  • so...how do I build it?

  • holy shit!...someone who doesnt have an accent is making a tutorial on how to make a 35mm adapter.

  • more jared

  • Shallow depth of field on a budget.. green screen yourself.. now take your background (picture or film) and blur it... BAM WOW YOU HAVE SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD! Now you just need a cheap green screen and good lighting

  • @xTurnipTimex too bad this normally looks like shit and if u want a moving shot of any kind will require motion tracking. just spend the cash on a good 35mm adapter and lenses, and try not to think like lucas

  • Comment removed

  • 'Increase the shutter speed'... These guys are want to be film students.

  • @romskatepark How so?

  • 0:5 Id be more subtle with the lighting

  • i might get an adapter, if you mix your audio better....

  • why not just get an hd dslr?

  • @Videofool12

because this video was 2 years ago

  • @reincarnage256 ok. fair do's

  • i knew what it was when i saw this video a while back, but i didnt know what it did at first, its sobviouse, but now i know, well like 3 weeks ago i knew

  • hahah cool!

  • yeah, I'm gonna buy the redrock m2 encore for 2000$!!

  • the problem with the adapter is it eat up alot of light! and if you watch a Hollywood movie not every scene is blerred, the adapter will make all your footage milky looking with DOF, looks nothing like film! you can do a nice rack shot but how many rack shots do you see in a movie? a rack shot is to introduce something in the back related to the story. These adapters are over rated and in my opinion a waste of money! there junk!

  • no matter what kind of light you use or how high tech a digital camera is it will NEVER look as good as 35mm film.

  • i cqan biuld one for 45€ - 60$

  • that was actually pretty informative.

  • im going to poop one out of my butthole and attach it to my camera

  • @Zeetoofilms Awesome!

  • @Zeetoofilms if i get a wide angle lens will i get better depth of feild i mean 35mm prime lenses are wide angle

  • i loved minute film school.....

  • 1:16 - How about the EnCinema one? It's the most cheap 35mm adapter out there right now

  • When having a 35mm adapter does cause the picture go upside down?

  • @AMOVIEGUY14 It does, but it's easily fixed in post by just flipping it

  • @ColombianForLife How can that work?

  • If you're interested in seeing what footage looks like using this adapter search ABDavis and look for a short movie called "Open Doors" or click on my profile and check out my favorites playlist. We used this adapter, a Nkon 50mm lens, a Canon Vixia HG20, and Final Cut Pro.

  • really good show

  • i wanna get the letus mini, but only because it flips the image around. or else i;d get a jag

  • Thanks folks - getting onto it.

  • Building one over the break for sure!

  • Awsome stuff i bought one from ikord its awsome go check out my first vid. i filmed it with a panasonic nv-gs230. not all of it was filmed with the 35mm adapter.

  • Man if I wasn't 500 dollars in debt I'd totally buy this, lol

  • i just recently got a letus adapter. when i film i get some delay while scanning on my lcd screen. is this normal or is there something loose in there. when i edit it seems to be fine. i think.

  • I was going to get myself an adaptor but then I was like "You know what, I am sick of life" so I bought myself a 3CCD VHS camera and may I say that was the best thing I have bought in a long time. If you are getting an adaptor make sure you AT LEAST have a 3CCD DV camera to go with it. Once you have gone 3CCD you'll never go back! Either that or you can get a big bertha (Shoulder cam) and link your DV cams video input to the shoulder cams output and shazam. Instant cheese in a bucket of hay.....

  • hi i want to know regardless if a make one or buy the adapter is it true that i have to buy and additional piece coz i heard attaching the adopter ur picture will com upside down on ur lcd or viewfinder

  • or buy a DSLR that shoots video and use a prime lens Eg :- Canon 5D MkII and L series lens Job do " What ...too much you say ok a 550D and a nifty fifty ( ..f/1.8 50mm MkII) cheap as chips and usable imaging.

