For anyone that don't know what's the difference is when playing the game and some of these songs plays, listen to this video for a little bit, and I can tell u.

Okay, when the infected pictures are showing the whole special zombie, the special zombie is somewhere, but, no where near.

If the infected pictures get close to the face, watch out, it's some where near.

So, basically, as the music intensifies, the special infected is close.

Piano/strings play depending on distance.

It's especially noticeable at the start of certain maps. For example, in the No Mercy finale, chargers will often wait at the elevator for a death charge. Because of the distance from the Safe Room to the elevator, the string cue plays instead of the piano. Likewise if a bunch of infected wait at the roof on the same campaign, you'll hear multiple strings instead of piano cues.

I'm sure the piano (first one) is played when the special infected are in the ghost mode. More noticable in Versus.

Whereas the strings (second one) is played while the Special Infected is spawned/alive.

They certainly help give you an idea as to what you'll be facing at the start of each Versus level as the survivors.
