  • I just heard about her last month, how much praise she gets for her vocal ability and I must say I wanna study her legacy, I really like this piece, I would definitely study opera

  • this is sooooo beautiful..........

  • How wonderful to read what you say about your mom singing in the chorus with Dame Joan in '65.

When I was in my late teens and I listened to Sutherland incessantly, a fellow singer at conservatory said..you'll change your tastes in time. It's 35 years later...and I never have. I love so many of the greats and listen to them all, but in my opinion Joan and Caruso are the two greatest voices ever.

  • @canpete1 Lord Harewood says the same almost about Joan and Caruso in the foreward to one of the biographies on Joan

  • @timsuffolk Very interesting indeed. Thank you for letting me know!

  • Whats that very last note?!

  • @dappling484 A D6.

  • escuchenla interpretando a la reina d ela noche en la flauta magica...es sencillamente ESTUPENDA

  • love love love love her...really... and definitely

  • More than human, she was La Stupenda!!!!

When did she recorded this aria? Late 60s? Early 70s?

    Thanks for posting!

  • @yukio84 This excerpt comes from a 1963 Bell Telephone Hour broadcast. They don't have stuff like this on mainstream TV channels anymore. *Sigh*

  • Michael Kirwan says : a wonderful, wonderful voice.

  • Ohhh, I have the cd of the opera but I haven´t listened to it more than a couple of times, and that was some time ago, so I didn´t realize this aria was missing. I agree it is a pity :).

  • I have been a massive fan of Dame Joan since I was 4 years old. I would lie on the carpet in the sitting room and listen to her for hours. My favourite at that time was her Command Performance that she did for Queen Elizabeth.

  • @oprah999 Your comment is what is ridiculous, as it shows a profound ignorance of what is going on in this video. This was filmed in the 60's, when this style of production was the norm.

  • Of course the staging of this seems rather ridiculous now, but it is fiendishly difficult to sing, let alone sing well. Dame Joan pulls it off sensationally, as she did consistently throughout her career.

  • wow. just wow! i love joan! it's a shame callas din't get a chance to sing this piece. it would've been great to hear her sing this.!

  • @tripleaxell Actually, Maria Callas did sing Puritani :)

  • @YaelBerman i know, i meant she did'nt sing this aria, it could have been wonderful to hear her sing this. =)

  • @tripleaxell

this aria would be WAY too high for callas

  • @raigekimar

Lol how do you figure? Callas recorded I Puritani under Tullio Serafin:)

  • @raigekimaru Actually this VERY poor cabaletta was written for Malibran, a mezzo ! But I assume such a misconception of yours is nothing but a detail when compared to your acute and wide-ranging operatic culture...

  • @JB63operaphile

was it written in this key? if so, than yes, it would be way too high.

  • this is the most bestest version of Ah Sento of course!

  • Every singer should look to Joan Sutherland for inspiration, Viva La Stupenda!

  • Saw Dame Joan in 1963 sing this LIVE in Phila. Of course she brought down the house!

  • Jesus Christ.....this can break a crystal.

  • A wonderful voice that will be supremely missed. Joan Sutherland sung in I Puritani at Glyndebourne in 1960. A truly stellar artist.

  • I would have wished this excerpt could've been played at Joan's memorial service at the Sydney Opera House - it was her at her very best. Instead, the powers that be relied on her performances in Sydney in the late 70s & 80s which on any criteria were sub-standard, compared with her outstanding singing in the 60s & early 70s.

  • La Stupenda! How I wish I could see her perform for the last time. RIP, Dame Joan Sutherland.

  • @oprah999

We don't learn and grow by discovering the faults of others, we learn and grow by discovering our own. I'm sure you have much to discover.

  • @oprah999 If you have even taken time to listen to the remarks regarding the whole 'passport incident', which i am sure that you havn't, you will know that she is simply stating facts. it wasn't at all meant to be malicious, like you are implying. I am a product of Australia (though recently moved to NZ), and i can tell you that the Chinesse/Indian poulation is huge, and i infact do feel that if i was interviewed for a passport by an Imigrant, i think i would react the same way too. Let her rest

  • My mother was one of the chorus singers who sang with Dame. Joan when she did her 1965 tour of Australia with Pavarotti. Mum, who was a huge supporter of the wonderfull Dame. Joan, told me how Lucia's High E Flat just drowned the room with sound. i didn't really appreciate opera until i got older when my mother and i saw her in her signature role, Lucia, at the sydney opera house in the early 80's. I have never forgotten, and since that day i have aquired the taste! RIP La Stupenda

  • @MaddameButterfly504 My Mother immigrated to the USA and I grew up here. She was a singer and all my chldhood memories are of listening to the great voices of all time. When Joan Sutherland came out, Mom was thrilled that she was from Australia and we listened to her constantly. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • @MaddameButterfly504

This is a stunning performance and I heard Joan on stage and she destroyed

orchestra choruses and fellow solists with her Dbs, Ds and Eb's. One of

    the glories of opera.

