this is awesome! haven't seen this since I as a kid in brooklyn - this hand scared the hell out of me everytime! Wasn't this on saturday afternoons? There's a scary movie that I remember seeing quite possibly during chiller but can't remember for the life of me. I remember it was black and white (but then again, it could have been that I was watching on a bw tv set!) and there was a frightening woman-monster running through the woods then is shot or killed. Anyone know what film this is?
I've seen things that I personally find quite a bit creepier than this (possibly because it was made in 1971 or thereabouts LOL), but it still is surreal and at least a bit eerie. I will admit that much. ;)
Does anyone remember a horrow show that it was a lady running in the forest (around dawn). It's foggy - I also remember that a coffin opens up and the words "BOO" pop on the screen. It was late 70's. I lived in Brownsville TX so not sure if the show was national. Ive been looking for this video for a long time.
man!!! I freaking miss this on saturday nights!!! I was a kid in the 70's and remember forcing myself to stay awake on the couch while my parents played cards with friends in the dining room...whats wrong with the networks today??? if i see one more "reality crap" show i'm gonna puke!!...i can't even watch tv anymore...i guess thats why theres YouTube!!!!
Ah those memories of saturday morning I could hardly wait to see what was on I was and still am a big horror/sci-fi fan back in the late 60's earfly 70's and of course cartoons the banana splits which would usaully lead into a cartoon like space ghost. was a favorite as well.

i love the sounds effects, many b-rated retro horror movies would had great sound effects. the sounds effects and music used in movies nowadaty is stupid too, along with everything else.
@yonoid88 LOL that was what we used to say in the 70's. Did you now the Chiller hand has 6 fingers. i loved this and Creature Feature, miss those days.
Back in the 70's, my bed time was the same time that the Chiller Theater came on channel 9. I would always stay up just long enough to see the hand and then go to bed. I always thought it was really cool.
I also always tried to count the fingers on the hand, because they always seemed like there were more than the week before.