  • 35mm adapters are sooooo overrated. Lighting and composition, and editing, and 24p and all of that are more important.

if you really want a cool Hollywood look, you should look for anamorphic lens adapters. They're similar to wide angle lenses, but they only make the video wider horizontally, and that makes the video look alot like a Michael bay movie or Star Trek. And Anamorphic lenses created cool lens flares.

  • why do you think one is more important than the other? also, jj abrams and michael bay create cool lens flares, not just anamorphic lenses. if you want a lens flare, you can get one without an anamorphic lens. oh, and i dont think you know what anamorphic means.

  • yes i do. anamorphic lenses squeeze the video into the already existing frame. then you change the pixel aspect ratio to get the wide picture. Anamorphic flares are just a plus. Anamorphic lenses are cooler because they create a wider field of view. anamorphic means stretched or wide.

I don't think that one is more important than the other, I just prefer anamorphic adapters to 35mm adapters.

But I do thing that lighting, composition, and editing and 24p ARE more important.

  • i'm not going to argue that lighting, composition, and frame rate aren't important because they definitely are. also not going to say anamorphic lenses aren't amazing. but, at the same time i can emulate 2.35 by cropping a 16:9 (even though you lose a little) unless you're just talking about getting 16:9 to which you might as well just get a camera that shoots widescreen.

  • i just bought an encinema 35mm adapter and it works great. cheap as fuck too.

  • how much was it

  • it was like 214 bucks

  • @mrffffilms were?

  • hey

im wondering if anyone is interested in buying an adapter which i build, i spent over 450 on making it, and in my opinion it can be compared to the redrock and letus DOF adapters, anyone interested?

pm me and i will give you the full list of what comes with it

i am looking to get 300 for it, but am willing to negotiate

i will be putting it up on ebay in the next few days.

  • view london snow storm SHOT ON 35MM CLICK LINK ABOVE

bbc films - no infringment intended

  • @Xgametracer

It is an adapter whoch lets you use lenses from analogue / older / bla... cameras and gives you a nice depth of field.

  • does this work with any camcorder????

  • as long as you but the right adapter it can work for a lot of them

  • (write "trailer colori vivi" tell me what do you think? thanks..)scrivete "trailer colori vivi" mi dite che ne pensate? grazie

  • its and "adapter" onto which you can put lenses on. By that i mean it allows you to put actual film lenses (like that you would onto any still camera like nikon or canon) on your video camera. It basically gives you much more variety with focusing and actually affects your frame rate a little.

  • .. to answer your question on minute 3:45. the reason you get a shallow depth of field on wide open IRIS is because its bringing light from various angles , only a certain section gets focused, leaving the rest blurry. Deep depth of field is the opposite, you have a smaller IRIS so all light comes from less angles which makes it clearer. Analogy, when you get pulled over and cops flashes his flashight on you to check you for dilated eyes (open IRIS) , he wants to see how clear you can see.

  • Use Nikon 50mm 1.8 D shes sharp!!

  • im totaly geting 1 of thes there sweeet!!!

  • Does that mean I could use the lenses from my DSLR on a camcorder?

  • from what i've read around on the internet, yes. but depending on the adaptor, it may or may not work with the brand of lens/lenses you already have. be sure to check in to that.

  • That commercial "quick tip" is...just stupid. It brakes the #1 rule in film making. The 180 rule.

  • That was an ugly mistake.

  • Rules were made to be broken....Naw I'm just joking, breaking the 180 rule is bad.

  • Camera rules are meant to be broken!

  • Alright, my movies look good, but they could always use that 35mm look.

Would a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens work as a make shift 35mm adapter for my canon HV30?

    -Sean

  • Bring 4 minute film school back!

  • Great episode. I made an adapter based on the jetsetmodels schematic. You can view it on my page if you'd like.

  • hey can u tell me how much it was to make one and if you can tell me how to?

and do u need a manual foucusing on the camcorder?

