Hey, Good review and Totally great on the song. A personal thanks for uploading the video with a mixdown of the actual tracks vs just using the camera mic! Since you loaded this video, are you still using it and or what is your feedback now on the DP-008? I'm interested in getting one, but I'm snooping for the best options. I need a portable unit that is much like the 008, but is there better for a current price? I find the 008 available now for $199.00 and that seems like a great price. Thanks!
@modernsketches Yup, already got one. Using it now to lay down tracks and just got a new laptop, camera and edit software and I'm excited to create! BTW, hope to share soon.
I like the portability...the reverb settings are a little bit limited for my liking because sometimes i like to lay some dark, sinister reverb and it doesn't look like this will support the use of my old ART MR-1 or some of my other gear that I occasionally use during mixing...either way I think I want one...this goes on the Xmas/Birthday list!!!! Thanks for the review!
I'm damn glad they still make standalone multitracks...I HATE software and computers...But I guess as this idiotic generation coming under me start REALLY taking everything over with their gigantic shorts and their Curly Howard haircuts, they'll do away with anything that's sensible and easy to use, then the only way to lay trax will be to use software that won't work and will erase your song just as you're finishing it, etc...
I have a question, I just got this thing for my birthday cause I wanted something tiny. It's good I like it but I'm having a problem. When I record my voice with a song then put some reverb on it. When I go to put the song on my laptop through the USB plug.. And when it gets on my laptop it takes the reverb off, and also slips the track up my voice on one thing and then the instrumental on another... PLEASE HELP, thanks :)
Hmm..this is the moust bad recorder from Tascam....To complicated....,many functions without reason...only some reverb....no Chorus... no flanger, no dist...no DELAY!!!.....And nobady mentioned about Maximum of storage ( 1 gb SD is not enough for todays longest arangments......
davina it is really easy to use , if i can do it i know dang wel you'll love it. 97 warlock dont use the guitar side use the line in and set your input level drums will record really hot..so that might be your problem..use the line in instaed of guitar in and far as heavymetal it will record it great, too in fact just about ANY style will record great on this unit
it could be the headphones your using ..try another set because i use the headphones output to a set of mini powered speakers for monitors and have my line outs going to my stereo sounds very nice, so try another set of earphones or check your input settings, too
hi i just bought one of these i canot get sound of my guitar on my earfones no matter wat volumes are up ive the plug in the rite jax and there assigned rite too wat would b the problem its wreckin my head i thought id hear the guitar the min i plugged in and added volume my guitar leads and earfones are fine i tested em tru an amp
@willpapworth21 the song is stop this train by john mayer. Great song, and cudos for the rendition, it was pretty good. not spot on though. and of course no one can do it like john mayer.
We have just done our first live hands on review of this using keys as a source and its awesome a great piece of kit, go to our channel and check out the DP 008, its helpful
Once you have recorded onto all of your tracks, can you mix them down onto the master track - and if so, does it record any live volume/pan pot movements you make?
I am Having issues with the guitar input. Want to input the guitar using the power supply I get a loud background hum. I call support and I was told to move about the room try other outlets. Well i even moved outside and I get the same hum no matter where I plug in. Can you please help me with this. The guitars is an applause ovation acoustic guitar. It works fine if i use the DP-008 with battiers.
This realy should work with the power adapter (PS-P520).
Hi..I know you may have already tried this but if you havn't give it a go...set the input selector at the back to mic/line instead of guitar..I know this hum is a real pain you get it lots with adapters. You could also try plugging the adapter in somewhere else.into another circuit if poss or a socket other than the one you are using..hope this helps
Thanks. Very useful review. Also love John Mayer's "Stop This Train" :-) I've been trying to decide if I should get a computer based recording system but these stand-alone recorders seem to offer an awful lot of quality and simplicity for the money. You can always import the tracks to a computer if you want to play with them more.
Thanks for this review. I am also a DAW person looking for something simple to build songs. How do you find the converter quality? Have you tried mixing your tracks on your computer? Also if you use external preamps into the recorder, does it come close to better digital recordings you have made? The quality of the demo in the video is outstanding (great playing and singing too).
Thank you for posting this; I'll probably buy this for my son and me to play with. Regarding your own music - beautiful. Something happened around 4:30, but overall this is excellent. Good luck to you my friend.

i'm amazed at how sensitive the external mics are. it's good you can change the sensitivity a bit or off if you'd like. would be great for live recording
If I want to get a good distortion sound can I go from my guitar-amp-dp008 or should I just use go guitar-distortion pedal-dp008. Also, can I add drum/bass tracks through a usb like the dp04?
I am a former owner of the DP-01 model Tascam recorder. It broke a few years back and would have cost atleast $150 dollars to repair it. Since then I've been looking for affordable replacement. The DP-02 was out of my price range, but then I saw the DP-008. Could anyone tell me if this is anyway inferior to the DP-01? The fact that it has phantom power XLR inputs is a obvious upgrade but is there anything missing?

