  • Hi :) What do you think about Elaine Morgan´s theory? This is sort of close to your area of speciality-i think, so your opinion must be interesting either way.

  • Your videos should be compulsory viewing in schools everywhere.

  • No, none of it happened like that.

    It happened by magic.

And, yes, I am VERY sure of this. My confidence should be enough to convince anyone.

  • @christo930 "backwards" as in time -- because evolutionary changes build on existing structures, there are macro-evolutionary progressions that cannot be completely reversed (i.e. temporally asymmetric) - in this case because cetaceans are mammals, their aquatic adaptations are the result of modifying the basic mammalian life history plan, not reverting back to a fish-like condition with gills (such a scenario is, in a practical evolutionary sense, near impossible).

  • @Tioliah I should have removed that comment because it was posted before I completely watched the video. I usually use the post comment box to write notes, so to speak, but the note was so long that I posted it. It was explained later in the video. My apologies, the video was excellent.

  • Fantastic work

  • Got a whale of a tale to tell you lads, a whale of a tale or two!

'Bout the flappin' fish and the girls I've loved on nights like this with the moon above, a whale of a tale and it's all true I swear by my tattoo!

  • I am glad I ran across this channel. The topics are interesting and the videos are very well done.

  • This is really excellent! I'm hoping to do a similar series about cetaceans soon. I was thinking about explaining their evolution at one point, but I think you already have that covered fairly well!

I'll be covering a series that's more about cetaceans in captivity and presenting the information supporting each side of the debate about keeping intelligent animals in such places. The evolution of cetaceans has fascinated me as well, but it was their intelligence that always caught my imagination

  • @PaleoSteno Thank you! I think I will make more cetacean videos in the future (they are my academic specialty so I do enjoy talking about them!) Social behaviour is my main research interest and will probably be the subject of the next cetacean video I make, so our projects will probably complement each other very well :-) Feel free to suggest any topics you're particularly interested in though!

  • @Tioliah PLEASE don't be insulted: This is stupid, but I could listen to your voice all day. Your voice sounds so curious, so adjusted, so genetically inevitable. Intelligent women make me... never mind. We'll leave it at that.

I admire your voice and intelligence and cooking. Please don't smash the strait fan boy too hard.

Just keep up the good work. Now I'll behave. Thanks

  • Awesome series.

  • Wow, this is very educational! 8D thank you for this! It's nice to find someone else who is also interested in cetaceans and their evolution!

  • @MrLordLaws The song is Melt by Leftfield (album Leftism)

  • I'm pretty sure you won't get enough creds for this video, after all I think Lil Wayne has 186? times more fans on facebook than Carl Sagan.

    But creds from me atleast!

  • @vaaaliant Thanks! If even one person watches this, likes it, and learns something, then I'm happy :-) I make them for an audience, yes, but also for me (I enjoy putting them together, and they are exercises in communication - a skill that, as a young scientist, I hope to develop well).

  • Subbed.

Looking forward to more in this series.

  • Yay! I can tell this is going to be a great series.

  • Great opening! I'm definitely going to see your next instalment in this series. Something tells me we are in for something good ;-)

  • @skinnyjohnsen Hey, thanks! I see you removed your previous comment, but I do see where you're coming from and I added a few annotations to clarify some terms - hope it helps!

  • This was amazing! I cannot wait for part 2.

  • This is a fascinating topic. I wish I could have finished school. I'm a science geek too :).

  • You have a lovely narration style - that was terrific!

  • @AuntieDiluvian That compliment means very much coming from you, thank you so much!

  • I know it was basic, but thank you for jumping through those hoops. I look forward to future parts.

I still have some naive hope for the Baiji, that you mentioned. I suppose time will tell. Great video!

  • @ctso74 I know, so sad! And it seems like we have another one set to follow soon, the little vaquita :'-(

  • I subbed when I heard you were doing a series of ancient whales, and so far I'm not disappointed. Good graphics, good text. Awaiting the rest of the series.
