  • Word for money, $1000-dollar bill; we need one. The strangest name for money is the "Groat," found it on an online game; and someone who had studied economics created the game as a hobby and sold time on it: I believe groat at its base means some measure of grain, thus money has a reference to what we eat. It was a space trading and adventure game that used groats and had its own stock market, with planet industrial inputs and outputs; and you could make your own planet with enough groats.

  • An interesting thing is that in many "romance" languages (i.e. latin descendents) the word for money and silver are the same - some variant on "argentum". This is because historically silver was the base standard for money and value measurement. Even in England, a pound sterling was once just that!

  • @sukumvit And similarly the word 'money' seems to share with 'moneda,' coin in Spanish.

    50's are Pineapples. (mainly a mustard-y yellow)

    20's are Lobsters. (predominantly red)

    10's are blueberries. (blue)

and 5's, well not exactly anything interesting five-r (pink-ey blue-y purple)

  • @tommo2785 Where in Australia? I was born there and lived there for 35 years (until last year) and have NEVER heard these terms before...

  • @sukumvit I am in Brisbane, in Queensland.

Amongst many people i associate with, at work and outside of work you hear the expression 'just slide him a pinaple' or other such phrases.

I am unsure as to how common it is in otehr regions. However though, it is common amongst people not so concerned about their bank balances and less common amongst people in the lower income brackets.

  • @tommo2785 AHA! A Queenslander thing! The mystery is solved... ;-)

I'm pretty sure these terms never made their way "south of the border". Then again, maybe I just didn't have rich enough associates...

  • My favorite word for money is something I first heard in the Midwest: ducats. Not sure if that's where it's most commonly used in the US, but it appears to not be very popular. I think this has also been shortened to "ducks", but that's even less common.

  • Ducats? That's an extremely old term, which was used in Italy or something. I don't know, but I remember it was the term used for money in 'The Merchant of Venice', but it's not so much a term, more of a currency. x

  • Just a little correction..(please do not be offended) for the pronunciation of the french word ''caisse'' (im french canadian myself) ..its really simple, just pronunce it the same way you say ''case'' :)

  • I'm curious: do Canadians pronounce it differently than the French do? In terms of pronunciation "case" seems to be quite a long way away from "caisse".

  • I guess you're talking about French Canadians..well you have to know that we both speak french, our languages are different, the accents aren't the same and we have differents expressions (like USA and UK people for example) but yes, we ''normally'' pronunce words the same, but theres always some people to ruin the words...if you see what I mean
