I remember this ad like it was last week. I even stayed here thanks to this ad. Small room but, nice place. As I recall it was $43 per person(which was the fine print) "based on 2x occupancy" meaning it cost a tad more single. These ads ran nationally, in prime time, and this hotel for a time was associated well with this song. Had a travel agent book it, it was that long ago(no internet yet).
I remember seeing this commercial. The right-most lady on the phone at about 15-16 sec resembled a classmate, especially as she nods her head. I also remember still seeing this commercial after some of those quickly-glanced shows closed.
I used to be a flight attendant back in the late 90's and little did I know watching this commercial as a young kid on WPIX during cartoons that I would later bag a hot Texas flight attendant at the Lullaby of Broadway.
I would like to know if any new yorkers out there remember the rubella umbrella commercial with the two umbrellas floating down the street in Manhattan telling everyone to get your vaccine
I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a great hotel to stay at and was the toast of Broadway. And, my best BFF Addie and I had the times of our lives. Love you too RobartsKenalcon!
@tzaremba958 The next time we're in NYC together, we'll get one of their BEST suites....because WE CAN BOTH AFFORD IT, THERE OR AT ONE OF THE HILTONS!

It was 27 yrs ago today my BFF Madge and I stayed at The Milford Plaza and had the time of our life!!! We were young, pretty and carefree!!! I would do anything to have those days back. Love Ya Madge!!!
aah shit!!! this used to play all the time on 5 11 and 9!!! watchin wwf late nite! yankees games and cartoons!!!! channel9 movies!!! im 32 now and this throws me back!!!!
First trip to New York - stayed at Milford Plaza 1983 - Of all my vacations, including L.A., San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, San Antonio, Santa Fe, Edinburgh Scotland, London, Prague - my stay at the M P was the most fun! I hear it was recently remodeled, think I'll visit again soon!
Just like everyone else commenting here, I remember this from when I was a kid with my back and white TV. As an adult I now walk past it everyday on my way to work. So surreal!!! NY is probably in better shape than it was in the 80's, but I can't help but think of that time as the "good ol' days".
Room, cocktail, dinner, AND breakfast all for $43 dollars per person? Wow, what a bargain. Gotta love the 80's. Now a days 43 dollars barely get you and a date into a movie.
All I want to know... has anyone put one of those "PIX! PIX! PIX! PIX PIX PIX PIX PIX PIX!" child-on-the-phone-directing-video-game-shots things that would run during those incredibly bargain-basement Thor cartoons? (C'mon, I know some of you know what the hell I'm talking about...)
@773SleepyHollow I loved that shit dude!!! I still bring it up to people. I live in texas now and when i meet fellow new yorkers ill bring stuff like the PIXIXIXIXIX stuff!!! classic. what about Romper Room?!?!
@773SleepyHollow I remember that. I remember they used to give a prize for how good you did at the end. There was this kid who didn't hit one target, and the speaker paused and was like "ahhh well timmy," translated "christ kid, you suck!" I felt bad for the kid haha
This commercial mentions Broadway, but fails to mention its proximity to the countless XXX establishments that existed in the area during those days...LOL
Wow - growing up in southwestern Connecticut in the late 80's/early 90's, I saw this commercial countless times; a blast from the past for sure. Thank goodness for youtube for bringing back such memories.
and they say time travel isn't possible, the right drugs, the right video, some star trek in there, monster movies, the quiet man, babes in toyland, miracle on 34th st
I remember that was in one of the worst sections of manhattan, at that time. The ad always made it look spiffy, but anyone who booked a stay there without knowing the area would have been scared, let me tell you...
Was this commercial ever shown on TV stations outside of NYC? It's a great classic commercial from my early 80s youth, but what was the point of pitching a Manhattan hotel to people who already lived in the city (and surrounding areas)?
I remember this commercial...used to see it all the time on WCBS between their morning game shows, but took me years to find out this was actually a parody of a famous show tune! LOL
i remember seeing this random times after wwf or the muphet babies went to a commercial.... i missed those times especially that Cats on broadway commercial
I lived in Brooklyn and saw this commercial hundreds of times. What I couldnt understand is why they were advertising their hotel in manhattan to brooklynites. Why go through the expense of renting a motel room when Broadway was a short subway ride there? Didnt this commercial air to out of towners in their home states?
Because it ran on Channels 5, 9, and 11 which were also seen upstate, South Jersey, and in Pennsylvania. I grew up in the Poconos and saw this all the time. As a child I always wondered why they advertised for "Beautiful Mount Airy Lodge" which was only a few miles away, not realizing it was for people who lived closer to the city.
As a kid I saw this commercial about a thousand times. I used to imagine that if you phoned the hotel all you would hear is "...is the Milford Plaza!" and then they'd hang up. Everyone else on the staff seems quite good at their jobs, but those have to be the worst three telephone receptionists I've ever seen.
i wonder what those two cooks were cooking in those flaming hot pans? i hope they didn't get burned. the bald cook looks like he took a break from Annie. lol
@vidssc That's very true, though remember video cameras back then were a bit cumbersome to carry around, lol. And it wasn't until the '90s that most people had their own video cameras anyway.
Dennis Miller once joked on SNL about this place..."Yeah, $59 for a room in Manhattan and you get theater tickets too. What, did I just get hit in the head with a Wrecking Ball?!"
Couldn't agree with you more, but then again $299 a night today is a steal compared to places like the Waldorf et al.
Yeah, I remember this spot! :) I'll never forget it... ("And in the center of it all, it's the MILFORD PLAZA!") Reminds me of NYC in the good days, when I was growing up in BK (our damn t.v. was still black and white, and we had a fucked-up antenna on it! whachu' young'n's know about that?! NOT A DAMN THING!). And when Channel 9 & 11 was still...GOOD! Before it sold out and went corporate (fucking UPN! Now CW & MyNetwork TV! What the FUCK! It's HORRIBLE today, man!)
@BrooklynEagle If i could give you all the thumbs up in the world for all you said there, I would. NYC TV from 20 years and earlier will always be good times. 3 big independents and even the other 3 affiilated networks even did stuff like movies whenever they could! 4:30 MOVIE on WABC and DRIVE IN MOVIE on WNEW FOR. THE. WIN.
Lol! I used to like this commercial. They always looked like they were having a lot more fun than the section of the NYC I was living. I wanted to stay in the hotel as a kid...lol
The worse thing is that the jingle was so stuck in my head when I heard it when it was in the early 80s was during some sporting event, as a child I had no idea what event it was, but during each commerical break they aired this commerical. If anyone remembers the sporting event, please tell me.

