  • Wonderful performance. Thank you for sharing. Prokofiev fans - you may also enjoy my all-time favorite recording of Prokofiev no 2 piano concerto with Gutierrez and Jarvi.

  • saw this live in Amsterdam last month, wish i was back there now. it's just stunning live. Same pianist but different orchestra and venue. Concertgebouw and The Luxemburg PO were both wonderful. Lugansky is a master of this concerto. He totally OWNS that cadenza

  • I absolutely LOVE Prokofiev's special brand of atonality. It's haunting and beautiful, absolutely unlike any other composer's atonality.

  • Dear Pianotonton,

please hear Evgeny Kissin, the studio version here in Youtube.

    His pace is perfect.

And Efgeny, in my opinion, is not better pianist than Lugansky.

Is only a question of pace. Lugansky's choice for this specific excecution was bed.

It isn't a relative question. It's the ZEN of the 2nd concerto.

I heard, I don't remember, a pianist and the England or London Phillarmonic (cd)! Impeccable, perfect and divine, zen.

I think that Lugansky can do much more with the Prokofiev II

  • @MyKarllos Dear Pianotonton, now it's your turn! Please, excuse my indigent English. I said that the Lugansky's choice for this specific execution was bad. The

play that I said above is Vladimir Feltsman, with Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra! It's perfect. IMPORTANT: I love Lugansky above all!

  • Too slowly!

  • I haven't heard this piece in quite awhile and had forgotten the jaw dropping beauty of the melody along with the layers!

  • i can say without a doubt that this is my favorite piece of all time. absolutely stunning

  • @iansquared3 It's weird - with some music, you get the feeling that it sailed out of the ether, that it was always there. That's supposed to be the mark of good music, that it sounds like it always existed. What I find with Prokofiev is that this is never the case, and that's what makes it so amazing - it sounds like it never COULD have existed, ever. Like it's prohibited, completely. Alien music from an alternate heaven.

  • @hoiszhdfoifh22 fantastic comment

  • I love the first movement of this piano concerto beyond my ability to express in words.

  • this music so frightening.

    amazing,beautiful,no words!

  • the most difficult piano work!!!

  • Not precisely. You need to listen more music for piano.

  • I suppose you mean piano concerto.

For difficulty... have a look at Rachmaninoff and Brahms for example

  • I actually play rach 2 and 3 and proko 3, but prokofiev 2 is much harder than rach 3 technically, specially the intermezo, it has some pasages almoust imposible to play.

    First Prokofiev 2

    Second Rachmaninov 3

    Third Ligeti´s one

Anyway everithing well played is hard.

  • Hi

well we have too much different opinions !!

A technical hard piece i think would also be Saint Saens pc No.2

    What do you think ?

  • Of course is very hard to play, nor as prokofiev neither rachmaninov , thcaikovsky or brahms, but is for professionals too. I haven´t played it, but is one of my favorites. It really beautiful. U should also hear Shostakovich pc 2 and ravel pc in g, Im sure you will love it. Grieg's one is also great. Are you pianist?

  • Grieg's pc is amazing.

A pianist, no. I just play the piano. Mostly Chopin. It is very difficult to be a pianist here in Greece. Unfortunately it is true. You have to do anything else but arts in order to get a job and live. This is so embarashing. You HAVE to go to school, and then do private lessons (usual thing in Greece, this every single day). Also learn i foreign languge such as english (2-3 times a week). When you study your daily lessons then you can THEN play the piano ...

  • ... if ofcource it is not midnight !

I am also 24 years old. I have graduated from a 4 year school (computer and systems engineer) and now i am having my masters degree which is 2 years (1 year left only).

Too much studies !!! When i have some free time... i have too many things to do. :(

    What about you ?

  • I´m 20 years old, I began studying piano at the age of 5, but at the samen time I had been studying school. Now Im studying Bussines administration and of course music. Im going to do my piano master in Manhattan School Of music. You should try to practice more, there are great world class pianist in greece just remember Sgourus. You can be a great pianist. So what pieces have you studied?

  • Well, i started lesson at the age of 9. I had to stop at my 18s because i didnt have sufficient time to study and goto to my teacher's house. From 2003 till now, i am playing without any guidance.

I have studied what everyone has. Bach, Crammer, Czerny, Clementi and ofcource Beethoven, Chopin.

The God is Beethoven, and the King is Chopin.

I play parts, for example from Beethoven sonatas, and Chopin (mazurkas, waltz, etudes, concerto fragments) I havent included yet Scherzos, Improptus, Balladas

  • Thats good, you have to keep growing as a musician. Of course beethoven is God in music!! Which sonatas have you studied?

  • Hi, i will tell you the numbers

    1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12(favorite), 13(last part), 14, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, 30, 32(last 5-6 pages)

  • I think it's the most beautiful of all the Prokofiev piano concertos...

  • you are right! At least the first part is beyond any competition.

  • Haha, listen to this when study?? wow!!

    lol Gene Simmons

  • this can never be background music for studying; this masterpiece always brings itself to the front and kick everything else aside

  • I heard this piece in live two hours ago.

    It was amasing.

  • he's good; and I didn't realize Gene Simmons was a conductor.

  • this performance made me fall in love with this piece.. now i listen to it while i study :D Lugansky rocks!

  • Does anyone know, if this is available on DVD?

    This is a jewel..

  • what a haunting beginning, brilliant

  • Mind bendingly good music

  • genial! superbe bien !

  • thank you so much for posting this video! I'm learning the Cadenza and I think Lugansky is one of the best!
