I have a 96 XR250R white with red and yellow decals, pretty sick, but doesnt start easy, i usually have to roll down a hill, but it will start and run great! XR's forever!!! I also have a 91 CR250R!
@DogCleanr if the jetting is set right, and the bike is maintained well (ie: new rings ? , new spark plug? etc) ... then it should start first time.
Before looking at internals like rings, check the spark, and the carb is clean .... and especially check that the air filter is breathing ok.
I often made the mistake of over oiling mine ... and it could make it hard to start. Easy way to check is to remove the filter totally and try starting.
I wish they never discontinued these bikes in the US. I hope they come back. The XR is one solid bullet proof bike and extremely reliable. I miss them!!!!
@Mrvolsguy24 they discontiued them in 04 to the world 04 was the last year of xr mass production apart from the xr230r that came out in 07 with full disk brakes and all the xr gear. it was (in my opinion) alot better than the crf230f.
@TL250Rider The 400 version is probably the perfect compromise .... not too much power (when compared to my WR), but a noticable amount more than the 250.
@MXHondas230 No,there actually not,If a kid on a 2 stroke 80cc dirt bike can out run a XR 250,than its not that fast.but since you own one,its fast 2 U.
the decomp lever is for if you manage to get it flooded. then sometimes the kickstarter kicks back and it hurts like a bitch. That's when that lever comes in handy
I have an 1987 XR250R and I dont give choke and it starts right away when its cold but when its hot it take a couple ok kicks to start, can you help me?
I dont know, if it doesnt seem to be harming anything I wouldnt worry about it, Could need a little carb adjustment, cuz I could be running a little rich, which would make it start easy cold but may have problems startsing warm. I have a 1985 Xr350, check out my vids.
ahh well i got my pistons done and it starts first time evertime... when u leave it always turn the fuel off .... so it doesnt flood the carbs... and use full choke the first time u try to kick and then the second no choke and it should be fine
Kick the kickstart gently until it gets resistance. This it where the piston is at the top dead center (TDC). Then kick er hard! The xr250 has a relatively high compression piston that needs to be at the TDC to start easier. That's why the decompression lever is there, but you don't need it. Does this help a little bit?
Well, get it to the TDC. It's the compression being squeezed without the exhaust valve being opened. If you started at the beginning of the cycle the exhaust valve will open like cake. Like I posted earlier, get that piston to the top (resistance), then kick it hard. I've never had my 250 pop back when I start it properly. I know... it hurts.
No you don't. xr250s have auto decompression. I've started mine 100s of times by kicking at TDC, and my gear is just fine. The compression release is if it won't start well and if you stall going downhill, according to the manual.
mine used to have the auto release. But I didnt like it cuz you dont know if your gonna have a valve open. Also not all 250 have the auto release. My dirt bike needs a compression release, cuz it has too much compression to kick through.
What do you mean an open valve? If it didn't shut, Honda wouldn't have made it auto. Have you tried what asiankid said? This is the perfect way to start something manually. I've always done this and it starts right up. Just don't kick it over with flipflops!
well it works on a cam system on the kick start shaft, and you have to set it up so that its not engaged all the time, and I didnt like to have a risk like that. And the compression release is to kick it over, not when you stall going down a hill.
Sorry Man, you're wrong. When you stall, and hold the decomp. lever down, and pop the clutch, the compression won't lock the rear wheel, and it will allow engine to turn over. It's in the manual, and there's nothing in the manual about setting up/adjusting your decomp. I think you're making this more difficult than you ought, if indeed we are talking about the xr250.
I have a 1985 XR350, it has the automatic decompression. As you said the 250 has the auto decomp. If you stall going down a hill you pull the clutch in. BTW the auto release does need to be set up right, Im not making it more difficult, its not difficult at all. I just dont like the idea of the auto release. And the kickstart wont kick back at you if you bring it back up after the bike fires.
the back wheel wont lock up if you pull the clutch in. The manuel decompression isnt to pull in when you stall going down a hill. Its for starting the bike. IDK if the 250 has way less compression but I could imagine its about the same.
This is what the 2002 XR250 manual says, so I'll believe Honda over someone else. When you are moving and stall, it says to pull in the clutch, pull in the decomp., pop (let out) the clutch, and I'm assuming that the decomp. allows the engine to take in the A/F and spark without locking the rear wheel due to comp. This will in turn start the engine. I apologize, I didn't clarify that this is to start the engine while moving.
oh, well thats not what its for, thats just a techniuqe to start the engine when it stalls. The decompression lever is to get it past TDC. I thought you said that the xr250 has the automatic decompression lever.
i have a 05 XR250R and it has the de-comp leaver on it just under the clutch. i always start it like in the vid from TDC thats how u start a kick start and yer the 250s dont have much compresion but the leavers there anyway. just incase
Yea, I was trying to tell that guy what the decomp lever was for. But he insisted that its for stalling when dgoing down a hill. Which you could just pull the clutch in. Yea that way works, but "just be careful of the kick start gear" is all i was saying. XR's are nice bikes. I got the 350. Fun stuff.
@sjhanksaz Your a fucking idiot.

I would not start it with the kick stand down. It's a good way to break it off.

@seanyamaha250 This video was made for an ebay sale.. to show the buyer how easy it was to start.
Even though I now have a KTM, i really miss the simplicity and reliability of the XR.

@NAMTRIP they are not fast - but they are great at what they are meant to do. ie: plug through mud and stuff.
The low down torque is great and they churn out of corners and up muddy hills.
Plus they are bullet proof engines.
Great bikes