@AstroMayan ...YES..i second that 200%(lol if thats possible) for all the drawbacks of this present day of 500 channels of nothing, reality TV and loads of other crap entertianment...at least the internet provides actual visual and audio memories of better times and quality in pop culture tv/movies/radio to make up for a truly great and memorable (late 50's to around the early 90's) era in entertianment thats now long gone...and missed badly by those who remember it.
Anyone remember in channel 13/WNET back then that cool sort of promotional opening that had a camera panning down low thru all these little toys and soldiers and stuff and some music playing? only words I remmber was " in, out"
Chiller, Los Angeles in the early 70's had the words "chiller" shining on a wavy black liquid and then a skull surfaces with it's mouth wide open as if it is screaming and then it sinks. When you are a kid these things stay with you for ever.
No one seems to have the whole footage! I remember the blood flowed from the background first when it started and then pooled before the hand came out. Then when the movie ended there was another showing of the hand, possibly playing in reverse!
Does anyone know how many differn't openings to this show?i remmber one that has a man running in a graveyard like something chasing him and all u see is the bottom half running past tombstones and hear him out out breath till he comes to one tombstone says chiller theater. Also during breaks they show this red curtain says we be right back and has a creepy guy looking behind it.I can't seem to find the into to it anywhere.
Found it! YouTube is the best. Apparently, the host was called Sir Cecil Creape - he was the Phantom of the Opry. They have tape of the opening sequence, etc. I was a bit older by then, and this wasn't scary, it was pure camp.
As for the other - I just remember the tag line "Tonight, on haunted hollywood" - it sounded just like John Carradine.
There are 2 "shows" (openings) from the 70s &/or 80s that don't seem to be here on YT - with all the ones that ARE here, I wonder why. (They even have the 4:30 movie!) 1 called "Haunted Hollywood" (I think on ABC, at like 1-2 am) & 1 called "Phantom of the Opry" as in grand old. That was on the country music channel & had an actual horror movie host. One night they even showed a movie in early 3D! Anyone remember these or have video to u/l?
Wow! I can't believe this is here. Growing up in NYC was a blessing, so many cool things to do and see, like the "great" TV programming. Now if I can only find "Kraft Suspense Theater", what an opening that had.
@guitarbrad Not only the Suspiria commercial, but the one they showed for "Beyond The Door" when Juliet Mills goes "whooooo arrree youuuuu" with that twisted face and that sinister laugh.
Chiller Theatre's late night TV spots promoted the horror films of the day as they were current releases or movies that were still in theatres at the time. I also remember their TV spots for "Dawn Of the Dead" and "Zombie" and their famous end lines:
@Shawnster65 I just saw the "Beyond The Door" one - man is that freaky! Damn no wonder we kids of the 70s were all screwed up! This show was famous, apparently, for showing commercials of this kind.
We should all get together and make a support group for adults in their 40s who are still a little weirded out by seeing these commercials when we were young.
@guitarbrad Haha, now that sounds like an idea, a support group for all of us scared by those early childhood memories of horror movie trailers. God knows with films like "Beyond The Door" 1 and "Suspiria", it's not like we don't have a reason to NOT have one....
@Shawnster65 I watched a few of those horror movie compilation videos that are on YouTube. Many of them brought back memories - as most are from the 70s - but I admit I never saw a lot of them. It just goes to show what a great era the 70s were for horror movies.
@guitarbrad Indeed it WAS a great time for horror movies, my friend.
The fact that we were younger is what originally scared us, (with the Chiller-era movies) but as time went along, we were being introduced to more and more horrifying and graphic movies thru their late-night commercials, and it truly was too much for some of our little imaginations (which usually ran away with us when we headed for bed!)
WPIX was the BEST for those growing up in the 70s!! Space 1999, 3 Stooges, Little Rascals, the Munsters, how about TV Pix (kids would call in and play a cheezy videogame on the tv to win prizes during weekday afternoon shows)? There sadly will never be tv the way we remembered it. Dam, I want a Chocodile....
@drupiter- Saturday nights they would show the twighlight zone, followed by prisoner cell block-H, followed by a rock music show hosted by twiggy (I'm turning japanese-ah!)- my brother and i would eat an entenman's cake EACH and drink 6 pepsi's each- bliss! WPIX, god how I loved you!
you bastard hand!!! you used to scare the shit out of me at nights.now look at you just some corny graphics on my computer screen 38 years later ha ha ha those were the days why was i so afraisd of the hand? well to be honest the shit is still creepy by any standard
@merrittolsen, "but where are the shows??" Gone but certainly not forgotten. Replaced with some of the most horrific blood and guts crap I've ever seen. Call it corny or whatever else you choose, these shows made tv worth watching, and they'll never be able to recapture that no matter how hard they try.
this was a must for us boys to watch chiller theater no other scary movies were on besides creature feature i remember at night at 8:00 on Saturdays i used to get scared of the voice saying chiller
I heard someone had posted this! Thankyou very much!
I remember watching these with my dad when I went to visit him in NY back in the 70's! Brings back some great memories! I (like many of the other post-ers) miss those days of schlock horror movie TV!
I can't believe that I found this, talk about a blast from the past! This is amazing and just reminds me of how good and simple things were. This used to scare the shit out of me but, man, is it a fond memory of my childhood.
And yes, this usually was scarier than the movie:-).
Brooklyn '71 Brother and I would watch this. He would scare the shit out of me by saying 'If you do not do this( give him my cake or bubble toy from the corner 5cent spinner), the Chiller will get you". I did whatever. This damn 6 fingered hand did me in. The movies did nothing. The hand made me give up my cake or my egg cream soda,,,every week. Still freaks me out.
Oh man, sounds like he really knew how to scare you to get goodies, lol
But now that you're older, you probably look back and remind yourself that Brooklyn '71 Brother now owes you a TON of egg cream soda and cake and a few of your 5-cent spinner toys back, hehe
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to ya' too mate :-) How this clip takes me back..my cousin Jim and I would always flick back and forth between this and WNEW 5's Creature Features. We never broke any channel selectors though, lol
I miss it all man, the Aurora monster kits, the monster magazines, Jiffy Pop, Screamin' Yellow Zonkers, and cereal bowls with a ton of sugar at the bottom to get you going on Saturday morning. Fun times!
I remember too - all alone in my dad's studio apartment over in Washington Heights - didn't even matter what the movie was - just as long as I could see this part
Grin, no ... this aired for 25 years on WPiX Channel 11 New York, from '61 to '82 ... it's been revived as an annual Halloween Special. It was hosted for 2 years by Zacherley, then went hostless. WPiX is an affiliate of the CW network.
Another similar show that was syndicated on 11 for a few months back in The Mid-'80s was hosted by Morgus, the same host out of New Orleans, but he didn't last long.
The past two Halloweens featured a rotation of hosts: Zacherley in '08, Elvira in '09.
Ron, I don't know. I posted that someone did alert me to the footage, but I've not been updated. It COULD already be up, however. Tapthat2020 may know.
I DO know this: CrowTRobot1313, another fellow "Chiller" nut, has posted VERY faithful recreations of this AND WNEW's "Creature Features" on YouTube®. He took some of my stuff and produced some VERY COOL complete movies. Check his channel out!
True that...but this is the one most of us Tri-State kids remembered the best. And for me, the hand was just so cool!
That plain white background, the blood, and the dead tree..you knew even before the hand would rise that there was something wrong and eerie about the scene.
As a kid the movies scared me a bit, but the opening never did, I thought it was really neat, and I STILL do at 44. :-)
WPIX Channel 11 was a latch-key kid's dream. Remember when Officer Joe got promoted to Cheif Joe to MC the Dick Tracy Show? How about Zacherley? With his "unseen" wife in the coffin. The Old Sailor who MC'd Popeye. Ray Heatherton, (Joey's Dad) the Merry Mailman, Beachcomber Bill, and last but not least Chuck McCann. They made tv fun. Thanks for the memories. Wish someone would combine all those guys on a DVD tribute.

