    Can anyone here tell me WHY on earth you'd stretch before you run a marathon? If you've got muscle tightness, this should have been resolved MONTHS before the competition. Its far too late to bother with this just minutes before the race.

    "We track down experts" - last time I visited their site, the only thing you needed to do to be registered as an expert was to sign in, and click "expert". There. You're an expert.

  • Stretching is good before and aftter, but I think the important thing that is missed is that static streching should be done after you warm up. I'm a marathon runner and I jump rope or do running in place etc, 5 - 10mins or so to get the heart rate up and then stretch. Also spend the time after the run to stretch properly. Technique is important, hit the major muscle groups and your body will thank you later.

  • These stretches are WRONG! Bending over and touching tour toes stretches your HAMSTRING on the back of the thigh...not your calves! Come on man...

  • Some people complain that you won't do good if you stretch before you race but it's the opposite trust me if you don't stretch your leg feels uncomftorable during the race.

  • Also, don't forget to stretch your upper body too (arms, torso, shoulders, and neck).

    They get a good workout too when you run also. If you're stiff in the upper body you won't run as good and get what they call a "stitch" to the side of your ribcage (a cramp that can occur while running if not properly stretching the upper body as well).

  • stretching cold like that can lead to injury. Don't stretch cold muscles or they will tear. Warm your muscles up slowly before stretching. Also, be sure to stretch AFTER your excercise too! ...and ice inflamed tissue after long runs.

  • Great audio... what microphone/camera did you use? Most of the stretching vids I've seen on here have horrendous audio. Nice to see stretches you don't need a wall or post for - but can do in the middle of nowhere.
