so should i buy the noki ae52 by taking your word that its music quality is as good as nokia 5800.i mean to say will i get almost ipod like music quality in it and how does it fare against nokia 5630.and does nokia e52 support animated icons and animated themes.

I'm looking to get the E52, because of the keyboard. However I have a few uncertainties about it.

Will it have VoIP/SIP support in order to use with a generic VoIP operator? It's not listed in Nokia's official list of supported phones.

Is it possible to enable a contact bar on the home screen like on the 5630/5800 where you can have pictures attached to people and instant messages from different messaging systems funneled into each contact?

I have the e52. Gps is good if you are outside. And there is msn on it

No its not. One of the few differences actually. In fact its the only software one I can think of outside the keyboard stuff.

Hey Mr. R, at minute 9:15 I saw a "messenger" application, i have to ask, Is that a windows live messenger application?, I mean, official, and if it is, How good it is?

I have a nokia N82 and I have never, never downloaded it, and I say never because I wanted it, but I couldn't find it on the download application with any gsm card, and boy, I kinda collect them! (I do have a lot from several parts of the globe)

Yes it is. Yes it's official. I haven't used it extensively, but it works well from what I saw. Messenger roll out on Nokia devices is very market dependent.

Mixture. In this case it's a loan device (i.e. it goes back one it has been reviewed). I'm seriously considering buying on of these for myself though.

hi Rafe, thats a great review.but can you clear my doubt. i want to know that whether this phone gives a decent music through headphones bcoz i am confused to choose between nokia 5800 and nokia e52. my criteria of a phone are good messaging, menu transitions, gaming, email, excellent or very good music, internet browsing and good gps. what do you suggest. i am a little bit attracted towards the nokia e52 but doubt its audio quality. can you tell how it stands with 5800 and other xm devices

Music is very good. I'd say very similar to 5800 when on headphones. It only has a mono speaker, whereas 5800 has stereo speakers... but really music through loud speakers of phone is never going to be that great. I think the E52 has better messaging, has N-Gage (5800 does not), and as you can see in video E55 does have transitions. But it does have a lower resolution screen.

Yes it does. There's a light round the inner part of the D-pad. It also functions as a breathing light.

Beautiful review Rafe :). You really did manage to squeeze as much info as you can in a 10 minute video, heh.

My interests are slowly gearing towards Android or WinMo phones as their interface appear much more sleek and stylish. However, this phone (and review) made me think twice and take a second gander at s60 once more.

I have never used a half qwerty before, but I am quite use to t9. Therefore, I think that the adjustment will be no problem.

The half-QWERTY does take some getting use to, but I think that's true of any keyboard. The predictive stuff does have problems with proper names (and stuff not in the dictionary), but it will learn those as it goes. So, for example, once you have entered your own name once you're OK.

And yes the switch from T9 would be easier. The downside is your fingers need to train themselves to treat it as QWERTY (e.g. a is not the top middle key).

E72 will have similar software to E52, but with a few nice hardware extras like the 5.0 mp camera and optical d-pad. Still the E55 bodes very well for the E72 in my opinion.... and I guess I would choose an E71 for those extras. Cost / benefit of course - probably means E52 / E55 has superior value for many.

The great value of the E52/E55 makes them very compelling, but after using the E71 and E90 so long makes it very hard to go back to numeric keypads as evidenced by my brief stint with the N86, and Half-Qwerty isn't my cup of tea, so the E72 will be next.