I was born in 1969 so all those guys were before my time. But I grew up in the 70s watching all sorts of classic tv shows & movies on WPIX, so I agree with you. WPIX was a latch-key kids dream.
Boy this takes me back, yeah the editied down from the 70's where the blood flow into a lake, and the hand would rise.Pix brought back the chiller for in 07- 08 as remember hen.
Hey!! I just now found that opening I was speaking of...you can search Chiller Theatre and you'll get to it...Thanks to the person that posted this ol' memory...
title your search Chiller Theatre it's put up by webzotz...when I put your Chiller video clip on, it shows up in the "related videos" box over to the right...
Sorry may not be orig Chiller opening. before this, was another opening of what was called "Chiller Theater". same time slot, same channel,.soundtrack of spooky organ-music w/ flashing scenes of assorted Monster, Spaceman movies...I remember scenes of a film-enlarged lizard trying to get into a cave where Peter Graves and some others were holed up..also scenes of "Attack of the 50-Foot Woman", clips of other classics.. anyway, that was the original "Chiller Theater" opening. 1965 or so....
Born in NYC in 1965, I have no memory of the shows, but have never forgotten this intro -- except I missed or mis-remembered at least a couple details. Never realized there were 6 digits on the hand! Also thought the hand turned into a tree before going back into the ground. How cool is it that we can find this wonderful oddball stuff again?!
I was afraid to look at it back in the day,I would close my eyes and hold my ears until it passed, especially if I was alone, great memories, great stuff!!!
Sometimes my cousin and I would turn the TV back and forth between this and WNEW 5's Creature Features to see what was going on with the other movie.
Also, late night had some of the commercials for the latest horror movies, from "Zombie" to "Dawn Of The Dead" and Chiller would showcase them regularly.
I grew up in Roosevelt, NY and Ioved horror movies; use to stay up and watch them with my father but I would stay OUT of the room and cover my ears until this opening was over!
I love that, but it wasn't the original opening. It was actually the new version that replaced the original that had music from "It came from outer space".
Good times, and all you had to worry about in those days was catching the clap....lol.
This really scared the crap out of me as a kid in the 60s. One movie in particular with some ghastly woman walking around in a graveyard. I insisted my father turn on the light to make sure she wasn't in the backyard one night.
I used to watch a show when I was a kid in the late 70's called "Bugs Bunny presents Boo" with an similiar intro but the hand would slowly come out of the grave and the scene was in black'n'white with the words" Boo" appearing in blood it even had a scarier sound to it. Before and after the movie there would be a looney tunes cartoon. And this show aired on Saturdays in the Rio Grande Valley.
Wow memories man, thanks for posting. I'm 40 now and man this would absolutely scare the crap out of me. The only movie I remember was a movie about a motorcycle gang and one of the guys on it couldn't die. He kept crashing and being all busted up and couldn't die. LOL I was so scared.
@mayamanign >> This is the exact same episode I remember. Every now and then I try to figure out which movie it was by looking at the list but I can never do it. I don't know how many time I've typed the phrase "Chiller Motorcycle Movie" into Google or Dogpile This series used to scare the crap out of me because the only time I ever watched it was when my Mom was working nights and I'd wake up alone in the houe and start flipping channels. I'd be f#*%#ng petrified... LOL