  • as for manual focus... u need to be able to focus, not all the time, just at least from a menu or something. This is because the shot needs to stay focused on the adapter itself, and all other focusing will be done by the actual lens that u put on it. So, if ur camera doesn't have the option to go into manual focus whatsoever, it won't work, as far as I know.

  • get a twoneil.

  • could somebody tell me a cheap camera that I could use a 35mm adapter on? I doubt my old Canon MV960 would do it. im looking for really cheap okey, i want to use it with skate films so it may get a bit broken haha

  • Pick up a used HV20 on ebay.

  • okay i know that this is an old comment but u don't want a 35mm adapter for skate films trust me that will give u RAZOR shallow DOF, and it will be a manual focus situation as well, which means that most consumer cameras won't work and you'll literally have to sit there and coreograph all the focus pulling and stuff it will not work

  • Look up skate videos by : steve griggs

  • Ah... I see. However, notice that the actual moving shots are done with the aperture closed down so that there is little DOF effect. If you meant that u were gonna use it for less actiony shots like those at the beginning of the video, then by all means go ahead. Just make sure to close down the aperture on moving shots, it will be impossible to chase after someone and pull focus at the same time lol i can see someone doing that...

  • I will be using an HV30 w/ an FD 50mm f1.8 lens. I was looking at the Jag35Pro ($300) but I'm wondering if it's more than what I need, or if I can get a better deal elsewhere.

I know the difference between static & vibrating but I don't SEE any difference. I believe I want the achromat lens but I really see no difference w/o it. What's the best deal & best quality adapter out there for my needs? I want the best quality adapter for my lens but do I really need a vibrating lens that is achromat??

  • There's A LOT of misleading information in this video. Hire a DP who understands the tech issues involved & who can understand your vision. Otherwise, learn the science of what is going on.

The 35mm adaptor's greatest strength in manipulating depth of field is not the lenses it can use.

Zooming in does not actually change the size if the Bokeh (the magical element of depth of field).

Respectable DP's do not change the shutter to "waste light" unless it is the last option. Use ND.

  • I'm considering a Jag35Pro...any better suggestions? I'm on a budget and I don't want the homemade cheap look in my films--achromat, 5m screen...is it worth the $300?

  • I'm having a tough time choosing an affordable adapter...should I go with the Jag35Pro or just a cheap, static one?

  • hire one

  • im ordering a letus today, but man if i ever have a subject that pink like they did at the start someone kill me

  • Woah, that gl2 at 2:00 is dwarfed by the lens. I love the wood and foam support.

  • im not doing jack shit!!!!

  • I cant wait to afford one...

  • i'm building one wait for my gg holder to arrive :)

  • I'm still confused. What is difference between adapter and lens? So confusing.

  • the adapter the the thing you add to the camera to let it 'see' through the lens.. the lens is the thing that lets the light into the camera. it connects... camera to adapter.. adapter to lens. depending on the aperature you can get really good dof shots.

  • I know a red rock specifically has a spinning ground glass which creates a grain look to add texture to your frames, so that it looks like the grain of the film. It gives movement to it.

  • Hey Steve.............I recently purchased a dof adapter from a guy named, "Ikor"........Cost me 200 bucks........I also bought a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens to compliment my canon hf100........I still want to get a more "cinematic" look out of my videos.............Can I acheive this given my current setup, or do you have any other suggestions.......I do 1980's horror short films.............so far, that is..

  • what camera is that at 2:01

  • it is a canon gl 2

  • yes!

  • All of the footage with the adapter here lacks any good sharp focus where there should be. Maybe it wasn't put on quite right or it's a negative to placing another lens in front of an already existing lens.

  • I'm planning on buying an HV20 or 30 in about a month. With all I've looked at, all the forum entries and what is on the web; I think I'm going to try my hand at building an adapter.

I'm very handy at making things so I know I can build it. What I am concerned about is getting the results I want. I would like to get the least amount of vignetting as possible, I can always add in post if wanted.

  • these sucks.

  • Wait for the HV40 this summer.

  • Question about the HV20, cause Im considering buying one, It is digital and isnt tape is it?