    Regards-John

  • that was.... just wonderful. :'D

  • @oprah999 You have so upset me. It's people like you, ignorant and dickheaded who make me wish that we didn't have to share the likes of Dame. Joan with the world. shame on you!

  • Lovely Sutherland...

  • @bobbphysics.... (smacks lips) DUMB! go to bed!

  • BRAVA

  • @oprah999 Joan Sutherland was known for being very warm with her colleagues, fans, other musicians and the people who helped her to get to where she got, and was known in not partaking in the gossip which others were rumoured to have in engaged in. She made a racist comment in the heat of the moment of which I do not approve and which she apologised for and praised the Chinese community in Australia. We all make mistakes and Joan apologised for hers. Give her a little respect.

  • @BenazirRokira1993

I heard the comment on a news clip and it didn't really sound like it had racist intent. I think people working in the position she was referring to were just usually chinese, it didn't sound to me like she really had anything against the race as a whole.

  • I saw Sutherland many times during her prime and even though an ardent Callas worshipper I was always overwhelmed by the enormity and beauty of Dame Jone's voice. It is not possible to appreciate it via recordings because it's physicality could only be experienced in person: the sound was so huge, warm and creamy that one could not locate it's origin on the stage; it seemed to envelope the listener from every part of the house (Met. Opera) and in the "stupendous" moment to transcend criticism.

  • Bella diva, piu bella qui Callas!!!

  • @oprah99 The most intemperate remark I've ever read on the Internet. Shame on you!

  • The greatest of all women.

  • @MrFalconford well SAID .WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE. . WAS WAS SAD TO HEAR OF HER DEATH. CAN ANYONE REPLACE HER? I DONT THINK SO

  • a diva is always a diva, never a lil chick

  • @oprah999 Give us a break! It's not as if she were a member of the Ku Klux Klan!!

  • @oprah999 Your comments are more repulsive than anything I every heard her say. How many millions of lives have you enriched?

  • She looks quite lovely in this video. And her voice is without peer, of course.

  • @ you evil evil, totally evil person, the world will be better without you. Joan Sutherland was liked and loved by almost everyone, read the comments from everyone who knew her. You are a disgrace to the world of opera................but she will be remembered long after you are dead, which hopefully will be soon

  • RIP

  • @oprah999 how totally uncalled for. I hope people show you more respect when you pass.

  • SON OF A *****

    UNREAL

I don't think another singer like her will exist during my lifetime and I'm 17.

"Ichabod," it was said when the ark of the covenant was taken - the glory of Israel is gone.

Opera has lost its arc of the covenant

  • @oprah999

You are on the wrong page. Screw off.

  • Ho avuto la fortuna di sentirla dal vivo. Cantante immensa e forse ineguagliabile.

    Ciao stupenda!

  • In memorian (1926- 2010) I love you "La Stupenda" ...

  • R.I.P "la Stupenda"

  • Just Divine. We'll miss you, Stupenda, one of the greatest voices of XXth century.

  • God bless her...She sure could sing...just so long as no one cared what the words were.

  • She's not gone, S=she's singing for the Lord now in that great opera house in the sky.

  • What a pleasure watching this. I've been listening to her all day, many things I

hadn't heard. R,I.P. Joan. We'll always have you.

  • Rest in peace, La Stupenda!!!

  • Wspaniale

  • wielki talent. dobrze, ze odkryty i ze mozna sie nim bylo cieszyc

  • wake up opera fans! THIS is what real opera is about. no bizarre modern interpretations, pretty young singers or odd acrobatic performances can make up for the beauty of the human voice which they compromise in the process. better to go to an opera house pitch black and hear beautiful, perfectly produced voices than see the most visually appealing opera in the world with mediocre singing. Dame Joan Sutherland is the epitome of the beauty of the human voice. Rest in Peace La Stupenda.

  • A great career you made millions very happy. RIP.

  • ΚΑλό ταξίδι!!!

  • Joan, you were a great gift to us. At least we still have your music.

  • Beautiful.

  • Rest in peace xxxx love u ...always

  • BRAVA !

    PERECT!

ONE OF THE LAST REAL SOPRANOS AND ARTISTS ...

    R.I.P.

  • All I can do in the face of such ridiculous talent is laugh! RIP Dame Joan, I wish I could have seen you.

  • The true greatness of this gifted, talented woman was a magnificent gift to the world.

    Grazie, La Stupenda!

  • La Stupenda, Your nurturing of young artists will only insure that the opera in it's purest form will be preserved. The recordings will always serve as a testament or a barometer of what is true art.I have missed you for 20 years, and the rest of my life...