Officer Joe Bolton!!...Well, it was Captain Jack McCarthy who rang "three bells!!...five-thirty"..and then started the 3 stooges show...usually with a PopEye cartoon first, one of the old max Fleischer b+w's...where the characters were always grumbling to themselves...
Boy this brings back memories of when I was kid on channel 11 WPIX and on channel 5 WNEW (Creature Feature) in New York. Both were very scary themes but the Creature Feature was more scary.
This brief segment utterly terrified me as a child, scared me far more than any movie I ever saw. I would run out of the room, hands over my ears when it came on. Thanks for posting this, this has the best audio of any of the versions posted that I've seen.
I love NJ and NYC -- grew up near the area. But -- it doesn't surprise me it was on the NY stations. The whole scene looks like the sides of the roads on Southern NJ -- right before you go over the Delaware Memorial Bridge!
I'm f rom Brooklyn too (born in 1963) and I gotta tell ya...of all the things that scared me as a kid this was the one that scared me the most. I don;t remember a lot of the episodes but I will never forget the opening. It was scarier than the episodes themselves and this opening still scares the hell out of me now. I don't know what was worse, the landscape, the music or that six fingered hand...
Remeber when TVs where really big and sat on the floor? I remember being in my footsy PJs and lying way to close to the TV set (i forget why I was up so late.. maybe my older cousin was babysitting), anyway, I remember this coming on TV and making me scramble away from the TV set.... scared THE HELL out of me.
Hi, Khultan! I grew up in the Bay Area as well, and I know exactly which "Chiller Diller Matinee" you're talking about. I don't know about you, but that opening (and closing) sequence used to scare the absolute shit out of me, and I'm fairly certain it was responsible for my childhood fear of the dark. Haven't seen it since the 70's, but I remember it like it were yesterday (not too fondly, I might add.......LOL!!!)
wow this used to scare me so bad!! Now I'm 40 it still scares meeee aaaaahhhh

This and the commercial for Suspiria. "Roses are red...etc." when the girl brushing her beautiful hair turns around & has a skull face. Freaky!
Amazing what you remember as a kid - it must've had quite an affect on me - and a lot of other folks too, judging from the comments. This was chilly.
guitarbrad 1 year ago
@guitarbrad Not only the Suspiria commercial, but the one they showed for "Beyond The Door" when Juliet Mills goes "whooooo arrree youuuuu" with that twisted face and that sinister laugh.
Chiller Theatre's late night TV spots promoted the horror films of the day as they were current releases or movies that were still in theatres at the time. I also remember their TV spots for "Dawn Of the Dead" and "Zombie" and their famous end lines:
" Noone under 17 will be admitted.."
Shawnster65 1 year ago
@Shawnster65 I just saw the "Beyond The Door" one - man is that freaky! Damn no wonder we kids of the 70s were all screwed up! This show was famous, apparently, for showing commercials of this kind.
We should all get together and make a support group for adults in their 40s who are still a little weirded out by seeing these commercials when we were young.
guitarbrad 1 year ago
@guitarbrad Haha, now that sounds like an idea, a support group for all of us scared by those early childhood memories of horror movie trailers. God knows with films like "Beyond The Door" 1 and "Suspiria", it's not like we don't have a reason to NOT have one....
Shawnster65 1 year ago
@Shawnster65 I watched a few of those horror movie compilation videos that are on YouTube. Many of them brought back memories - as most are from the 70s - but I admit I never saw a lot of them. It just goes to show what a great era the 70s were for horror movies.
guitarbrad 1 year ago

I remember watching these with my dad when I went to visit him in NY back in the 70's! Brings back some great memories! I (like many of the other post-ers) miss those days of schlock horror movie TV!
Maybe its do for yet another come-back?
Thanks again!

Oh my God...
I can't believe that I found this, talk about a blast from the past! This is amazing and just reminds me of how good and simple things were. This used to scare the shit out of me but, man, is it a fond memory of my childhood.
And yes, this usually was scarier than the movie:-).

"Chiller will get you!" My mother used to threaten us with that. How funny. TV was better when it was 'local'.
anonymouscrank 2 years ago
Brooklyn '71 Brother and I would watch this. He would scare the shit out of me by saying 'If you do not do this( give him my cake or bubble toy from the corner 5cent spinner), the Chiller will get you". I did whatever. This damn 6 fingered hand did me in. The movies did nothing. The hand made me give up my cake or my egg cream soda,,,every week. Still freaks me out.
batbitten 2 years ago
Oh man, sounds like he really knew how to scare you to get goodies, lol
But now that you're older, you probably look back and remind yourself that Brooklyn '71 Brother now owes you a TON of egg cream soda and cake and a few of your 5-cent spinner toys back, hehe
Darn that Chiller Hand ;-)

I agree! We laughed about this all thru x-mas. Cheers/ and Happy New years!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to ya' too mate :-) How this clip takes me back..my cousin Jim and I would always flick back and forth between this and WNEW 5's Creature Features. We never broke any channel selectors though, lol

this the same as the Chiller channel on Satellite now?
gr8in83 2 years ago
Grin, no ... this aired for 25 years on WPiX Channel 11 New York, from '61 to '82 ... it's been revived as an annual Halloween Special. It was hosted for 2 years by Zacherley, then went hostless. WPiX is an affiliate of the CW network.
Another similar show that was syndicated on 11 for a few months back in The Mid-'80s was hosted by Morgus, the same host out of New Orleans, but he didn't last long.
The past two Halloweens featured a rotation of hosts: Zacherley in '08, Elvira in '09.

I seriously MISS those days!
