I just heard about her last month, how much praise she gets for her vocal ability and I must say I wanna study her legacy, I really like this piece, I would definitely study opera
How wonderful to read what you say about your mom singing in the chorus with Dame Joan in '65.
When I was in my late teens and I listened to Sutherland incessantly, a fellow singer at conservatory said..you'll change your tastes in time. It's 35 years later...and I never have. I love so many of the greats and listen to them all, but in my opinion Joan and Caruso are the two greatest voices ever.
Ohhh, I have the cd of the opera but I haven´t listened to it more than a couple of times, and that was some time ago, so I didn´t realize this aria was missing. I agree it is a pity :).
I have been a massive fan of Dame Joan since I was 4 years old. I would lie on the carpet in the sitting room and listen to her for hours. My favourite at that time was her Command Performance that she did for Queen Elizabeth.
@oprah999 Your comment is what is ridiculous, as it shows a profound ignorance of what is going on in this video. This was filmed in the 60's, when this style of production was the norm.
Of course the staging of this seems rather ridiculous now, but it is fiendishly difficult to sing, let alone sing well. Dame Joan pulls it off sensationally, as she did consistently throughout her career.
@raigekimaru Actually this VERY poor cabaletta was written for Malibran, a mezzo ! But I assume such a misconception of yours is nothing but a detail when compared to your acute and wide-ranging operatic culture...
I would have wished this excerpt could've been played at Joan's memorial service at the Sydney Opera House - it was her at her very best. Instead, the powers that be relied on her performances in Sydney in the late 70s & 80s which on any criteria were sub-standard, compared with her outstanding singing in the 60s & early 70s.
@oprah999 If you have even taken time to listen to the remarks regarding the whole 'passport incident', which i am sure that you havn't, you will know that she is simply stating facts. it wasn't at all meant to be malicious, like you are implying. I am a product of Australia (though recently moved to NZ), and i can tell you that the Chinesse/Indian poulation is huge, and i infact do feel that if i was interviewed for a passport by an Imigrant, i think i would react the same way too. Let her rest
My mother was one of the chorus singers who sang with Dame. Joan when she did her 1965 tour of Australia with Pavarotti. Mum, who was a huge supporter of the wonderfull Dame. Joan, told me how Lucia's High E Flat just drowned the room with sound. i didn't really appreciate opera until i got older when my mother and i saw her in her signature role, Lucia, at the sydney opera house in the early 80's. I have never forgotten, and since that day i have aquired the taste! RIP La Stupenda
@MaddameButterfly504 My Mother immigrated to the USA and I grew up here. She was a singer and all my chldhood memories are of listening to the great voices of all time. When Joan Sutherland came out, Mom was thrilled that she was from Australia and we listened to her constantly. Thanks so much for sharing!
@oprah999 You have so upset me. It's people like you, ignorant and dickheaded who make me wish that we didn't have to share the likes of Dame. Joan with the world. shame on you!
@oprah999 Joan Sutherland was known for being very warm with her colleagues, fans, other musicians and the people who helped her to get to where she got, and was known in not partaking in the gossip which others were rumoured to have in engaged in. She made a racist comment in the heat of the moment of which I do not approve and which she apologised for and praised the Chinese community in Australia. We all make mistakes and Joan apologised for hers. Give her a little respect.
I heard the comment on a news clip and it didn't really sound like it had racist intent. I think people working in the position she was referring to were just usually chinese, it didn't sound to me like she really had anything against the race as a whole.
I saw Sutherland many times during her prime and even though an ardent Callas worshipper I was always overwhelmed by the enormity and beauty of Dame Jone's voice. It is not possible to appreciate it via recordings because it's physicality could only be experienced in person: the sound was so huge, warm and creamy that one could not locate it's origin on the stage; it seemed to envelope the listener from every part of the house (Met. Opera) and in the "stupendous" moment to transcend criticism.
@ you evil evil, totally evil person, the world will be better without you. Joan Sutherland was liked and loved by almost everyone, read the comments from everyone who knew her. You are a disgrace to the world of opera................but she will be remembered long after you are dead, which hopefully will be soon
wake up opera fans! THIS is what real opera is about. no bizarre modern interpretations, pretty young singers or odd acrobatic performances can make up for the beauty of the human voice which they compromise in the process. better to go to an opera house pitch black and hear beautiful, perfectly produced voices than see the most visually appealing opera in the world with mediocre singing. Dame Joan Sutherland is the epitome of the beauty of the human voice. Rest in Peace La Stupenda.

