Of course there haven't always been ads playing at the start of videos, but as soon as the internet became a commercial entity, there had to be some sort of revenue stream. If YouTube doesn't get money from somewhere, it won't run. Ads in the past might have been off to the side that you've had the option to click on, but that just doesn't make enough money, so they've started doing it this way.
