Fabulous: My Dad played trumpet for Rudy for several years until Rudy went to Hollywood to stay. Then Dad moved on the Fred Waring. Dad used to drive one of Rudy's V16 Cadillacs up to the cottage in Maine, where the whole band would enjoy cruising around in the Chris Craft (32 foot cabin cruiser). This was in the depths of the Depression.
@EricJamesHanson My mom recalls that once a year Vallee would have his band up to the cottage in Maine, no kids allowed, for some R&R. They did play music, as well as water polo, water skiing, and more. It's my grandfather's work you hear on the drums on this recording. So, EricJamesHanson, your dad and my granddad knew each other! :)
@polaroidsky I think I did. Search under "Rudy Vallee and his Connecticut Yankees - Deep Night (1929)." The first 2 minutes are strictly instrumental, but when he starts singing it's exactly like the one used in BONNIE AND CLYDE.

This version is good but the 1929 version is better, in my opinion.

You are probabaly referring to his original 1929 version. Search IWz5LbRyRHw to find it on YT.

Wasn't there an earlier, slower, more mysterious version by Rudy Vallee?

@billyguns2 you mean the version heard in the opening credits to BONNIE AND CLYDE? I'm looking for that, too.

@musicaltheatergeek79 : Perfect, thank you very much! By the way, what did you think of the movie?

@polaroidsky I loved it. It's one of my top ten. I thought it was robbed of Best Picture, as was Faye Dunaway for Best Actress.
