She is beautiful, indeed. But this is not a contest of faces but a display of voices. Although this is not my favorite rendition it is still beautiful. If you don't care for the way their voices blend then move on and haunt some other site. This was posted for people to enjoy, not for them to belittle and denigrate other's opinoins.
What could i say about these "stars"?. The balance among vocal qualitily, technique, theather, charming, performing, that called "angel".
This couple perming the duet "parigi o cara", a moment when we feel the sense a sense of hope facing the tragedy, that´s why the seem so disconected of should i say deeply connected. Il amore e la passione possono parlare putliti, violetti, sempre liberi.
it s not a matter of beauty. SHE is wonderful, he has an enormous voice. But they don't act at all... opera is RECITAR CANTANDO... anyway sutherland in sutherland, clever, sensitive and able to do gorgeous music
The bouquet is ridiculous, they both look like an (old) aunt and nephew who haven't seen each other for a long time but certainly not like two passionate lovers
Joan would have been 61 or 62 here and Pavarotti over 55, amazing sining and it must have been a wonderful history making night at the Met. With the pressure of the evening they have taken 10 years off their actual age. Wonderful
very beautiful performance of both together luciano pavarotti and joan sutherland. they sung perfect, and i love to see the affection between them, this is a very touching moment.
Sicuramente uno dei più bei duetti di Verdi. La mia scena preferita della Traviata dopo l'aria di Violetta alla fine del primo atto, qui in una versione eccelsa!
This scena and duet are one of my favorite moments in all of opera... Right off the bat, the Alfredo/Violetta on that g#... Magic.. The whole thing is magic, really... Especially sung by two such incredible voices.
What I like the most, among other things, about Pavarotti in this role is his perfect diction, and the clarity of his voice makes it just incomparable.
Pavarotti and Sutherland are the only true phenomenons in the world of opera : there is something supernatural in their singing abilities, almost genial, and that is why I love them the most, even though I respect some other opera singers, but they are too human for my taste.
Well said, castorp1981. So true. These two, plus Samuel Ramey, are the 3 voices sent from heaven. Everybody else just sounds dull by comparison. The pinnacle of Bel Canto. Certified intergalactic!!
Last time I checked physical beauty as not correlation to beautiful singing. TenorTone What's your excuse I wonder? I am referring to your callous comment and exemplified stupidity!
The Pav-Sutherland rendition of Parigi, o cara is unmatched... NO ONE can touch them here. They voices were made for one another. Looks mean NOTHING, age means NOTHING ... their voices are so perfect, I see only beauty. The 2 greatest of ALL TIME.
Couldn't agree more. They both sang this duetto with a tenderness and depth that has yet to be either matched or surpassed. The world owes them both a debt of gratitude for their 30-year partnership.
When they sing this duet, my heart skips a beat. The thing I've always loved about Pav was the urgency in his voice. There is yet to this day, a tenor that can project the urgency Pav does. He didn't have to jump through hoops, contort his face or scream to make you feel. It came so natural to him. And I've yet to hear a soprano that blends as perfectly with him as Dame Joan. Both, marvels, their entire singing careers.
Yes, we owe them our gratitude and highest esteem. They are perfection.
Oh I do too. I just get goosebumps listening to them. They are thrilling together. In all of opera, there has never been 2 voices that fit so perfectly as these. IMO, they were destined to sing together. Of course, each of them, the very TOP of their professions, but together? Heaven, pure Heaven! Like castorp1981 said below - supernatural!
To the person who disparaged La Stupenda's personal appearance: her beauty - and she IS beautiful - is from the soul. She is a very great artist and deserves our respect and homage.
She was never beautiful, you know, and she is 61 years old in this video. People in general don't expect a 61-year-old person to be really beautiful and, mind you, Opera doesn't need it. What we need is true commitment, technical ability and dedication to Art, and these Sutherland gave us for 43 years. And, btw, she moves well through the stage, so her appearance is no problem at all. Of course we love Moffos and Netrebkos, but beauty is just a "plus", not a requirement.

Horribly wooden and visually alarming - but divine musically.
They shine bright still.

Of course Pavarotti will always be the most well-known supertenor of all time, but his diction in this is unbelievably clear and bright.