THANK YOU for posting this commercial! I remember it airing daily on "ABC World News This Morning", along with the "Am I Blue" commercial for Philip's Milk Of Magnesia.
I've you watched New York-area television stations in the mid-1980s, this song was burned into your consciousness (and even deeper than that - that's how often this aired!).
However, it does make you want to see the staff at this hotel break out in song as you walk into the lobby. Or is it just me?
This commercial is circa 1984(estimate). There's a clip advertising the play Dreamgirls. Needless to say,pre-Cosby Show,Phylicia Ayers Allen was doing the play.
Yeah, I remember this ad!
This ad was designed to run for YEARS on local New York stations {with frequent "updates" on their latest rates, of course}...these days, it's "out of date".
Goodness! This brings back so many memories as a kid! Especially, when I stayed home from school. I remember thinking how I wanted to go there and see them sing and dance like the commercial.
canesurf- the girls at the front desk hair was kinda giving off the impression to the television viewer of their hotel is of classy 5 star hotels from the 1940's -50's BIG on CLASS ERA..you know as if they are classier than all.I said the same thing about her hair in the early 1980's...effective marketing if you ask me. I always wanted to go there.
Love this commercial. Growing up i remember seeing this on saturday mornings. BTW, $49 a day? I stayed in room 2632 last year for 3 nights and it cost over $600!!!!"The lullaby of broadway!"
Holy crap, I remember they used to play this commercial OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. I hated it! haha

The commercials are still worth watching all day. I've spent whole days copying old videos to DVD. Nostalgia is so worth wasting time for!

Ahhh, WPIX. Memories! I can't believe its one of those My TV Networks now, though I haven't lived in a WPIX viewing area in 2 1/2 years. So sad!

I remember that comercial so vividly...I dont know why...maybe the catchy jingle...must be 23 years old
catgumart 3 years ago
Yep its the catchy jingle and the broadway like appearance.
PurpleinLA 3 years ago
That's $98 per night, factoring in inflation-double that at best in 2008
Factoring in price gouging which is the norm anywhere nowadays and $600 seems about right.
ohso41 3 years ago
they don't make ads like that any more...

canesurf 3 years ago 3
canesurf- the girls at the front desk hair was kinda giving off the impression to the television viewer of their hotel is of classy 5 star hotels from the 1940's -50's BIG on CLASS ERA..you know as if they are classier than all.I said the same thing about her hair in the early 1980's...effective marketing if you ask me. I always wanted to go there.

WNYW-TV (FOX 5) has played this commercial during the late 80s and early-mid 90s. Classy.
It's definitely NOT the prince today. 2008 of corse.
