs that those people like get reckognised (spelling i know). Rock doesn't suck in 2009, but you'll have to dig way deeper than the mainstream.
