Can he sing? Can he play? Ian is a MUSICIAN and will be remembered long after he's gone. We won't hear anything like this ever again! Love you Aqualung!!!!
Ian commented on how he could work out all his "issues"...e.g. anger, disappointment in people or institutions, etc. on paper and stage. The only audience I have is ...lol, well, hello? Is anybody there?.....I'm not that pissed...just think he shouldn't sing ...period. (Check out the 2012 classic rock groups getting back together to tour and pull the U2 mother loads from us babys! NOTHING to do with ART. THEY ARE BUSINESS FIGURES, NOT ARTISTS.) LOL, I'm pissed again.
Hi ganthony1, sounds like your bitter, maybe you should not have put him on such a high pedestal....the difference between you and him is he's happy and your not. If people want to waste $200 on a ticket to see any of these fossilized bands from the 60s, well then I hope it makes them happy. " It's not easy singing sad songs".....Tull
@mikepa67 Your right. I agree. I just put him too high a pedestal. I didn't have a mom or dad that i looked up too. Or a religious figure, or a friend, or another older adult who really influenced me. On the issue of frequency and price to see my "dead", unharmonizable throat strained hero, rare. Solo or with Jethro Tull though the prices are not outlandish to his credit...commensurate to NO VOICE.
@mikepa67 And one more thing......he, Ian Anderson had a lot of his own misanthropic, bitter, deep seated cynical attitudes well documented....and in his driven, even depressed states (again pretty well accepted...he's human), he wrote his best music in many peoples opinion. So, I just am a decade behind the growth. And I have no reason for it...I am happly married with two successful boys ...I am in the 5% club...Ian's in the 1% club...that's what pisses me off.
I know Ian Anderson on the road. He can be biting and brutal with 'the help' and all their "limitations". He's a tight wired, genius. I can relate...but, at the end of the day, he made plenty of fiat...good for him...so have I...so no jealously of similar UINW....but he is making money with a voice that is no longer. Sad, he knows better thant that and better than the weak consumers he's unnecessarily stolen from....
And did I say, ..and I mean this with all the misanthropia moxie Ian used to quickly, pointed land on his percieved, or real enemies... Ian Anderson is cheating, stealing...everytime he sings for profit. He can't. I have no empathy, as he wouldn't or doesn't have on others with "limitations". It is cheating like his neighbors who shag neighbors that his business wife and he laugh at...like the old man's cackle. It is not "Lee Marvin" like to tough it out...when you can barely sing. Quit.
He can talk about his neighbor shagging a friend's wife while he helps the little old lady across the street. But he cheated us in his calculated, recalculations of all he wanted to be and be remember as in the music business. ....And now, for sure, he will win some dubious, but recognizable music, music charity award! Perception is all this world is....today.
But he did. He ends up just like so many others, look at the long term prospects and acquisce just like all the weak, ill informed or morally bent people he sung about for profit. Go figure? And I will express my opinion just like he USED TO boldly, confrontationally in his early bolder and dare I say, more alive, wiser years. Got the gold watch...I sure do...but I still have a fire he lost in my business world.
It's a shame...in my humble opinion, my "hero" lost some of his backbone along the way with the American Flag on cars, post-911 thing; the I really don't like rock and roll thing; the "I apologize" thing after they banned Tull. I NEVER thought my hero, Mr. Ian Anderson, of strong Scottish blood, of pushed back Fame but welcoming upper net worth wealth would yield like a weak politician.
Hey Ben... I can always count on your uploads to make my day. Being A NY Met Fan and The Season Is Now Over...... I need my Daily Dose Of Tullynol Favorites.
What Ian reminds me of is Fagin/Ron Moody in "Oliver!" The tattered, knee length coat, fingerless glove, misc. dangling scarves, etc.. The costume. I'd get such a kick out of it if he'd just break out & start singing "You've Got To Pick a Pocket or Two"!
Is it just me, or does anyone else imagine Ian Anderson on a giant hill, green with life, on one leg playing his flute, with the bodies of his adversaries lying in the field below him? I mean, he plays his flute in the perfect stance for kicking people in the throat...without missing a beat...? Right? :)
There are multitudes of excellent musicians that play music well , and there are even more elevated musicians to where instead of playing music - music plays them -
but with Jethro Tull , music BECOMES them !
I saw them do this in Salt Lake City 1971 and not before, or since , have I ever seen the stage performance of a band become almost a supernatural event , to where the spirit God of Music BECAME Jethro Tull !
The spirits of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven sat in the audience and cheered !
Jethro Tull was the 1st Major concert that I saw in 1970, the back up band was a little know group - the Eagles. since that time I have seen all of the top groups of the day, none of them (in my opinion) has ever been able to top that show. That night Tull presented more than just a concert, they put on a real show, complete with Scuba divers et el.
Thank you, This is my favorite Tull song and one of my favorite songs in general. This is the best live version I have heard. I hate that video clip where he just sings the first verse and then goes into another song... MAJOR DISLIKE!!! lol!
