I don't think it's all that insensitive to joke about Cobain's death. He always went out of his way to express disgust for the mainstream music fans who he knew worshipped him, and I think that such a violent suicide was partially meant as the ultimate act of fan alienation - basically telling them that he'd rather obliterate himself than play for them. It was a big, overblown death that he wanted people to dwell on, and I think that nothing's more deserving of ridicule than extreme self-pity.

Kurt was a huge fan of akward humor. When nirvana was doing their in utero tour they had bobcat goldthwait open for them. In chicago bobcat made a joke about michael jordan father who had been recently killed. I think bob said "you know for 100 million a year I would shoot my own father in the head." To which the crowd booed and security was pissed. The only smiling face he saw was kurt. Kurt simply said "I cant believe you said that." The video is on youtube somewhere if you look for it.
