I don't have a favorite scene in this movie, its all so badass, from the nuke at the beginning, to Tetsuo hallucinating and thinking his guts are spilling out of his stomach. Not the baddest anime ever, the BEST anime ever.

If you read the manga, she died in a differant way, but ultimately in a way I feel was even more undeserving. She's the innocent who is killed by Tetsuo's greed and lust for power. There are many innocents killed, true, but Kaori we KNOW to truly be doing what is best for those around her. And she dies. It is a senselss waste, and something that I felt was one of the most awful/haunting pieces of the story.

The LEAST they could do is let her live and spend a good while mourning for Tetsuo, because I'm pretty sure that she loved him and vice-versa. That kind of shit should never happen, whether by accident or on purpose. But it does. And I hate it.

Too true. She really cared for him, at least. Love is a bit of an abstract concept for a 15 year old, but I think you're right that she loved him as much as she could, given their inexperience. If you liked Akira, I really reccommend reading the manga, which the movie was based off of. It's long, and differant to the movie, but well worth it.