I think about buying this unit and to used like a sequencer and recorder, because I read that there was a loop recording mode mode. is this true?
when, a track is recorded, we can move on the registration of the following while listening to the first and so on? and last question, how long maximum recording if it occupies the 8-track? thank you if you have time to answer me, but I have need to be informed before buying.
Just bought this and really like it. EASY to use (I have never recorded before). Quickly could lay several tracks down and produce high quality recording in my opinion. Do wish it had more effects built in but i connect using my effects pedal and works just fine. Built in Mics work well and produced excellent acoustic guitar c/o mic.
This is cool man but the level monitor doesn't seem to show you what dB you're at. How do you know you're at a good reading and not going over? I mean is there some sort of reference?
may'be a stupid question, but why are there 4 inputs, and 8 tracks? When I look at the Zoom R16 Digital Recorder, it has 8 inputs and 8 tracks.. Please answer! Nice video btw..
@TMBofficialschannel you can go back and add on...like a one man band can do 1 track of guitar...go back and do another track (track 2) for bass or what not
@frayforprimeminister Yes, your WAV can include the reverb and any other effects you put into your master track. I have no idea why he did it that way. Kind of confusing. I just got mine a few weeks ago and I really like it.
Dp-008---Sent 1st one back.Thought it was a defect. New one does the same. my fault I'm sure.Won't record.can't get record lite to stop blinking.pressing record button and playback ZIP.
Press and hold record button while pushing playback to record.Doesn't sound hard. Then why can't I make the track light stop blinking and stay lit so I can record??
Thanks for review. Like your track. You sound a bit like Jackson Browne. Thinking about buying dp008 but have a question. The manual states that reverb can be applied AFTER the track is recorded. Can reverb also be applied to the input signal? (so that the track can be recorded with reverb). Would appreciate your view. Thanks
Without the 8 inputs and lith ion batteries makes this a failure...sorry but if I want an 8 tracker to record live I want to be able to record live...but it is cheap enough to use as a field recorder I guess.
Thank you for the demo! Compared to the Boss and Zoom devices it really does seem very easy to use. And the mics sound devent indeed! Thanks for the info!
when it says "recording two tracks at a time" does that mean I could plug in a drum machine and plug in a guitar and record both down as the first two tracks and then add subsequent tracks, up to 8 (for vocals, other guitars and samples), after that? What would I do then when I have all the tracks recorded and levels correct to "master" it as a complete song?
@emperorofthenorth5 - Yes, you can record two channels at a time, and then record the others. The stereo master does not use any channel, like microBR does, however there are not virtual tracks, as far as I know. The masters levels will be the ones used in the master recording.
How does it exactly record? Does it automatically records the sounds you made to the SD card and then you can recall them from throughout the machine? I want to record stuff in steps, so I am wondering if this might be the machine for me, since I want to record really quick and with a clear sound.
The video itself is great! You made a good review in my opinion. :D
I'm not a pro but I just bought this thing and tried to see how good it would be to record my drumset and I was very pleasantly surprised at how well it picked up the set from the built in mike I had the dp 008 @ 10 feet away from the kit and that was it maybe if it had a remote it would be that much better
Thanks for the video. I've had my DP008 for a week now and have used it daily. Very pleased except for method in which tracks and masters are transferred to the computer. Other than that, an excellent piece of equpiment that really no musician should be without (considering the price!).
Re, the internal mics. They're so good that when I accidently recorded through them instead of pair of my TLM103s, I was fooled for the first couple of takes! No hiss, hum, etc. though differently, sonically.
I'm rather torn. On the one hand the 008 is very intuitive compared to the zoom h4n. Having everything laid out before your eyes makes the recording process much easier. On the other hand, the zoom has a variety of features the 008 doesn't have. BTW, I've seen the 008 as low as $227.00 online. My jury is wayyy out, but I need to decide by July (vacation month). If you could post other examples, or walk "us" through set up, etc., that would be great.
Thank you for your very clear rundown of this unit. I too enjoyed your song. May I ask - were you able to get to a place where you could burn a cd? Or perhaps convert to mp3? If so, could you please describe that process and what software you would use? I just need a simple work tool - but need to share results with band mates. Many thanks
@partyboy1307ify you can only record 2 inputs at once, definitely the worst feature about this. you'd need a mixer if you want each person to get their own mic but either way you're going to get 5 tracks. I got one of these for my birthday, not what I wanted when I asked for a multi track recorder.
@gbc77000 Good points. So many of us learned on the old PortaOne. Recording two inputs at a time never has been a problem with me. And sure, if you have to, use a mixer, though it's not always needed. For the price and features, this is an INCREDIBLE machine!!! My PortaOne cost $649 in 1987!
@partyboy1307ify well it can be done, if you have a separate mixer where you tune in all the mics and the line ins, then going into one of the inputs on the tascam. buy a cheap behringer mixer or something.
@partyboy1307ify my band has one of these, and what we do is on track eight we record a master of everyone playing together, and then we go and record all the parts seperatly along with the master, then delete the master. it sounds really good when we do it.
I may have missed it, but did you record that demo using the built-in mics? What a great song, btw...yours or is it a cover? Sounds like Fleet Foxes...
this is a great video. can you tell me if you can play the tracks back that you have in there and record a new track while listening to all of the tracks together but are able to adjust the level so you can hear your new instrument louder during recording. I mean like if you have one guitar track already and you are adding another guitar track...you cant usually hear the one you are playing unless you can decrease the volume of the other tracks while recording...does it work this way....thanks
@MusicTechnologies that means that i can mute the signal i'm recording and listen only to the previous recorded tracks? i want to buy the dp-004 and i dont want to monitor what i'm recording because i will listen the signal through another device and feedback problems will occur if not.
@MusicTechnologies I cant seem to get my drum track loud enough when its playing back. Sound weak & distant. Almost like its recordiong from the internal mic, but i have it set to GUITAR/LINE H
good vid. i am having a hard timing deciding whether to buy this or the Tascam TASCAM DP-02 DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO. i liked the demonstration. but can you please make another vid to get deeper in the details like you said in this vid at the end? i also liked the song, sounded good and all. One last thing does it get to buzzed out if i play heavy distortion on it? thanks
Thanks for the review on this and for playing a sample from it, most people don't do that when they review multitrack recorders. I've narrowed it down this one..will be purchasing soon. Very good cover of that song also..you have a good voice.
Dude cool review, I picked this unit up when it first came out, even before there were any reviews on You Tube about it and I have to say it is a VERY good piece of gear. I also like the song you made with it the reverb gives it that southern back wood country sitting by the stream on a rock type feel to it plus it's just a good song. I wish you the best of luck with it and hope you can continue to keep making those great songs. .....PEACE!

