  • Great Great Work! Is the info on AA composers catalogued somewhere online? I would love to research this more...I found a few sites with a little info but I would like to find more. Thanks

  • I'm sad that this is the only reference I could find to Florence Price's The Deserted Garden on youtube. It would be great if someone could post the entire piece performed. Anyway, thanks for posting this.

  • Rachel is so well-spoken. She makes the perfect ambassador for violinists. I hope she has included Clarence Cameron White in this study. I look forward to hearing more of all these composers' works.

  • HAHA CLAYTON!!

  • African American compositions, especially, those of whom are deceased, are notoriously underrepresented. Partly because we, culturally, do not take care of our estate, i.e., no will, no publishing, registered copyrighted material. I know of many composers whose work is sitting in their offsprings' piano bench or cedar chest because THEY want to feel important by hoarding their family members' art. Composers compose so that their work is heard. Release it correctly so it can bless others.

  • Yes, this is a continual challenge. It's very important for composers and their heirs to protect all of their copyrights, but it's also so important for great music to be enjoyed by students, performers, and audiences...

  • @JayBeeThree

yes, it is true. Blacks should become more active in socalled classical music, as it is not something reserved for whites/asians. To me it is just another approach towards music, with a written base, unlike Rock and Jazz or folcloric music.

Try the movie "Kinshasa Symphony" or the trailer here on youtube.

    Peace

  • that little girl play like she full of spirit and Rachel play like she is too

  • Actually, I guess I should say potentially successful, seeing that much of the "success" of Bernstein's Chichester Psalms is attributed to the number of times it has been performed since 1965.

  • Interesting! I'm interested in doing something similar, but using a 21st century African American Composer's choral composition that would be comparable in success to that of Bernstein's Chichester Psalms.

  • love love love to have come across this vid!!! im about to do something like this at Penn State University next fall! Thanks for putting this up. And i'm pretty sure I saw the 14yr old violinist perform here in the fall with the sphinx orchestra. they were awesome.

  • wonderful

  • i am sooo glad to see that someone is making an effort to get black composers recognized. the music is absolutely beautiful and tells a story. people feel emotions when they listen to this kind of music. i absolutely adore miss rachel barton pine for her effort

  • haha clayton is there

  • Blimey, American news opens differently to English news lol, they're presented like characters from a drama series XD

  • yay it's clayton!

  • Thank you! We had a grad student at my univeristy who recently did his thesis on Florence Price. What great music!

  • you are an amazing woman.

  • Using your passion, talent and generosity to make this a better world. Thats what its all about! You have my deepest respect and admiration.