    Ricardo Coronado

  • RIP La Stupenda!

  • One of the voices of an era and a master of bel canto...she will be greatly missed!

  • RIP Dame Joan, it's the end of an era

  • RIP Joan!

  • Thank You.

  • Rest in peace, Dame Joan ♥

  • Thank you, Dame Joan, may you sing among the angels now.

  • Breathtaking!

  • Thank God we have these jewels that show proof to the amazing gifts of this woman!!

  • Rest in Peace, Dame Sutherland. The world is never the same without you :'-(

  • Undeniably one of the greatest opera singers of her generation. R.I.P La Stupenda!

  • Rest in Peace Joan, thank you for your art.

  • I don't get it. Why was this considered too difficult to perform? Is it that last note at the end? What makes this more difficult to sing than other operas?

My newb-ness aside, her voice is lovely. It's a pity I've only just heard of her.

    R.I.P. Mme. Sutherland.

  • @sciamhach At that TIME it was considered too difficult, the same way that some of the pieces of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven were considered too difficult at that time. The skill set of singers and musicians of today far exceeds the skills and abilities of singers from 175 years ago. Some pieces that are today considered standards that every classical musician should know at the bare minimum, were considered far beyond the reach of all but the best musicians in their day.

  • Mme. Joan Sutherland.... sad you have just left this world but Im thankful for that wonderful voice of yours and absolute beautiful performances, you'll be forever: La Stupenda... May you rest in peace

  • @bobbphysics and you are tacky enough to make this comment as people are leaving their respects? You might prefer one to the other, but in terms of timing you are utterly tone deaf.

  • @victrola2007 I've only heard the "too difficult" explanation in this video. As I understand it, Bellini wrote this aria because the powers that be wanted a big show stopper for the soprano and, by GOD, he gave them one! Rest in peace, dear Joan and thank you

  • @bobbphysics better at what? Maria Callas NEVER sang this aria. Try to think of two great, DIFFERENT singers as colours. Now, is red better than blue?

  • If we live for a thousand years, we'll never see - or hear - her like again. Thanks for leaving us with so much.

  • R.I.P La Stupenda. You were a one-off voice and we will never forget your triumphant performances at the Sydney Opera House. You inspired a generation of young singers and were one one of the greatest ambassadors Australia has had. We are so proud of you and the voice you shared with the world.

  • it salvages me from clinical depression

  • bloody beauty Joanie!

  • @spenzur..... Lol it's Italian for wonderful.

  • What is the name of this aria (for iTunes purposes)?

    Thanks! =]

  • lol

  • Could someone explain why she is called ''la stupenda''? It reminds me of stupid, but why would people call her stupid? :P

  • @spenzur La Stupenda translates from Italian as The Stupendous One... Sutherland, Callas, Pavoratti and Corelli were the only ones I can think of who were given high honouring titles

  • @dangmills Thanks for the answer :D

  • @dangmills Caballe was given the title La Superba....

  • @dangmills what were corelli's and pavarotti's??

  • @FeelinMinnesota Corelli's "Prince of Tenors" & Pavarotti's "King of C's & D's"

  • @dangmills

Prince of Tenors? Corelli should be the Emperor of tenors

  • @raigekimaru He should be... he's the only tenor I know who sings his entire range (E2- C5) in chest voice... all the others use their head voice (which is NOT falsetto)

  • @dangmills

Corelli can sing E2?! that's as low as me and I'm a bass-baritone!

  • E2 --> C3--> Middle C4 --> C5 (he probably can still sing it, he was a baritone, but he can't belt it out)

  • @raigekimaru I haven't listened to too much Corelli, but keep in mind that just because he could "hit" an E2 doesn't mean that it was within his 'singable range'. If the timbre of his voice was essentially that of a tenor's, then he probably couldn't have legitimately sung or sustained an E2 - because that's below even a baritone's tessitura.

There is a huge difference between a person's actual RANGE, and the *TESSITURA* in which their voice can comfortably sit/sing. :)

  • So many people today are hung up on the number of notes within a person's vocal range - which no one seems to have been preoccupied with in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic or early Modern periods. They were much more concerned about the qualities, shades and nuances in a singer's voice - no doubt because they also knew the staggering difference between "range" and "tessitura" (which is LOST on most people today).

  • @dangmills gedda was the king of D's. But yes pavarotti's C's are unbeatable.

  • La voix et le chant sont beaux. Bon. Mais quel caramantran anglo-saxon! et ces grimaces! Déjà qu'elle n'est pas belle...

  • Comment removed

  • what an ugly woman....

  • @diaTeri

this is opera darling. it's not the pop industry where you sell by being hot, you need talent to sell in this business, and Dame Joan Sutherland had more than anyone else =)

  • @diaTeri

How did you find your way into this forum?...you should go back to listening to Lady Gaga and Hanna Montanna