@Kavanaghness Yes, you can do two tracks at the same time. Mic for one, guitar for the other works.

Press and hold record button while pushing playback to record.Doesn't sound hard. Then why can't I make the track light stop blinking and stay lit so I can record??

I really like your music, is there anywhere I can check it out?

Great demo, you are very talented.
I was considering buying one of these units, does it come with a built in and recorderable drum machine? Cheers.

Thanks

Only 4 AA's(and they're included), not 6, otherwise decent review bud! I say spend the 20-30 bucks and just get the adaptor.

Without the 8 inputs and lith ion batteries makes this a failure...sorry but if I want an 8 tracker to record live I want to be able to record live...but it is cheap enough to use as a field recorder I guess.

i want this so bad but i want to know how many songs i can record so can someone tell me please?? :)

Thank you for the demo! Compared to the Boss and Zoom devices it really does seem very easy to use. And the mics sound devent indeed! Thanks for the info!

big question (im a little confused):
when it says "recording two tracks at a time" does that mean I could plug in a drum machine and plug in a guitar and record both down as the first two tracks and then add subsequent tracks, up to 8 (for vocals, other guitars and samples), after that? What would I do then when I have all the tracks recorded and levels correct to "master" it as a complete song?
emperorofthenorth5 1 year ago
@emperorofthenorth5 - Yes, you can record two channels at a time, and then record the others. The stereo master does not use any channel, like microBR does, however there are not virtual tracks, as far as I know. The masters levels will be the ones used in the master recording.
It's a very nice portable recorder.

Is this suitable for just piano and vocal, what are your thoughts?