  • Yes it is digital AND Yes it is tape.

  • Thanks!

So this means I can just hook it up to my computer?

  • you connect it to you computer by firewire lead, into imovie/movie maker/ final cut pro/ avid

  • i don't know!!! :'(

  • I have a Canon hg10 and am wondering what DIY brand would work best and what settings i would use with it. Anything is helpful.

  • lol, did you overdubbed the guy with the imac?

  • You guys are amazing

  • Ugh!.. Buy things?.. Ugh! :D:D LOL

  • he couldn't have wrote it better...

  • For christmas i got about 80 dollars.

What camera should i get? Or about how much of my money should i save to get a better one?

    - littlemissemo7

(srry, i'm using my brothers account..)

  • if you want a good camera you're going to need a lot more than $80

  • it really depends on what youre looking at, if you want a third hand one off of ebay for practise it could suffice.

  • In the end, the last thing you should worry about is the format. I am a DP and accept that camera is often times sacrificed for sound or for the sake of performances. It's just the way the cookie crumbles. Your film can look great and still suck. A lens adapter is NOT a universal answer for production quality! You can refute this, I don't care: master your storytelling techniques as well as your understanding of photographic equipment, THEN get an adapter. The results will be better guaranteed.

  • I've built one my myself. It's not for the faint at heart. Lens adapters are great, but saying that they make things look real is a complete cop-out. You should focusing on quality production design and lighting and acting if you want to come off believable, especially as beginners.

  • much less in case you working on

    documentary.....

it is a awesome useful shit.

  • When you zoom in, the focal length lengthens, which also effects the DOF.

  • Your videos are good. I suggest you link these to DynamycDesi - you can win awards there.

  • this was one of your most helpful videos, thanks for making this!

  • One way to fake depth of field is to add blur to the backround of what you are filming.

  • hmm...if you're using a camera has deep focus, like a lot of standard video cameras, create depth using lights and using objects within the frame. I'm not completely sure what you're talking about here, haha. To each their own...

  • WOW that's great. thanks for that man that really helped :D

  • That quicktips girl is pretty foxy.

  • lol uhg buy things uhg lol

  • You guys are awesome! Im in the market and you have answered alot of questions for me. Thanks!

  • what kind of camera was this clip filmed with?

  • Here's a quick tip: DON'T USE THE RED ROCK MICRO! First, it flips your image upside down, which must be corrected in post, and that is time consuming. Also, when you use it, you lose a couple F Stops, which means you have to dump A LOT of light on your subject and it really screws things up unless you are shooting outside on a sunny day. Also, some of the stuff you shot for this segment looked like crap.

  • new version from what i gather will flip with optics.

  • Every 35mm adapter flips the image, StuntmanJake

  • Ohhhhh post. So time consuming. Throw a vertical flip effect on your project. So scary. Either you are on a slow machine or do not like rendering work in post. Its like saying don't use lighting in your production because its so time consuming.

  • hey, the footage seems to have some severe chromatic abbreviation, i think the adapter's achromatic lens is not so good....

  • do you know what an abbreviation is?

maybe you mean chromatic abboration? or actually maybe you mean the camera's saturation is too high and on the wrong white balance/the lights are wrong colour temperature

  • hmmm...looks like a simple camera operator error + severe compression = bad scenario.

  • hey guys I have a 35mm adapter im selling for 200 bucks message me for a lot more info

  • i'd be interested in more info...

  • can you put it on camcorders like the Canon ZR930?

  • can you put it on a canon mini dv camcorder like the Canon ZR930?

  • i build my first adapter about 6 years ago. yesterday i build two of them for about...0€. you can see some test footage on my channel...my cameras are pretty old though.

  • wich is the best 35mm adapter for CanoXHA1?

  • RNG35!

  • yesterday i accidentaly discovered the DOF adaptor and this helpe me a lot

  • i wanna rent one for my music video but idk if i wanna use the redrockm2 or the 35mm witch one is best to use???

