Burton doesn't need to say those things, he only shows you a vision of a Batman standing in the shadow or saving the gotham city. And you make your own decisions about what you have seen.
What is deep about Nolan's batman? Everything is spelled out for you, there is no room for interpretation.

Around the time of Burton's film, Batman had a very strict no kill policy for decades. Burton was called on this a number of times it was so against the character, he eventually admitted he done f*ed up. I loved the movie, just not a fan of Keaton Batman.

Nolan's batman tries to be cool by saying everything out loud "I am the night", "he is the dark knight, the hero".
Burton doesn't need to say those things, he only shows you a vision of a Batman standing in the shadow or saving the gotham city. And you make your own decisions about what you have seen.
What is deep about Nolan's batman? Everything is spelled out for you, there is no room for interpretation.

Burton's films focused on emotion and how the city view batman, along with his relationships. Nolan goes more to the moral dilema of batman, which was masterfully presented in the Dark Knight. Scarecrow was bad but I think Neson and Ledger did a terrific job, The thing is batman returns gave a central story to the villains as much as batman while Nolans batman was about batman. They are all terrific movies I prefer the first batman and the Dark Knight respectively but that is my opinion.

It was too sad when he died....and then the penguins came and gave him a watery grave. I'd say Batman has the best villains because they all had some sort of gritty dark past and it shows on them. Every one of them would drive a psychiatrist insane.

I still get teary-eyed. Sure, Penguin was a monster, inside and out, but you can hardly blame him for it. About 1:30, the waterworks start going. By the way, it's been almost 20 years and I still cannot tell why he died in the movie. Surely it wasn't the fall? The toxic waste? Opinions please.

@ghastlygrin23 well said. The score was epic. Burton and Elfman always make magic but this was one of their best collabarations. Wonderful emotion filled soundtrack. To answer your question I'd say a little of both.

To me The Penguin is a character in the film that you (the audience) want dead by the end of the film, and when he does die you feel a weird sympathy for him.
