Wow! Why is this so surprising? The American military always has the best possible equipment available to them. Usually, such equipment is manufactured by American companies but sometimes the best is made overseas, so they buy it. It's that simple! Oh, by the way - Airbus isn't French.

Boeing planes are built all over the world not just in the U.S.A. Northrop Grumman won the contract based upon superiority of product! Northrop Grumman won on 4 out of 5 criteria as determined by the Air Force. If the Air Force were to reverse this CONTRACT with Northrop Grumman, it will send a horrible message to the world about the way that America does business. We already have a bad standing in the world, according to politicians, breaching contracts will not help our standing in the world.

Boeing actually did put out the superior aircraft but the A.F. changed its specifications halfway through to fit Airbus's aircraft. Sorry if I dont want $40 billion in my taxpayer money going to the goddamn Europeans when it didnt have to. This has politics all over it. It's all about quality. Except the Airbus 380 is years behind schedule. When the parts showed up to be assembled, they didn't fit. It drifts to the side when landing in medium winds. Sometimes the tail hits the runway when it's taking off. Many airports don't want to spend the money to upgrade for such a huge plane.

This was all because of lobbying efforts by McCain. 40,000 high tech jobs. Oursourcing our military. Shameful. Bad McCain.

Second, is this the best technology? How do you know there weren't questionable tactics in the awarding of this contract to EADS?

I do not doubt the south needs these jobs. However, we are talking about a much smaller percentage of jobs available as a result of the EADS award as opposed to a Boeing award. The Boeing award would have created quite a few jobs in both Kansas and Washington state. I cannot believe that many thousands of other jobs would have been created through sub-tier suppliers, including those in the southern US. I do not believe the Air Force made the correct decision.

After considering that the far superior DC-10/KC-10 (made by then-independent company McDonnell Douglas) wasn't even being supported, and after considering the fact that Boeing was using the same airframe over and over again, and wanting FULL FREIGHT for it, it makes sense to give it to someone who's going to give us better bang for the buck. And Northrup IS an American company.

Boeing does not get subsidized by the American Government. They contract with the government for military products. EADS (the parent company of Airbus) gets money from a consortium of European countries to keep their business going, not for selling/buying products. Big difference there. It s a crying shame that most people are so ignorant about this. First and foremost, the contract is awarded to NG, not EADS. Yes, parts, not all, of the plane will be built overseas, but assemebled in the US, not unlike Boeing commecial and milityar aircraft are assembled today. Do you research on Boing and see how much they import on their current aircraft. Non of the US technology will be touched by EADS pesonnel that will all be done in a separate NG facilty in Alabama. Trust me, I know.

Try talking to the people that fly Boeing and Airbus aircraft and the mechanics that work on both. You'll quickly learn that Airbus is not the better product - based on their independent opinion. Don't expect to get a 50 year service life from Airbus. They may be cheaper, which is why the Airlines have purchased them but remember they are a subsidized company. How can you defend going to a foreign company for our nations defense needs?