How does it exactly record? Does it automatically records the sounds you made to the SD card and then you can recall them from throughout the machine? I want to record stuff in steps, so I am wondering if this might be the machine for me, since I want to record really quick and with a clear sound.
The video itself is great! You made a good review in my opinion. :D

Is it good with drums?
matttee13 1 year ago
@matttee13
I'm not a pro but I just bought this thing and tried to see how good it would be to record my drumset and I was very pleasantly surprised at how well it picked up the set from the built in mike I had the dp 008 @ 10 feet away from the kit and that was it maybe if it had a remote it would be that much better

I've had mine for 2 weeks now. Great quality, pd $227 @ Sam Ash. Manual is clearly written.

DavesTrumpet 1 year ago
I'm rather torn. On the one hand the 008 is very intuitive compared to the zoom h4n. Having everything laid out before your eyes makes the recording process much easier. On the other hand, the zoom has a variety of features the 008 doesn't have. BTW, I've seen the 008 as low as $227.00 online. My jury is wayyy out, but I need to decide by July (vacation month). If you could post other examples, or walk "us" through set up, etc., that would be great.

I meant 2 tracks, not 5.

Many thanks

Does anybody know if it's possible to record a 5 piece band with this or is it just like for a solo poject
partyboy1307ify 1 year ago
@partyboy1307ify you can only record 2 inputs at once, definitely the worst feature about this. you'd need a mixer if you want each person to get their own mic but either way you're going to get 5 tracks. I got one of these for my birthday, not what I wanted when I asked for a multi track recorder.
jheychode 1 year ago
@jheychode You asked for a multi-track and you got one.
The Beatles recorded their whole Sgt. Pepper album using only a 4 track recorder.
Listen to that album and see what you can do by ping ponging tracks.
I don't think you understand how to recored multiple tracks otherwise you wouldn't be so ungrateful and bitch about a great gift.
gbc77000 1 year ago
@gbc77000 Good points. So many of us learned on the old PortaOne. Recording two inputs at a time never has been a problem with me. And sure, if you have to, use a mixer, though it's not always needed. For the price and features, this is an INCREDIBLE machine!!! My PortaOne cost $649 in 1987!

@DavesTrumpet I bought a Yamaha mt4x in like 94 and it was almost 600

@DavesTrumpet the thing that's sold me is your song and the sound of it,
i'm in the process of buying one i have a project that i'm doing as a tribute
to a late life long friend, one thing i still need to know, u mentioned u had
guitar pluged in one input while using the mic on the machine it self, did u
have to do one thing at a time or did u do both at the same time, playing
guitar while utilizing the mics, ty . . .
fabulous50ts 1 year ago
@partyboy1307ify it will only record two tracks at a time,,,
MusicTechnologies 1 year ago
@partyboy1307ify well it can be done, if you have a separate mixer where you tune in all the mics and the line ins, then going into one of the inputs on the tascam. buy a cheap behringer mixer or something.
MyLifeChanger 1 year ago
@partyboy1307ify my band has one of these, and what we do is on track eight we record a master of everyone playing together, and then we go and record all the parts seperatly along with the master, then delete the master. it sounds really good when we do it.
BurtonIbanez9 10 months ago
@partyboy1307ify You could record each instrument separately, or do a live recording using the two built in stereo mics.

I may have missed it, but did you record that demo using the built-in mics? What a great song, btw...yours or is it a cover? Sounds like Fleet Foxes...

My $.02 - GET THE POWER SUPPLY !!!!!
These suck batteries ...even when you disable the backlight. It gets expensive fast.......believe me. Power supply is $25-$30
A small mixer to interface helps
Shop prices........at reputable dealers.....I recently saw $225. ! I paid $299 January 2010.

this is a great video. can you tell me if you can play the tracks back that you have in there and record a new track while listening to all of the tracks together but are able to adjust the level so you can hear your new instrument louder during recording. I mean like if you have one guitar track already and you are adding another guitar track...you cant usually hear the one you are playing unless you can decrease the volume of the other tracks while recording...does it work this way....thanks
stevoe1000 1 year ago
@stevoe1000 it does. you just need earphones to you can do that.
gurtru 1 year ago
@stevoe1000 yes, you can listen to all previous recoded tracks, and adjust the volumes while recording a new track
MusicTechnologies 1 year ago
@MusicTechnologies that means that i can mute the signal i'm recording and listen only to the previous recorded tracks? i want to buy the dp-004 and i dont want to monitor what i'm recording because i will listen the signal through another device and feedback problems will occur if not.
petermarvin81 1 year ago

Great song!

I wish you the best of luck with it and hope you can continue to keep making those great songs. .....PEACE!