  • hell yes for christmas

  • steve looks like a big tool in that damn hat

  • This tutorial is amazingly shot. Everythign makes sense and effects, transitsions and voic overs and shit....they all ROCK......I need to learn from you guys on making documentairies or how -toos

  • they didnt even make it!

  • Thanks for the proffesionel information.

    bAEsE Filmproduktion

  • The stuff you can buy for thousands of dollars is cheap junk. Just make an adapter out of 2" pvc connectors and piping. It's a plastic tube with a chunk of ground glass in the middle. Can you say rip off? frosted cd rom+toy electric spinny motor=spinning DOF.

  • What Lens Did you use on the Adapter?

  • it doesnt look very realistic i reccomend SGpro

  • It's not really the adapter but the lens. It looks like they used a Lensbabie lens with the crazy focus.

  • damn thanks for the 101 info

  • Maan, I really, really want this adapter. But $1,600. Day-amn.

  • I've build a static adapter with parts I already had at home, so if you don't want to spend $1,600, build your own. I've posted some sample footage on my Youtube account.

You can also built a vibrating (more professional with better quality) adapter wich should cost about $150-300 depending where you buy the parts, e-bay= cheapest.

Just google it and you'll find some tutorials on how to build one.

  • It does not make sense.

This video should be on Vimeo in HD

    Please.

  • hey guys, i think i may have just made a 35mm adapter for free. idk if it is really working but it looks like it is.

  • how did you do it? and do you have sample footage!?

  • Being a throwback to film cameras, I have a few quick lenses so I've messed with DOF. the wider the aperature, the narrower the DOF. Macro photos (really close) have narrowest DOF. The closer you are to the subject, the narrower the DOF for a given lens. Also, in still cameras, which is what your 35mm lens for the adapter will come from, a prime lens is one that does not zoom. You can get a large aperature 50mm lens cheapest from a '70's slr. It's manual focus only with these rigs.

  • thanx guys great video but you didnt say anything about Movietube and P+S technik adapters. im gonna hire one of them for a music video which one do you suggest ? REDROCK ? P+S or Movietube?

  • the p+s is absolutely amazing, i used it on a feature i worked on a while back. and we didn't cover it because they are the most expensive adapter on the market (base price for the pro35 is $17,000).

    -jared from indymogul

  • UGH.!!!! Need 5g's for a pro camera!!! What Kind would you suggust??

  • Panasonic AG-HVX200

  • Will the adapter on the front of the already existing camera lens act like a tele-converter thus making your lenses a lot less wide?

Also, does the adapter make you loose light, because it is having to travel through more glass and mirrors?

  • -no, your field of view will be determined by what lens you place on it.

-yes, you'll lose anywhere from half a stop to one and a half stop depending on what adapter you're using.

    -jared from indymogul

  • i dont really get what the adapter does.

  • it makes depth of field more shallow, rendering background out of focus and your subject more in focus, giveing your footage a grainy filmy look.

  • hahahah

    "ugh! buy things...ugh!"

hahahah, i love the way he read it

  • Im deff gonna have my dad buy a 35mm adapter....sence were making a vietnam war film. I want it to look as good as possable.

  • Its called Dyslexia... you should google it might learn something new.

  • Actually it does, Half the time I get words, letters & numbers mixed up.

  • brett, just stop! Grow the fuck up...

  • i plan to destroy the world with my diy 35 mm adapter

i will put a laser through so it becomes a death laser beam

    then i will kill everyone.....

    maybe.......

  • Powned

  • 35 MM Adapter.Sweet!

  • wow that's cool. I love to buy one

  • Look UP BREVIS 35 or Mini35 or even movietube for an expensive model

  • well, I don't have the money to buy or make one. So could you guys maybe have a contest and have the prize be a 35mm adapter?

  • Now there are 72 comments,

    Good show steve!

  • i wish that they went back to showing the different type of filming and the history of film instead of telling us about the equipment. But I still love all the info I can get. THANKS!