I don't get it. Why was this considered too difficult to perform? Is it that last note at the end? What makes this more difficult to sing than other operas?
My newb-ness aside, her voice is lovely. It's a pity I've only just heard of her.
@sciamhach At that TIME it was considered too difficult, the same way that some of the pieces of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven were considered too difficult at that time. The information about her death made me cry like she was my family... There will never be a singer like Joan Sutherland, never again. Rest in peace, dear La Stupenda...
@spenzur La Stupenda translates from Italian as The Stupendous One... Sutherland, Callas, Pavoratti and Corelli were the only ones I can think of who were given high honouring titles
@raigekimaru He should be... he's the only tenor I know who sings his entire range (E2- C5) in chest voice... all the others use their head voice (which is NOT falsetto)
@raigekimaru I haven't listened to too much Corelli, but keep in mind that just because he could "hit" an E2 doesn't mean that it was within his 'singable range'. If the timbre of his voice was essentially that of a tenor's, then he probably couldn't have legitimately sung or sustained an E2 - because that's below even a baritone's tessitura.
There is a huge difference between a person's actual RANGE, and the *TESSITURA* in which their voice can comfortably sit/sing. :)
So many people today are hung up on the number of notes within a person's vocal range - which no one seems to have been preoccupied with in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic or early Modern periods. They were much more concerned about the qualities, shades and nuances in a singer's voice - no doubt because they also knew the staggering difference between "range" and "tessitura" (which is LOST on most people today).
this is opera darling. it's not the pop industry where you sell by being hot, you need talent to sell in this business, and Dame Joan Sutherland had more than anyone else =)
I just heard about her last month, how much praise she gets for her vocal ability and I must say I wanna study her legacy, I really like this piece, I would definitely study opera

Could someone explain why she is called ''la stupenda''? It reminds me of stupid, but why would people call her stupid? :P
spenzur 1 year ago
@spenzur La Stupenda translates from Italian as The Stupendous One... Sutherland, Callas, Pavoratti and Corelli were the only ones I can think of who were given high honouring titles
dangmills 1 year ago
@dangmills Thanks for the answer :D

@dangmills Caballe was given the title La Superba....

@dangmills what were corelli's and pavarotti's??
FeelinMinnesota 1 year ago
@FeelinMinnesota Corelli's "Prince of Tenors" & Pavarotti's "King of C's & D's"
dangmills 1 year ago
@dangmills
Prince of Tenors? Corelli should be the Emperor of tenors
raigekimaru 1 year ago
@raigekimaru He should be... he's the only tenor I know who sings his entire range (E2- C5) in chest voice... all the others use their head voice (which is NOT falsetto)
dangmills 1 year ago
@dangmills
Corelli can sing E2?! that's as low as me and I'm a bass-baritone!
raigekimaru 1 year ago
E2 --> C3--> Middle C4 --> C5 (he probably can still sing it, he was a baritone, but he can't belt it out)
dangmills 1 year ago
@raigekimaru I haven't listened to too much Corelli, but keep in mind that just because he could "hit" an E2 doesn't mean that it was within his 'singable range'. If the timbre of his voice was essentially that of a tenor's, then he probably couldn't have legitimately sung or sustained an E2 - because that's below even a baritone's tessitura.
There is a huge difference between a person's actual RANGE, and the *TESSITURA* in which their voice can comfortably sit/sing. :)
Rapture1987 1 year ago
So many people today are hung up on the number of notes within a person's vocal range - which no one seems to have been preoccupied with in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic or early Modern periods. They were much more concerned about the qualities, shades and nuances in a singer's voice - no doubt because they also knew the staggering difference between "range" and "tessitura" (which is LOST on most people today).
Rapture1987 1 year ago
@dangmills gedda was the king of D's. But yes pavarotti's C's are unbeatable.

this is opera darling. it's not the pop industry where you sell by being hot, you need talent to sell in this business, and Dame Joan Sutherland had more than anyone else =)
